OR Notes[edit]

On my computer, it was aljazeera.com where the hack appeared. That is where I gathered the screenshot from. When I accessed aljazeera.net, the website appeared as normal. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 19:06, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

At approximately 2030 BST [1930 UTC] today I contacted Al Jazeera English by phone and asked the call operator who responded how I could ask Al Jazeera for comment. She responded by asking me to send an email. At 2052 BST [1952 UTC] today I sent an email to belle.lupton@aljazeera.net, CC'd to press.int@aljazeera.net, which reads:

"Dear Al Jazeera

I am a contributor to Wikinews, which is owned by the Wikimedia Foundation, the same organisation which owns Wikipedia.

You may be aware that earlier today [Tuesday 4 September], the website aljazeera.com [and, according to some reports, aljazeera.net as well] was hacked by a group identifying itself as 'Al-Rashedon'. I do not know the exact purpose of the group, although I would speculate that it is an Internet protest group supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

I understand that an Arabic language statement on the hacked page translates to read: "We have hacked you because your lack of support of Syrian government and militant groups backed by that government. Al Jazeera has been spreading lies. We're compelled to do so on behalf of the Syrian people."

I was interested in finding out what comment you like to make about this incident. I also ask if you would like to volunteer to be interviewed by me for Wikinews.

Please get back to me as soon as you can. Your help would be much appreciated.

Yours sincerely Ryan Louis Peteranna"

I do not know how to link to the email. More details as they develop. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 20:08, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
