Welcome [edit]
159753, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Style guide - how articles should look before publishing
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- Audio Wikinews could always use more contributors
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! CGorman 15:44, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
datelines/bylines [edit]
Hi, I just want to caution against adding datelines/bylines to articles unless you were actually at the event being covered. To quote from Encarta: "dateline - line giving date and location: a line at the head of a newspaper article or similar item giving the date and place of writing" - we don't want to mislead readers by suggesting we were there, when we weren't! Can I suggest using the {{date|month dd,yyyy}} template instead? PS Thanks for your work on Wikinews! Dan100 (Talk) 19:09, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Thanks! [edit]
Thanks for the image of the ballot box - that is the sort of initiative that allows us to be more agile and indeed better than the established media. → CGorman (Talk) 21:13, 29 May 2005 (UTC)
Moving stories [edit]
I know you only did it with good intentions - but you should not have moved the exit poll story to a results story. You should have created a new article about the final results; you see we have now lost our coverage of the particular event as at late night June 1st. Wikinews wishs to become a massive archive of historical events as time goes by; so we encourage multiple articles about the same thing, for example with the french story we had:
- An exit poll story: Exit poll: 55% of French voters say no to EU constitution
- A results story: France votes no in EU referendum
- A story on the political consequences: France gets a new prime minister
We also could have had articles on the following if we had the manpower:
- A pre vote article like France goes to the polls
- A comment article like Jacque Chirac urges voters to say yes
- An aftermath article French 'non' likely to influence Dutch voters
Don't worry about it this time, just learn for the future. → CGorman (Talk) 09:52, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
