Awkward[edit]

The [] in the quotes make it a bit awkward to read. Is there any way to define a context for the quotes that means they aren't needed? Brianmc 16:00, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I don't now. Brackets are actually a common way to provide context for quotes. --Deprifry|+T+ 16:39, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I thought they were a last resort, and you'd use something like speaking about attacks directed against Israel, Ahmadinejad said that there was, "no doubt the new wave in Palestine will soon wipe off this disgraceful blot from the face of the Islamic world.". As to the vitriol directed at the US, I understand it is a widely held belief that if not for the support of the U.S. the Israeli state would probably not exist. As it stands, the article does cover the "blame" directed at the West for the mid-east problems. Anyway, I suppose it is difficult to work around strict translations of what was probably political "rabble-rousing". Brianmc 19:31, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In Iran, the term "world oppressor" or "world arrogance" is used pretty much as a synonym for United States by people like Ahmadinejad (see [1] or [2]). It dates back, I think, to Khomeini who "popularized", if you will, the usage of these phrases when refering to the US. I'm just not sure how to incorporate that in the article to further explain the quote. --Deprifry|+T+ 19:58, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Just noticed this talk... and was myself a little uneasy with the bracketed quote. I made changes... readably smooth I hope. -Edbrown05 20:46, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You addressed the second one quite nicely. Now it looks a lot better with just one clarifying quote. I think it was the two that made it bad. Brianmc 20:59, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ditto. Nicely done, thanks. --Deprifry|+T+ 21:03, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There's nothing awkward about this article now. BBC also has an article on the story [3] Brianmc 22:03, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Another mistranslation?[edit]

Since this article has the exclusive stance that it is Iran's and Ahmadinejad's opinion that Israel should be destroyed by violence, I think it would be fair to include the view that his statement would have been better-translated as "I have no doubt that the new movement taking place in our dear Palestine is a wave of morality which is spanning the entire Islamic world and which will soon remove this stain of disgrace from the Islamic world." http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article14733.htm

This wikinews article is linked to from the 'pedia article about Ahmadinejad's comments about Zionism, which very carefully maintains neutrality; this article is not neutral, so it was a quite a shock coming from there to here.
