Michael Nutter won the Democratic mayoral primary in Philadelphia

Michael Nutter won the Philadelphia Democratic mayoral primary making him the presumptive mayor. He will face Republican candidate Al Taubenberger in the general election in the fall.

Background

Nutter positioned himself as a reformer. Prior to the election he was endorsed by all the major newspapers in the city. On April 27, 2007, The Philadelphia Inquirer announced that it would endorse Nutter for the Democratic primary. Nutter was also endorsed by the Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia magazine, The Northeast Times, Philadelphia City Paper, Philadelphia Weekly, Philly for Change (a local affiliate of Democracy for America), The Daily Pennsylvanian, and Clean Water Action.

Nutter won the May 15 Democratic primary election with 37% of the vote in a five-man field. He defeated his nearest rival, Tom Knox, by a comfortable margin. The other candidates, Bob Brady, Chaka Fattah and Dwight Evans, trailed the top two. Nutter drew strength from wards throughout the city. His strongest wards were the liberal wards of Center City and the Northwest, where Nutter soundly defeated all of his opponents.
