they did have metal dectors, but weren't always on. check the AP reference again 23:39, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

I've updated this. All information that I had at the time of writing, mainly the interview on CNN which I viewed live and confirmed on the MTV News report, indicated that metal detectors were not present.
