There is difference beteen murder and killing. Soldiers are not murderers and neither is Jack Kevorkian

 This is not easy to comprehend, but most people want to start this by quoting the traditional wording of the 10 Commandments, "You shall not kill" etc.  

There are two or three problems with simply taking that Commandment at face value.

Language:   The Old Testament is written basically in Hebrew, and the original Hebrew word used is literally "do no murder", or, "shall not murder".  This more acurate wording is again used in most modern English translations. 

Biblically, murder is defined as killing for personal reasons or personal gain, and this is solidly condemned. Context is the third factor. Genesis 20:13 is the relevant Commandment. In the very next chapter, Genesis 21:12-17 legitimate killing is authorised and defined. Therefore, "kill" in the sense of the Commandments cannot be an absolute word. Therefore, legally, ethically and morally in virtually every society that has ever existed has drawn the distinction between "murder" and "killing". Murder can never be condoned. Killing can be seen by society as accidental or justifiable etc without breaking laws, or moral precepts. This is not simply a convenient way of slipping around the issue but a fact of language, law and history.

I agree that Kevorkian can be commended as not having murdered, and that there is a distinction between killing and murder, and in some cases soldiers do not murder (I'm sure we can think of some classical cases in history where soldiers have murdered); but I do not come through these conclusions via Biblical matter. I've always agreed with Kevorkian about an individual's right to die. I am ashamed that we put him in prision for providing a life affirming service we do not deny our pets.Electricmic - (talk) 14:31, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Life affirming?

Affirming of a quality life free of protracted agony. When a sane adult decides to end their own suffering the state should not interfere. The reality of our limited medical resources also demand an examination of the cost and goals of our efforts. In many European countries it is perfectly acceptable to request assistance from the medical profession if you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and wish to end your life before it deteriorates into a living hell. For one, I think that is a lot more dignified than turning into a vegetable and burdening your family with massive medical bills. Of course, here in Belgium we don't have massive medical bills and capricious insurance companies. The doctor's judgement always trumps the insurance company's interest in not paying. It's the law, and if you can't instigate similar changes in the U.S. Then for all the claims to care about people's health, it is a lie or form of schizophrenia. A hospital should never exist to make a profit; medicine is a public service and anyone going in to the profession to get rich should be taken outside and shot. Sure, it should be a well-paid profession, the amount of study required is onerous, but it shouldn't be a route to having a mansion and holiday home in Hawaii. --Brian McNeil / ^talk 14:27, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Kevorkian seeks to move the line even further than what is currently acceptable in Europe, too. Advance health care directives are available here in the US, too, so that one is not unnecessarily kept alive as a "vegetable". --SVTCobra 22:36, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Jack Kevorkian is my hero. I have stood by my husbands bedside and watched him die, after existing for 6 years. I have stood by the bedside of a dear friend, dying from cancer. I have never witnessed such horrific suffering in my life. We are more humane to suffering animals, and criminals that are put to death, than we are to innocent people that cannot get well. I hope he wins his seat in Congress and I also hope that our country learns compassion and stops the terrible suffering of so many of our loved ones.

Finally someone talking about the corruption and crooked things that are going on in congress.
