Copyeditor's Award

The Copyeditor's Barnstar is awarded to those who have spent significant amounts of time contributing to Wikinews articles not by writing, but instead by engaging in a critically important activity: copyediting. Congratulations! Gopher65talk 22:02, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't finished going through your editprotected requests, but keep piling them on if you want to. I'll get to them eventually. Gopher65talk 22:02, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You've been a prolific copyeditor, and I completely agree with Gopher. I hearby award you another Copyeditor's Barnstar. R.T. 22:21, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since everyone seems to be in the mood for piling on barnstars, I think I'll add mine as well. Excellent work! Tempo di Valse ♪ 18:47, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Let's give you a third copyeditor barnstar for your excellent efforts in improving our articles. Great job, Wikinews needs more editors like you! Tempo di Valse ♪ 18:47, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

Perhaps you would like to try WN:AWB? I think it will help make your typo fixing and article copyediting more efficient. Best regards, Tempo di Valse ♪ 19:05, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've tried it a few years ago, but I didn't like it back then. Also, I have a Mac (in combination with Firefox) and it is only available for Windows. Besides, I cannot edit protected pages, so currently it isn't very useful. Cheers, Van der Hoorn (talk) 19:18, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

Hi. Great work with the typo fixing. Just one suggestion: perhaps you be a little more specific when making an editprotected request? Currently, you only mention what word it is, and not where specifically it is located. It will be easier for administrators making the correction if you say where the typo is (i.e. 3rd paragraph from bottom, 2nd from top paragraph, etc.), so that we don't have to go through the entire article (which can be quite long) looking for it. Best regards, Tempo di Valse ♪ 14:57, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, I thought you just did a CTRL-F and typed in the word, so you search for it. At least, that is what I do. But I'll see if I can be a bit more specific. :) Cheers, Van der Hoorn (talk) 15:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! I never knew that a word search tool existed -- I see it now. Don't bother with my suggestion, I can use the search tool instead. Thanks. Tempo di Valse ♪ 15:03, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Admin

You're almost at the two months of activity threshold for an admin application. Personally, I don't see that as a hard and fast rule and would be prepared to nominate you if you'd prefer that to applying yourself. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:51, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I'm only at almost one month of activity. :) Also, the admin level comes with various other responsibilities, such as vandalism monitoring, user upgrades/blocking, archiving and protecting pages, etc. I'm not sure if I'm motivated enough for those activities. On the other hand, I think it may be useful for editing protected pages, so I'm kind of in dubio. I appreciate your support very much, but I seriously wonder if one month of editing is enough. :) I think I'll wait some more days to increase the chance of success. Cheers, Van der Hoorn (talk) 19:49, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to increase your chances of becoming an administrator, you might want to consider doing some other things here, other than typo fixing (although that is very much appreciated, and I thank you for it). Writing some articles, fighting vandalism, and participating in discussions will greatly increase your chances of success, because then other users will be able to see that you can exercise proper judgement and understand site policy, two necessary traits for an administrator. I personally would not oppose a nomination by you, should you choose to apply. Best regards, Tempo di Valse ♪ 20:00, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fighting vandalism is something I could do, but I mostly do it only when I come across it. However, I do sight older pages when I come across them to make sure edits have to be done by editors. Writing articles may not be my strongest point. Also when I do one thing, I cannot do the other; time is limited of course. :) I'll try to participate in discussions more often, good suggestion, thanks. Cheers, Van der Hoorn (talk) 23:39, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, and another very useful thing you can do is to review articles -- that is always appreciated, and could be a plus in an admin nomination. You can do reviews, now that you have editor status. Best regards, Tempo di Valse ♪ 14:10, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing the archive

Hi Van der Hoorn. You are extremely effective in finding typos, etc. in the archive of articles, as well as elsewhere. However, due to the backlog it is creating, do you think it would make sense to work with someone with Wikinews:AutoWikiBrowser? Just a thought. Cheers, --SVTCobra 00:08, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your point; two things:
  1. Maybe it is useful, but how do you propose it's done? Somehow I must communicate the typos, right?
  2. The backlog is already there, you just can't see it right now; only because I point to the typos and other improvements, they suddenly see the light, i.e. if I don't point to the typos, they're still there to be fixed one day. :)

UOM conversion templates

These look like a really good idea, but a couple of points to consider.

  • They should probably be fully protected - once in widespread use the impact of vandalising a template could be significant.
  • Their use probably merits a page listing them, and detailing their usage. I would also suggest that such a page be linked to from the style guide.

--Brian McNeil / talk 12:20, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was first trying to copy Template:Convert, but it's too large and we probably don't need all conversions Convert is capable of. Fully protecting them seems like a fine idea. On the other hand, doesn't the flagged revisions system protect the template? Or is the draft version of templates used?
  • They are all in Category:Conversion templates (which is also used on Wikipedia). Which section of the style guide do you think is appropriate for mentioning the templates?

Hi, I noticed you signed up to participate in my writing contest. The contest is ready, you can start contributing articles anytime from now up to March 31st. Tempo di Valse ♪ 14:45, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sourcing

I found it at w:Czech Airlines, thanks. In the future, you might want to make a mention that you took information from Wikipedia on the article's talk page, as not every reviewer will check WP as a source. Best regards, Tempo di Valse ♪ 15:34, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
