Headline text[edit]

Can someone tell me if there is a Wikipedia article on this incident? Archibald99 18:49, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Found it. Archibald99 18:53, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

I'm currently using BBC News 24 as a source, as this seems more up to date than either BBC or CNN web articles; naturally I cannot provide a link for this information right now. Guinness2702 18:51, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ANyone in Canada should definitely watch CBC Newsworld on TV for information, its pouring out from there. Also see www.cbc.ca as the site is updated frequently. -- Reaper X 19:13, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Montreal?[edit]

It should be noted that Montreal is in Canada. I'm sure there are more Montreals all over the world.

There aren't. Its a big city of about 3 million. --65.92.246.117 19:02, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that it's the bigger but there are far more places called Montreal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_%28disambiguation%29 87.196.157.142 02:01, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is Montreal in France. But the current event is in Montreal / Canada (2 blocks from the office I work in)

Merge/Delete[edit]

Sorry I jumped the gun and created the article Montreal Shooting. Can someone please merge information/delete that one for me? Thanks --65.92.246.117 19:03, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

just blank the page and add it to speedy deletion requests, citing "original author requets deletion as a duplicate" and some nice admin should take care of it for you. Guinness2702 19:27, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have suggested this even be put on the In The News section on the Wikipedia Main Page. -- Reaper X 19:16, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I urge editors to also go to Wikipedia:Dawson College shooting, and transfer appropriate information to the article. It needs to be expanded to be placed on the Wikipedia Main Page in the view of administrators. --64.231.107.152 (Reaper X) 64.231.106.56
Please do not attempt to cross-source a breaking news event. This will garner suspicion from long-term editors on both Wikis. Information on wikinews should not be used to contribute to wikipedia until it has passed into a fixed, archived, state. Information included on wikinews from wikipedia must be non-controversial, which excludes any article which is going to have the recent event tag this will have. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:32, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hence, "appropriate", perhaps I should elaborate. Anything that is cited and confirmable, etc. -- Reaper X 19:46, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

High-traffic article.[edit]

This looks like being an article that will attract a lot of editors, can we have a synopsis up-front then the sections, and can people try and edit the sections to avoid conflicts. Please detail which channels are running coverage for the Original Reporting, and what countries/timezones they are being observed in. Particularly useful is quotes from the variety of talking heads they roll out, the more detailed a description of when the piece of information was released, the easier it is to use. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:18, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I already split it up into sections :) BBC News 24 reports cited by me (which is most of my edits) is coming from UK (this coverage is no longer continuous). Is there a proper way to cite TV coverage? I couldn't see anything in the help pages. Guinness2702 19:31, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Create yourself a new section on the page, detail what you're watching when, and what pieces of information you lifted from it. Original Reporting where TV is most current can be a bit messy. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:33, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Like so? Guinness2702 19:56, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Er no, like so...
Oops...okay, I guess I misunderstood "the page" Guinness2702 20:12, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I've not been in the position of kicking about when a breaking event has come through, there's probably something could be salvaged from the wording below for when people create stuff from TV reports on significant events. The key things to look for are, government spokespersons (if you can jot down the name...), precise quotes, and good reporting with an eye to our Neutral point of view policy. I'm afraid the only reward is to see your contributions protected when they're ten days old and added to Wikimedia's contribution to historical records, but looking at that can be a reminder of how you enjoyed making the contribution. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:26, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Events described in this article are based on a number of Wikinews contributors watching live TV coverage of the events. Detailed below are the main items from TV coverage that the wikinews article relies upon. Each should include which TV channel broadcast the information, who said the information (for quotes), and which editor added it to the article. Fog of war issues surrounding contributions prior to this section being created should be sourced on a best-effort basis, and from mainstream sources as they catch up. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:09, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good Great work guys...really. :) Jason Safoutin 21:23, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

news articles[edit]

As information from the above articles is added to the article, the used source should be put on the article page using the {{source}} template. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:44, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Title?[edit]

Why not "20 shot by gunman at a Montreal college"? terinjokes User Page / Talk 22:35, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • It isn't particulary accurate as it has only been reported as 20 injured not 20 shot. Some of those injuries could have been caused by other occurances such as people running away. Gothesque 23:33, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, disregarde that, I misunderstood what you meant. Your suggestion makes more grammatical sense to me but I'm still not certain that the current title is appropriate/accurate. Gothesque 23:39, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, the title is not very appropriate at this time. 20 people being shot is unconfirmed, and may be subject to change as it may be an incorrect figure. But it beats me what to name it. -- Reaper X 00:13, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update?[edit]

Okay, its been two days now, and so some of the facts have emerged. Now I am new to Wikinews (I'm normally just a Wikipedian), so I am unsure: Do we update this article so it has hard facts or do we leave it so it has the "preliminary report" tone? -- Reaper X 18:51, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Phone numbers[edit]

The phone numbers listed on the page appear to me as strange... since when do we have a + in front of our numbers in Québec, or even in Canada?

The numbers have been "internationalized" with a country code, "1" being North America's country code.
