ufo in north carolina

i saw the same thing just years before this one appeared. blue red white smoke colored lights.it hovered over hw 51 in pineville nc back in the late eighties. i watched for a while my father beig a policeman found me and told me to go home get in doors. i asked him what is this he never told me. he said i dont know and always stuck by his answer. but it was really weird to me.
