Recently, the non-profit activist organization, Invisible Children, Inc. released a video online which served to kick start the Kony 2012 campaign. The campaign was meant to raise awareness about the Lord's Resistance Army and its leader Joseph Kony. Both support and condemnation followed the release of the video.

The video attracted over 100 million views and lead to significant discussion via an array of social networking sites. The campaign assertively called for people to "pledge" to stand up and take action against Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army. However, of the 104 million views of the film, only 3.4 percent of those people pledged to do something about the issue.

"I know that there is some criticism, in particular about the campaign and Invisible Children as an organization," said Josh Schuler, the director of programming at Christian Fellowship Church in Evansville, Indiana. "I really think that some of that stuff is unfounded and people don’t understand what it’s like for the Ugandans."

Schuler is an advocate for Invisible Children's push to capture Joseph Kony. He has visited Uganda twice, once in 1997 and again in 2010. There, Schuler and a missions team from the church, spent the majority of their time speaking to school children in orphanages, and similar institutions and also addressed groups in various men's and women's prisons, in and around Kampala, Uganda.

Some of the criticism of Invisible Children comes from people questioning what they do with their donations. Invisible Children’s website provides financial statements from 2006 to 2011. Statements reveal that, in 2011 the organization's net income was US$4,870,547. However, the report does not state how the organization spends those monies. Invisible Children did not provide a statement to Wikinews about the net income.

“If you look at Invisible Children’s budget, a lot of it is awareness; raising money so they can build awareness, not necessarily so they can execute justice, because they are not a justice organization," Schuler said.

Invisible Children's 2011 annual report compares their Central Africa Programs from 2011 with years 2010 and 2009. It shows that Invisible Children spent only 37 percent on these programs in 2011, compared with 46.5 percent in 2010, when Invisible Children made a revenue of 67 percent more in 2011 than in 2010.

“Honestly, even if Invisible Children was completely illegitimate, Kony is still a madman and he still needs to be brought to justice," Schuler said. Schuler emphasized that the value of awareness is huge, however he believes the next step to take is "calling congressmen, senators and lobbying for them to take action."

"There are bills out there trying to allocate dollars that are already in the U.S. budget to continue to fund the work of these groups in countries to bring people to justice," Schuler said.

The United States is taking few steps to apprehend Kony. “If Uganda was resource rich to the degree that Iraq was, in the United States we would be talking about Joseph Kony to the same degree that we talk about Saddam Hussein, it’s just that Uganda is not full of oil," Schuler said. "There is no economic benefit for the U.S. to go prosecute [Kony], it’s purely justice."

United States President Barack Obama first assigned 100 troops in October 2011 in Uganda to search for Kony. On April 25, 2012 Obama announced that he had extended their time in Africa, aiming for Kony's capture. "There is legislation out there; an organization, International Justice Mission, which is a prosecuting organization working around the world for issues with social justice, prosecuting cases with sex slavery and child labor around the world," Schuler said.

There have also been questions raised asking whether Kony is even still alive and doubts about his current location. "Kony and the LRA have been pushed out of Uganda, but they still do raids into northern Uganda," Schuler said. "Taking Kony out, doesn’t fix all of the problems. It would definitely start to help with some of it. And I think the corruption stuff could actually be solved democratically."

The film, released on March 5 shows clips of two different trips that co-founder and director of Invisible Children, Jason Russell, took to Uganda. They want to the campaign to raise awareness in hope that if enough people call for Kony's capture, US leaders would have to respond. Using this strategy, Invisible Children's goal is to detain Kony by December 2012.

Invisible Children was started in 2004 after Jason Russell, Bobby Bailey and Laren Poole traveled to Uganda to film a documentary, Invisible Children: The Rough Cut, about the ongoing civil war in Uganda. Since its establishment, Invisible Children has started multiple campaigns to raise awareness.

After the initial release of the first Kony 2012 video, both support and condemnation followed. The negative reviews from the public lead Invisible Children to release a second video titled Kony 2012 Part II- Beyond Famous, on April 2, 2012. The video was published to address the criticism and issues of the first video and shed light on what the organization has accomplished in Uganda.

Ugandan Parliament may take action on the Anti-Homosexuality Act this week. It has reappeared for parliamentary debate for the first time since its proposal in 2009. The original bill called for making homosexuality punishable by imprisonment, or death in aggravated circumstances.

Not reporting gay individuals to the government would also become a criminal act. Despite a great deal of international condemnation, the bill is largely supported in Uganda.

One of the bills backers, Martin Ssempa told the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee that the death penalty is "something that we have moved away from," in recent hearings, according to the Associated Press. However, he stresses the importance of passing the bill, stating that "homosexuality is killing our society."

Two bomb explosions in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, killed at least 64 people earlier today, according to police reports.

Authorities say the explosions took place at an Ethiopian restaurant, where customers were watching the World Cup final, and a rugby club.

Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura commented that "[t]hese bombs were definitely targeting World Cup crowds. [...] This was a terrorist attack. It was a deliberate, calculated attack to inflict maximum damage."

Felix Kulaije, an army spokesperson, suggested that the Somali rebel group al-Shabaab might be behind the attacks, saying that "[w]e suspect it's al-Shabaab because they've been promising this for [a] long [time]."

An unnamed commander for al-Shabaab spoke to the Associated Press earlier today regarding the incident. Although he didn't indicate whether his group was responsible for the attacks or not, he said he was happy the bombings took place, saying: "Uganda is one of our enemies. Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy."

If the group did indeed organize the bombings, then it would be the first time they had conducted attacks outside Somalia. Somali rebels have previously threatened to attack the Ugandan capital.

At least two people in Uganda were killed on Wednesday, after clashes between police and protestors at a royal mausoleum.

The incident occurred at Kasubi, near the Ugandan capital of Kampala, when protestors attempted to stop the country's president, Yoweri Museveni from visiting the tomb site, which was on fire. They set up a barricade and booed him, blocking his motorcade. The fire had destroyed a large portion of the tombs, which are as much as 128 years old. They are revered by the Buganda tribe, the largest in Uganda.

There are accusations that the blaze was started intentionally. Kampala-based journalist Malcolm Webb commented about the incident to Al Jazeera. "[T]he tombs of their kings [...] was burnt to the ground. They suspect it was arson. I've seen four people who were injured [...] But the crowd has been largely chased away."

The president pledged that he would look into the accusations of arson, although he commented that the demonstrators at the "scene of the crime" might have interfered, making an investigation more difficult. "I am suspicious. This could be arson. The problem is the place has been tampered with. [...] [B]ut we are going to investigate and get to the cause," Musveni told the mausoleum caretakers.

Judith Nabakooba, a spokesman for Ugandan security forces, told Agence France-Presse that "[t]here was a group that confronted security at the scene before the arrival of the president. They were violent, when they confronted us we shot in the air to disperse them."

A Buganda official, Medard Ssegona Lubega, remarked about the blaze to the BBC Network Africa, saying: "There are many men of our fallen kings lie in this house, which is now down to ashes," he told the BBC's Network Africa It is something that we have built and kept and maintained for our children and grandchildren and many generations unborn."

Buganda is one of the country's four ancient kingdoms; the United Nations' cultural organisation, UNESCO, designated it as a world heritage site. It has been a popular tourist site, and its mausoleum contains the remains of four of Buganda's former kings, the last of which was buried in 1971.

The president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, has distanced himself from a controversial bill in the Parliament that would make certain acts of homosexuality punishable by death. Until President Museveni publicly spoke out, this proposal was widely supported by the ruling majority party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), and, as a result, was expected to easily pass with a significant number of votes in its favor.

In a nation where homosexuality is already a criminal offense punishable by up to fourteen years in jail, this bill would raise that penalty to life in prison. It would also dole out the death penalty for any offense categorized as "aggravated homosexuality"—meaning a case in which one of the participants is either a minor, HIV-positive, or a "serial offender."

Museveni stressed in this statement on Wednesday, that the Member of Parliament who drafted the legislation in question, although he is a member of the NRM, was not following government policy and did so solely as an individual.

Museveni, who admitted being at the center of widespread international criticism, said in the same statement that this matter was now a "foreign policy issue," and therefore his government, Parliament included, "must take into account [Uganda's] foreign policy interests."

Case in point, Sweden has since threatened to cut financial support to the small African nation if this bill does in fact go through. In addition, numerous other world powers over the past weeks have contacted Museveni directly to elaborate upon their objections.

Following which, a frustrated Museveni told the BBC, "The Prime Minister of Canada came to see me and what was he talking about? Gays. Prime Minister Gordon Brown came to see me and what was he talking about? Gays. Mrs. Clinton rang me. What was she talking about? Gays."

In light of all that has occurred, Museveni told his party that the issue as of today was no longer a parliamentary one, and that it is to be discussed and handled accordingly by him and his cabinet alone.

The United States has said that "regional extremists" may be targeting Air Uganda airplane flights between Southern Sudan and Uganda.

A warning posted yesterday on the Web site of the US Embassy in Khartoum says there is a "potential threat" on the flights between Juba, Sudan and Kampala, Uganda. Juba is the capital of semi-autonomous Southern Sudan.

The embassy did not name the potential attackers but said the threat is of "sufficient seriousness," and that air travelers should "maintain vigilance at all times."

"[We have] received information indicating a desire by regional extremists to conduct a deadly attack on board Air Uganda aircraft," the embassy said in a statement. "[The] capacity of these extremists to carry out such an attack is unknown [...] [but] of sufficient seriousness that all American air travellers should be made aware."

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry, however, commented that the threat wasn't "serious". Foreign Ministry spokesman Moawiya Osman Khalid commented that "they did not inform us of this security threat, we learnt about it from the embassy's website," as quoted by Agence France-Presse. "They did not ask for our cooperation, which they should have done before notifying the media."

The US has increased its airport security following the failed attempted December 25 bombing of a Delta flight by a Nigerian man with explosives in his underpants. Sudan is one of fourteen countries where passengers headed for the US will undergo additional searches at airport security.

On October 14, Uganda introduced legislation that would outlaw and ban homosexuality in the nation. If politicians pass legislation, homosexuals would be forced to leave the country, or be imprisoned for life. Some human rights groups say the law would also allow authorities to kill homosexuals.

"This inflammatory bill will be taken as further confirmation that it is OK to attack or even kill people perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender," said spokesman for the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, Victor Mukasa on October 15. The organization is calling on Uganda's government to "immediately withdraw this dangerous proposal."

According to Human Rights Watch, the current law allows authorities to imprison suspected homosexuals and AIDS patients for up to 14 years. The new legislation would make the prison term a life sentence. The practice of "aggravated homosexuality" would allow the authorities to sentence homosexuals to death. Members of the public would be required to report acts of homosexuality within 24 hours of witnessing the act. If they fail to do so, they would also be imprisoned for a minimum of three years. The bill also states that the nation would be prepared to cut ties with other countries and stop any commitments they have with them to allow the new laws to be enforced.

"We used to say Mr and Mrs, but now it is Mr and Mr. What is that now? We believe there are limits to human rights," said minister of state for ethics and integrity in Uganda, James Nsaba Buturo, who supports the legislation, in an interview with The Guardian on November 29. He said that politicians are "determined" to have the law go into effect before the end of the year.

Sexual Minorities Uganda chairman Frank Mugisha also said on November 29, that if legislation "passes we [homosexuals] will have to leave the country."

Today, leaders with the Episcopal Church also spoke out against the proposed legislation. Leaders expressed "profound dismay" in a statement made by the Church on Monday.

"Our Christian faith recognizes violence, harassment and unjust treatment of any human being as a betrayal of Jesus' commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves. As followers of the teachings of Christ, we must express profound dismay at a bill currently before the Parliament in Uganda," said the statement.

Many other organizations have signed letters or statements calling for the legislation to be withdrawn. They include The World AIDS Campaign, Unitarian Universalist Church United Nations Office and Amnesty International.

Ongoing violence between national security forces and supporters of the king of an ethnic group have killed at least ten people in Kampala, Uganda.

The clashes have now been going on for two days. The conflict began when Muwenda Mutebi, the monarch of the ethnic group Buganda was prevented from travelling to the region of Kayunga by the government. Kayunga had said it seceded from his kingdom.

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni said he wouldn't permit Mutebi into the Kayunga province. "I told him [Mutebi] that the meeting in Kayunga will not take place until some conditions that will be communicated to him by the minister of internal affairs are met," the president said.

Mutebi had not been allowed to make his visit because of a "security risk", police said.

Kampala has partially shut down as a result of the violence, with most businesses in the city's centre having been closed and most workers remaining at home.

Buganda is one of four ancient Ugandan kingdoms, whose tribal members constitute the largest ethnic group in the country. Traditional kingdoms were prohibited by former president Milton Obote in 1966, but reallowed in 1993 by the current president.

Standoff in Mumbai enters third day[edit]

The battle between the Indian security forces and terrorists which have taken over various targets across the city of Mumbai has entered the third day as the Indian security forces work to clear out and rescue remaining hostages as the death toll continues to rise.

Indian forces stormed the Oberoi Trident hotel, freeing over 200 hostages there. However, reports say that 24 to 30 hostages were still killed there. Meanwhile, Indian commandos also entered the Mumbai Chabad house, where they discovered the bodies of 5 hostages.

The last area of fighting that remains is at the historic Taj Mahal Palace & Tower hotel, where gunfire and explosions have been reported.

World's oldest person dies at age 115[edit]

Edna Parker, who became the world's oldest person over a year ago, has died at the age of 115 years and 220 days in a nursing home in Shelbyville, Indiana in the United States. Parker was born on April 20, 1893. She had been recognized as the world's oldest person by Guinness World Records ever since Yone Minagawa of Japan, who was four months older than her, died in 2007.

According to UCLA gerontologist Dr. Stephen Coles, Parker was the 14th oldest validated super centenarian in history.

Congolese refugees flee for Uganda[edit]

According to the United Nations refugee agency, 13,000 people have fled into Uganda from a rebel advance in the Democratic Republic of Congo in just two days. Some of those who crossed the border said that their relatives were killed by the rebels of General Laurent Nkunda.

Nkunda's forces declared a ceasefire last week, but they say that this does not apply to operations against foreign militia. They are now attacking Rwandan Hutu militas.

Cancer spreads in American actor Patrick Swayze[edit]

The disease pancreatic cancer, which affects American actor Patrick Swayze, has spread to his liver. Reports say that he has begun to say his farewells to friends and family members in an apparent preparation for death.

Swayze, who just finished filming a new U.S. television show in Chicago, Illinois called The Beast, had publicly announced his condition in May. The reports come after an unknown source told the National Inquirer on Thursday that his cancer had spread.

The United Nations has called for wealthy donor nations to donate US$700 million (£382 million or €484 million) in emergency aid for Eastern Africa to prevent widespread famine. Since the start of 2008 the number of people living in hunger in the region has almost doubled to seventeen million, according to the UN.

UN emergency relief co-ordinator John Holmes states that food levels are dangerously low in much of Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Northern Kenya and Uganda. The area, known as the 'Horn of Africa', has seen drought, war and high food prices all worsen the situation. Holmes has warned that the levels of those in need could rise still further.

A total of $1.4 billion is to be raised for the period from now to the year's end, but at least $716 million of that remains to be found. "We may need significant funds after that period - this is not the end of the story," warned Holmes.

"We can avoid the situations of the 1980s and the 1990s which were genuine famines at different times. But we do need extra resources, very quickly indeed if we are going to avoid going back to famine situations," he said. He says Ethiopia and Somalia are in the worst states, with six million Ethiopians requiring emergency support and 43% of Somalia's population in a similar predicament.

He described locals saying that the situation has never been as bad since 1928, when vast amounts of livestock died. They say rain is needed within the next few months if there is to be any grazing and cereal crops are impossible in the near future, it being well into 2009 before anything may be ready to harvest.

The number of hungry people in the world rose by 75 million last year to 925 million. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation says high food prices are to blame for the crisis.
