Is Kligon a so bad language ? ;) Lol (mort de rire !) Jacques Divol

Original reporting notes[edit]

The author of the article gave me the original reporting notes — a table of all 131 surveys submitted. Anyone interested in it should ask me on my talk page. —this is messedr͏̈ocker (talk) 21:08, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the problem[edit]

my problem with this survey is that A, of the 131 surveys, 96 were ignored to produce the desired result. B, the survey itself only reported 2 french speakers and 3 klingon speakers. With such small, obviously statistically insignificant figures (considering that the survey's conclusion could completly change via 1 person lieing (which was seen in the study as 2 students claimed to speak 18 languages)), and not to mention the fact that the students didn't have to demonstrate their proficiency in a language, it is devious to even make the claim that this study is representative of even the test group themselves (as the title indicates). This is why I made the revisions that I did and why I call this to be anecdotal.

Concerning the citation, considering the fact that the study itself cannot be considered valid (as quite obviously this wasn't only a study of 11th grade males, though only that section of the data was used) I suppose it doesn't matter. 65.89.12.2 17:01, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the point is that while the rest of the survey was normal, there was an oddity for the section for Grade 11 males. That, I believe, was the author's intent for the article. —this is messedr͏̈ocker (talk) 17:06, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

- This is exactly my point. This observation was just an oddity, a random fluke (possibly 3 students found this choice funny and decided to mark it down) and does not justify a title such as "Parlez-vous français? Qapla’! More Grade 11 boys proficient in Klingon than French: local survey." A title like that implies that this was an actual (statistically significant) observation, and not just an oddity. Personally I feel that the article should be deleted. 65.89.12.2 17:25, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. This article does not support its claim "More 11 grade boys proficient in Klingon than French" in any way. Tzepish 17:51, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No need for this[edit]

This study has no merit whatsoever. It barely belongs in a school newspaper. - McCart42 01:28, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it seems a little too local to really be newsworthy. Maerk 13:23, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Local news is permitted on Wikinews, particularly with the category "Local only". However, this article wasn't tagged with such a category because it seemed to have an appeal outside of the city it took place in. —this is messedr͏̈ocker (talk) 19:42, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

delete[edit]

Does someone want to go ahead and delete it? I would, but I haven't figured out how yet. 65.89.12.2 14:54, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please, someone delete this article. I also don't know how. Bill3 17:07, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To file this for deletion, put {{dr}} at the top of the article (not this talk page), then follow the instruction on Wikinews:Deletion requests for a deletion request. —this is messedr͏̈ocker (talk) 17:11, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I don't know if it qualifies for a deletion or a retraction... —this is messedr͏̈ocker (talk) 17:14, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This was on the main page... and it's absolutely pointless and has no merit. In a survey of hundreds, only two or three were used to represent a whole population. In addition, why is it compared to French, and not other languages like Spanish? Demographics aren't analyzed at all, and the author's POV is that all students should know French. This is very poor journalism. --64.173.171.124 04:33, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I recall that it was compared to French because students have to learn French. —this is messedr͏̈ocker (talk) 04:50, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Precisely; see the penultimate paragraph. It's not POV: the goal of six years of mandatory French classes is obviously to produce bilingual graduates, and only 30% of senior students actually are bilingual, hence the problem. Seahen 04:46, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You might be about to do this, but you'll need to list the page at WN:DR as well... R2b2 04:44, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
