Title[edit]

I don't think I really consider the "shootdown considered" element of the title to be appropriate. An intercept does not immediately mean they were considering to shoot it down. Of the sources listed only ABC seem to suggest a shootdown as close. I think this is an attempt to dramatise the story by ABC that we shouldn't be following. (edit conflict)I think it is an attempt at sensationalism, but ironically I also think it's actually right. These guys expect to have to shoot unresponsive aircraft down, the very fact jets were scrambled means they were considering it. Cannot be 100% but from what I know it is also standard procedure for US jets to go only standby. Which means they literally power up all weapons to assume that the situation is dangerous.
