The trial of 17 Kosovo Albanians charged with murder, rape and torture of civilians in Kosovo in 1999 opened on Thursday (September 24th) at the war crimes court. According to the indictment, the former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army killed at least 80 civilians -- Serbs, Romas and Albanians -- between June and December 1999; another 153 people allegedly were tortured and mutilated by them in the eastern Kosovo town of Gnjilane. Nine of the defendants were in court Thursday. The other eight remain at large and are being tried in absentia. (Beta, Tanjug, DPA - 24/09/09)
