Portal talk:Palestine

I don't think it is a good idea to turn "Category:Palestine" into redirect to this page. Though there are 32 articles in that category, there is no means to find them. If no one oppose in few days, I'll resolve this redirection and put the portal palestine as a page under category:Palestine. --Aphaia 15:52, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

We're a news service, our articles don't run A-Z but are relevant by time - category views are useless to us. We're not Wikipedia. Dan100 (Talk) 07:24, August 26, 2005 (UTC)

a search for 'Palestine' stories

I just typed "Palestine" in the search box to the left and received this result. Is there a problem with that? I don't see one, because I found what I was searching for.

I suppose when the redirect from Portal to Category goes unperformed, then it becomes a problem... kind of like renaming the same story's headline and not making redirects for the older headlines to the new headline. But I don't believe that the same sort of nightmare animal would evolve for this Portal/Category issue, as the issue with the headline redirects. -Edbrown05 00:40, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

So you got this big shitload of pages.... category, story .... who knows under the current architecture? They are all mixed together. What makes a story any different from the 'location' where the story occurred or the 'topic' of what the story is about? Nothing. Who cares? -Edbrown05 04:27, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

Full category listings

Aphaia, you can organise category pages if you wish with a DPL that displays all the stories rather than just the recents news or a listing in alphabetical order, if that's what you want to do? Then you can also include a link to the portal page where everything's laid out nicely, rather than having a transclude. I don't know if that quite fits in with the Category Portal scheme but it seems like a good solution to me, if your point is that you want to read all stories on Palestine on one page ClareWhite 12:28, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

Euch, the redirect bit is beyond me. This is how we could have the three pages:

Palestine has transcluded inside/redirected Portal:Palestine with an additional link Read all stories on Palestine which links to: Category:Palestine, which has the following DPL:

<DynamicPageList> category=published category=Palestine </DynamicPageList>

and an additional link to Portal:Palestine. Then the category page will display all stories, most recent first, and the main page and portal pages display it in a meaningful way, with a workspace/bureau/tools if developed. ClareWhite 12:39, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

There are two concerns on me, the first is already described well as above; supposedly it would be benefical the current portal has "read all articles" link to category which has such a list; the other is lack of interlang link consistency between English Wikinews and other editions, and therefore the former is in inconsistency to other editons in design. Please Don't redirect catagory's.

I know the conversation has kinda moved on, but... Please Don't redirect cats. the search function is bad for finding groups of articles about one thing. (its more or less bad for finding articles on most anything anyways, it seems) I use the a-z listing lots. Sometimes I just forget a spelling of something and I know a category that it is a subcategory of and look for it in the category. Sometimes there's a category that has some articles in it, that also belong in another category. quite often all these articles start with the same letter. For example I was making sure that all NASA related articles were in category:NASA. It helped alot I could just go through category:Space and look at all the listings that started with N. How many users are goining to know the difference if after a {{:whatever}} ther is a category listing. As for listing by date with DPL, that works for some things, but alphabetical listing is needed for others. I've got an idea for DPL's that I'll propose on template talk:Topic header soon. Palestine?

The category name "Palestine" seems to imply that there is a country, or region, called "Palestine", which is not accurate (the Palestine region includes Israel as well, but Israel news are not covered in the category).

I suggest renaming it Palestinian Territories, which is more accurate.

Please comment - I'll wait a few days before changing the name.

Want a comment Gabi? Fine. Ok, Palestine is a fine discription, it's historically accurate and you need to just leave it alone. Palestine describes a place as well as a group of people. Don't get all uppity about something so irrelivant.
