From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!
I have been an active Wikinews editor from September 2005 to March 2007 and a rather inactive editor since May 2007. I'll really only be editing here when I don't have work to do during school; I pass the time copyediting articles. Maybe someday I'll write an article again.
Anyways, after writing my first article, I decided to join three months later. I don't regret doing that; I loved the time I've spent at Wikinews. However now I'm just tired of it. Like I said, I'll be working more towards copyediting articles.
For the record, I'm a he.
I also like this explanation of Thanksgiving:
- "As punishment for the coordinated genocide of indigineous peoples of North America, you are hereby condemned to eat dry tasteless breast meat from ugly helpless fowl once a year, never to know that stuffing onesself, watching football and falling asleep on the couch will lead to adult onset diabetes and bad knees in a country without universal healthcare."
[edit] Wikinews improvement projects
In the past I've engaged in the following Wikinews improvement projects:
- Browsing Wikinews - While we have a very nice portal system and browse-by-date system, they don't connect together. Therefore, the only way to browse is if you have a knowledge of how Wikinews works, which is a horrible idea. In my namespace, I created a draft for a new browsing system that not only newcomers can use without a problem, but it is well organized and connects all the browsing methods. After finishing touches, Wikinews:Browse went live. With the assistance of Jill St. Crux, it continues to improve day by day.
- Main Page layout - The current main page layout is very ugly, with the news-by-date on the left side and every other thing you can think of in the small blue box on the side. It's very confused-looking, so I created one of the many redesigns (and another one) of the main page. Additionally, I created Wikinews:Main Page redesign to coordinate all the efforts.
- MessedRobot - To help me with my Wikinews maintenance, I've enlisted the help of the Python Wikipedia Bot to do some automated tasks for me. See User:MessedRobot
- Water Cooler overhaul - The goal of this project was to introduce a standard archiving format, a standard archive list, and basically have everything standardized, organized, and look very good. The project is now finished.
- Image sorting - Before, all there was was a fair use category and a random smattering of some categories. Now, each type of fair use claim and copyleft license, as well as public domain, has its own category, as well as proper nesting under a new root category, Category:Images. Future plans include integrating it into Wikinews:Browse
- Global Networking - Since the whole way-of-getting-the-news out needed to be re-organized, I created Wikinews:Global Networking, encompassing parts of Wikinews:Reference desk and Wikinews:Wikinewsies (and subpages).
- Wikinews Contest - Encourage the development of Wikinews with a promised cash incentive to the Wikinewsie who can do the most
