Nine Peruvian miners were extracted from a collapsed copper mine Wednesday morning after spending six days underground. They were trapped under the Cabeza de Negro mine in Ica, Peru since the cave-in last Thursday.

The rescue operation over the weekend was delayed by another cave-in. Workers used shovels, pickaxes, and wheelbarrows to remove more than 26 feet of earth. The only source of communication and provisions including food, water, and oxygen was a tube set in place before the shaft collapsed. Inside the mine, the men told jokes to maintain their spirits. "It's pretty ugly inside," said Edwin Bellido, one of the freed miners. "We slept on the ground on muddy plastic."

President Ollanta Humala welcomed the miners as they ascended from the mine. The event rekindled Humala’s efforts to convert Peru's illegal mines into government-recognized entities that could be regulated for safety. "This should lead us to reflect that we have to avoid these kind of risks because the results will not always be like today," said Humala.

The nine men trapped in the southern mine will be alright after they get over dehydration and dizziness, the president said. Mining accidents killed more than 50 individuals last year in Peru's illegal mines.

Brazil has located an isolated group of indigenous, uncontacted people in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, the Brazilian National Foundation of Indians (FUNAI) announced today.

FUNAI, a state agency, uses aerial expeditions to avoid impacting uncontacted people and invading their land. The agency's policy is to avoid maintaining any human contact with untouched tribes.

Clearings in the Javari river valley reservation were first identified by satellite; the group's existence was only verified later by air flights over the area. The flights established the existence of three clearings with four straw-roofed buildings, known as malocas, which may shelter over 200 Indians. Also visible were areas where crops such as bananas, maize and perhaps peanuts were apparently being grown.

FUNAI's Javari valley coodinator told the Brazilian news agency Estado that both the croplands and the malocas "are new" and are estimated to have been used "for at most one year".

Amorim said, "[T]he Amazon region contains the majority of untouched tribes without any contact with the exterior in the World." And he said the recent findings highlight that the Javari valley holds, "the greatest concentration of isolated groups in Amazonia".

The newly identified group is located close to Brazil's border with Peru in the huge Vale do Javari reservation. Fourteen known uncontacted tribes have been spotted there and up to eight more are suggested by aerial evidence. Altogether, there are about 2,000 individuals in the reservation, according to Amorim.

He said that their culture and their very survival is threatened by illegal removal of the area's natural resources, as well as many other intrusions of civilization, but most of Brazil's indigenous groups have not changed their languages or traditions. FUNAI estimates that the recently discovered tribe likely belongs to the pano language group.

Brazil's indigenous peoples have tenaciously fought for their legal right to reclaim their traditional lands which were allotted to them in Brazil's 1988 constitution stating that all indigenous ancestral lands were to have their boundaries clearly marked and returned to tribes within five years.

The fourteenth Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta de Lobos Big Wave Invitational surf championship took place on Saturday in the Chilean city of Pichilemu, often called the "Capital of the Surf." In this year's competition, 24 surfers from countries such as South Africa, Peru, Chile, the United States, and Argentina participated in the championship, including Pichileminians Ramón Navarro and Cristian Merelló, and Hawaiian Köhl Christensen. The surfers competed for a US$20,000 prize.

The Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta de Lobos has been a tradition since 1998. Christensen won that championship, and has regularly participated in it since then, according to La Tercera. "If [the Chilean waves] weren't that good, I wouldn't come back. They're powerful, that's what makes of Chile a great place to train," Christensen told La Tercera.

The competition was scheduled to take place sometime between April 1 and May 31; it was confirmed to take place on May 28 by Gary Linden, the Big Wave World Tour Contest Director. "We are excited to kick off the 2011 Big Wave World Tour with the third annual Quiksilver Ceremonial. [...] It looks like patience is going to pay off as we are expecting surf in the 30 to 40 foot range with light winds and good lighting making for the perfect start to season," Linden said.

"The Quiksilver Ceremonial is one of the world's most anticipated big wave events, featuring some of the best waves and skilled surfers from around the globe," Hawaiian media Aloha Update reported. Carlos Ferrer, marketing manager of Quiksilver Chile, said: "This championship has managed to put itself as one of the great dates of the worldwide surfing scene. It is of international class."

On Thursday, Mayor of Pichilemu Roberto Córdova reunited with organizers of the ceremonial, Carlos Ferrer, Gary Linden, and Ricardo Parot from Wetfly Productions, at the Pichilemu city hall. "The mayor reiterates his commitment to the community with these kinds of events in the low-season as they are great attractions that help support Pichilemu's tourism industry," city hall representatives said on its Facebook profile.

Many people visited Punta de Lobos on Friday, as the surfers were practicing. "There was great expectation in Punta de Lobos yesterday [on Friday]," La Tercera reported. "It has arrived the same amount of people coming a long holiday weekend to Pichilemu, but this time, only to see the championship," director of surf magazine Glass.cl Rodrigo Farías told the newspaper. Farías also told La Tercera that during last year's ceremonial there were waves eight-meters high, and "[Saturday]'s waves are expected to be more ordained." He predicted that it would be "a bit cloudy, and there will be more time between one wave and another, so there could be more tubes, which will be much better visually."

The surfers dropped into the sea to begin the championship at 07:30 local time (11:30 UTC). It is estimated that least two thousand people from Chile and other countries attended the event throughout the day. A helicopter flew overhead at Punta de Lobos, recording and photographing the surfers and attendants. The attendants were given free fruit juice, fruits, as well as Red Bull drinks at the end of the day.

The 24 competing surfers were: Köhl Christensen, Carlos Burle, Marcos Monteiro, Peter Mel, Chris Bertish, Ramón Navarro, Diego Medina, Cristian Merello, Rusty Long, Grant "Twiggy" Baker, Fernando Zegers, Reinaldo Ibarra, Greg Long, Gabriel Villarán, Jamie Sterling, Anthony Taschnick, Mark Healey, Kealii Mamala, Jaimie Mitchell, Danilo Couto, Sebastian de Romana, León Vicuña, and Matías López.

The Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta de Lobos was broadcasted live in HD quality for the first time in the championship's history through its official website. The footage included underwater shots.

The championship lasted until 17:30 local time (21:30 UTC), and the results were as follows:

"Viva Brazil! Firstly I want to thank God, because everyone's okay and nobody got injured. I also want to thank the residents of Pichilemu for giving us good vibes and to the jet-skis pilots, who worked hard all day. I knew this day was going to come," Marcos Monteiro, the winning surfer said shortly after the championship ended during a press conference.

The Big World Tour's next stop is Pico Alto, Peru, on July 1.

The Nazca monkey

A small Cessna passenger plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Peru near the Nazca Lines yesterday leaving all six occupants dead according to local authorities. The victims of the crash were three men and one woman from Britain and the Peruvian pilot and co-pilot. The plane is believed to belong to Nazca Airlines.

According to the Associated Press the Nazca police chief claims the cause of the accident seems to be engine failure. According to the Telegraph police said the plane was trying to make an emergency landing in a field when it crashed. As of the last report the police were still trying to recover the bodies of the dead. The Associated Press has also reported that the British refused to comment without permission from London.

The Nazca Lines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of ancient animal depictions, are a popular destination to fly over, but there have been worries about insufficient supervision of the aging planes which make the trip. There have been previous crashes in the area with one taking place in February when a Cessna 206 crashed killing all seven occupants; that flight was also operated by Nazca Airlines. A crash in April 2008 killed five French tourists, but the pilot survived.

22-year-old Dutch native Joran van der Sloot was charged yesterday with the murder of Peruvian Stephany Flores. Stephany Tatiana Flores Ramírez, the 21-year-old daughter of a former Peruvian presidential candidate, was found beaten to death in Van der Sloot's hotel room on May 30, 2010. The two appeared to have met only hours before while playing poker at a nearby casino. Flores was found four days later by an employee of the Hotel Tac in the Miraflores District of Lima. Van der Sloot had previously requested that no hotel staff enter his room.

As Flores was being buried by her family, Van der Sloot was arrested in Chile after trying to escape from Peru. Van der Sloot, who lives in Aruba, was extradited to Peru on June 4. At first, he told police there that, while he had met Flores, he had not killed her, but late last week, he confessed to murdering her. Van der Sloot claimed that he only killed Flores after he found her looking through personal files on his computer.

Joran van der Sloot is the only suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway during her school trip on Aruba. Holloway was last seen on May 30, 2005, exactly five years before Flores' death. Van der Sloot, however, was never charged in connection with the disappearance.

Van der Sloot will be held in solitary confinement for the next few months "for his own safety."

Lucho Barrios singing.

Peruvian bolero singer Lucho Barrios has died at 75 in a Lima, Peru hospital, of renal failure and respiratory problems. Barrios was well-known through all the South American countries.

Barrios was taken to the Dos de Mayo Hospital on Monday due to a pulmonary thromboembolism. He remained in the intensive care unit in a serious condition, until his death on Wednesday at 7:32 AM local time.

"His death is a pain to Peru and the lovers of the bolero," said Peruvian President Alan García. José Fuentes, President of the Dos de Mayo Hospital, reported that he died due to multiple organ failure, because of the severe diseases he had. "He underwent dialysis at 2 AM in a last attempt to make him recover," said Fuentes, "but unfortunately his body no longer responded."

Barrios was diabetic, and had suffered his first thromboembolism almost a year ago, which he recovered from. "He was okay, he was healthy, and he started singing again because he told me, 'I'm gonna die on the stage'," said his daughter, Milagros Barrios.

Location of the Huanoco region within Peru

According to local authorities, at least twenty people in Peru were killed by mudslides in a village in the northeastern part of the country on Friday.

The incident occurred in the Ambo village, in the region of Huanuco. "As of 12:00 pm [17.00 GMT] [...] the death toll stands at twenty people," commented Hipolito Cruchaga, the Civil Defense chief of the region, to media.

Cruchaga reported that fifty people were hurt by the mudslide, and put the number of missing persons at 25. However, other reports said as many as several hundred people were missing.

According to local media, some dead bodies had been found and taken from the Huallaga River; other corpses were dug out of the mud.

Jorge Espinoza, a senior official for Huanuco, remarked: "An entire village, some 400 people, has completely vanished. Some will be saved, but it appears the majority were buried."

Authorities say the mudslide started when torrential rains caused a small lake on a mountain to overflow, spilling water into a ravine.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck the Andean mountains of Peru on Monday, although Civil Defense officials said no damage was reported.

The tremor occurred at 17:52 local time, or 22.52 UTC, with the epicenter located in the Huanuco region of Puerto Inca. The United States Geological Survey said the epicenter struck at a depth of 53.4 miles (95.3 kilometers) and was centered about 240 kilometres (150 miles) northeast of the city of Huanuco and (300 miles) northeast of the nation's capital of Lima.

The El Comercio newspaper commented that the residents of Huanaco rushed out into the streets when the earthquake began, but there wasn't any damage.

A dozen earthquakes in Peru with magnitudes of four or more have occurred since the beginning of this year, and about a hundred such quakes are recorded yearly, according to the Earth Times. Last year there were 140 quakes with a magnitude of 4.0 or above.

In August 2007, a 7.9 earthquake struck the Ica province, just south of the capital. About 600 people were killed as a result, and much damage was caused to nearby infrastructure and buildings.

Peruvian highway police said that two thousand tourists have been stranded near the ruins of the ancient Machu Picchu citadel, after torrential rains caused mudslides, blocking the train route that goes from the site to Cusco.

Soledad Caparo, a spokeswoman for Perurail commented that the train operator suspended service earlier today, and is trying to remove the mud that is blocking the rail.

The last leg of the trip from Machu Picchu to Cusco is only possible by rail; Peruvian Tourism Minister Martin Perez remarked that the government might try to evacuate those stranded via helicopter.

The Vilcanota and Rio Blanco rivers located nearby, meanwhile both have overflowed, flooding hundreds of hectares of corn crop and fifty homes, according to officials. The Cusco-Abancay highway was also blocked due to the overflowing Yanama, with vehicle traffic lining up, unable to get through. Two people were killed by the rains.

Javier Velásquez, head of Peru’s legislature has been named as Prime Minister by President Alan Garcia. Velásquez is from the President's party, APRA, and replaces Yehude Simon as Prime Minister after Simon resigned on July 10. Simon resigned due to a crisis over indigenous land rights which caused 34 deaths, the worst violence Peru has seen in 20 years.

Along with Velásquez’s new role President Garcia has also reshuffled the cabinet and named seven new ministers. Former police chief Octavio Salazar has been named as interior minister.

Opposition Congressman Fredy Otarola has criticized Velásquez, claiming “Velásquez is more of the same” and that he does not "represent change."

Garcia, whose presidency runs out in 2011, has faced several tough years. According to the Agence France-Presse, Peru has gone from a economic strength to a weakness and Garcia also has record disapproval figures, with 67 percent of those polled having a negative opinion of him.

A wooden suspension bridge in Peru, measuring 130 feet (39.6 m), broke into two pieces killing nine people and seriously injuring 70 others, mostly children. Two of the dead were teachers, and seven were students aged 10 to 13.

At least 70 to 80 people were on the bridge at the time of the collapse which happened near Coracora, the capital city of Parinacochas Province.

As four local schools were dismissed, the teachers and students walked home, crossing the bridge. Investigators say the bridges' collapse was due to too many people crossing at a single time.

The bridge traversed a dry riverbed canyon 320 feet (97.5 m) deep which had housed the Santa Barbara River. The suspension bridge is reported to be made of wooden board slats which were supported by steel cables anchored to cement posts.

"We've suffered a grave accident, a suspension bridge that goes to a high school has fallen, it has broken in two and we have a large number of students injured and dead." said Walter Antayhua, Mayor of Coracora. The bridge was slated for repairs last week.

Helicopters were dispatched to take the injured to the hospital, however rescue efforts were hampered by fog which prevented some of them from landing. 70 of the injured victims in a local hospital are suffering from serious injuries. Ayacucho health director Maria Torrealba reported that 33 of those were head injuries.

Rescuers continue their efforts to save 30 more school children, said Ayacucho Governor Ernesto Molina.

Location of the Ayacucho region within Peru

According to the defence minister of Peru, Flores Araoz, Shining Path rebels have killed thirteen soldiers in two ambushes in the southeast region of the country. The attacks were the deadliest by guerrillas in the past ten years.

The minister stated that rebels attacked a military patrol with explosives, killing eleven soldiers and a captain. Both attacks occurred 340 miles (547 km) from Peru's capital of Lima, in the Ayacucho region. Two other soldiers have been injured, and one is missing.

"The attack with dynamite and grenades took place Thursday, and victims included a captain, a junior officer and 11 soldiers," Araoz said, adding that "most of the soldiers plunged over a cliff." The minister said the attacks had happened on Thursday, but news was delayed for some time due to poor communications in the region.

Yehude Simon, the prime minister of Peru, denounced the rebels' attacks. "These actions are desperate responses by the Shining Path in the face of advances by the armed forces. I have no doubt that in the next years this zone will be free of leftover terrorists," he said.

The Shining Path tried to oust the Peruvian government and replace it with communist rule in the 1980s and 90s. They have been accused by authorities of being involved in the cocaine trade, and using money obtained from the profits to fund themselves.

The group returned again in 2008, starting a series of attacks and killing 25 police officers and soldiers in ambushes. The Peruvian army launched an "Operation Excellence" last year to remove three hundred of the guerrillas from the valleys around the Ene and Apurimac rivers, but have not had much success.

The oldest known gold artifact in the Americas is a necklace from Peru, according to University of Arizona anthropology professor Mark Aldenderfer. The necklace comes from a village in the Jiskairumoko range near Lake Titicaca and consists of gold that had been hammered and rolled into nine cylindrical beads, then strung with turquoise on a wool string.

Radiocarbon dating places the manufacture of the necklace from 2155 to 1936 B.C., which makes this item about 600 years older than the next oldest gold artifact that has been discovered the Americas and the oldest example of metalworking of any kind in the Americas.

Gold metallurgy is almost always associated with agricultural societies. Since the materials used in the necklace are not found in the Titicaca basin, the existence of the necklace implies the region had trade routes and a hereditary elite.

Although this discovery was made in 2004, Professor Alenderfer and his team delayed publication in order to have the gold chemically analyzed and to minimize the risk of looters damaging the site before excavation was complete.
