The bodies of ten people have been found along a 3.5 mile stretch of beach inin the last five months. The latest two, found on Monday, were only recently confirmed to be human remains.
The police feel confident that the first set of eight bodies found were likely all disposed of by the same killer, however they have not yet conclusively linked the remaining bodies to the same killer. Most of the bodies are those ofwho advertised their services on Craigs List, although one body is that of a child. Authorities are uncertain if the body of the child is related to the others at all.
The remote location, and thick brush make the location an ideal dumping ground for murder victims. Police believe the killer(s) are likely very familiar with the area, and the fact that few people visit the area. Further complicating the situation is the fact that the salty environment can speed-up bodily, and the thick brush makes the ongoing search for clues and victims slow and difficult. Additionally, several police officers are reported to have been infected with .
Police are investigating several suspects in relation to the first eight corpses found. They have indicated that they believe the suspect could be a former law enforcement officer, or someone familiar with law enforcement tactics.
Law enforment officials believe the suspect is likely a male, and probably appears to live a very ordinary life. The suspect has made several taunting phone calls to the families of his victims. All the calls were placed from crowded locations, where he could not be picked out on a CCTV, and were made from disposable cell phones with no contracts. The calls were kept short, less than three minutes, likely in an attempt to make it difficult to trace the call.
"Without question this guy is smart, this guy is not a dope. it's a guy who thinks about things." One officer is reported as saying.
Amanda Barthelemy, the 16 year old sister of one of the victims, identified as Melissa Barthelemy, received taunting phone calls from the killer. She appeared on Good Morning America recently and said "I just don't understand why he chose me... how many other girls and how many other families... why was I chosen, why was I taunted?"
