cats, stats and bowler hats[edit]

G'day,

You seem to be up on categories. what is category:australasia for and how does it differ from oceania. Also, how does one make a new category, and how does one make a category a sub-category of another cat? These damn things confuse me. Cheers ~The bellman | Smile 14:41, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's what i'd always thought, but it doesnt seem to have worked with Category:Niue, cause in World's smallest democracy votes it's still showing up as a red link (after a forced refresh and an emptying of my chache). So how do you make a top level cat then (since you can't put any parent cats in it)? As for Australasia, i've never heard it mean anything other than oceania (and if you look at the wikipedia talk page, you'll see more confusion about the term by kiwis). I really think it's a bit useless if all it describes is Australia and NZ, which are really big enough to not need an other level of abstraction. ~The bellman | Smile 23:56, 2 May 2005 (UTC) Update: ah, but it does seem to be a blue link here. Oh well, we'll just have to write this one off as a piece of wierdness and move on. ~The bellman | Smile 23:57, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My ego[edit]

Hi, I posted a response to Dan100 on the complaints he had about the interview. I think he misunderstood some things, not his fault, it's just the way the story was written. I don't think my ego is working overtime, but I would like the opportunity to apologize to anyone if I've said or done anything annoying. I work for you. --Jimbo Wales 16:37, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Just wanted to drop by and say thanks for the warm welcome (addressed to my IP, as I wasn't logged in) ^_^

Keep up the good work! --Patrick Bernier 10:16, 2005 May 4 (UTC)

Western Balkans coverage[edit]

Hi, just want to let you know that three countries which were previously red on the coverage map now have some articles about them! Serbia and Montenegro has 4, while Albania and Macedonia have 1. I'll write one about Bosnia and Herzegovina soon so that the whole region can at least be stripped of the red :) Concerning Country of the Week, I voted for Moldova. Over here in Romania, and I think from many other places in Europe, Moldova is frequently looked down upon, because it's Europe's poorest country, is unstable, etc. But I think that it deserves at least some coverage, and it really stands out as it is a sea of red surrounded by Romania's green and Ukraine's brown. Other than that, I'm really excited about the new developments at Wikinews...it seems the project has matured much more in the past few weeks, and while we haven't been getting an increase in articles recently, I think the quality of the contributions makes up for that. Cheers, Ronline 12:29, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the chart. → CGorman (Talk) 21:11, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wkinews Country of the Week Chart[edit]

Concerning the last editions at May 1, 2005: I think the Netherlands are indexed a shade to low. We've crossed the 4 articles some time ago, as you can see in category:Netherlands. Perhaps you could correct this in the next update? Thanks. -- Redge (Talk) 16:05, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the chart. → CGorman (Talk) 21:12, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite; just went on holidays! → CGorman (Talk) 20:28, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lol, glad you're back. As you've probably noticed, while you were gone, DV quit. See his user page to read why. A real loss to the project, imo. Dan100 (Talk) 20:57, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OMG, thanks Dan. → CGorman (Talk) 18:04, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OMG after finding out DV's gone I feel dead. Im in shock. → CGorman (Talk) 21:05, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mediation Works; Dispute Settled:))[edit]

Ok, I tried to remove all the stuff I put in.Hopefully I did not remove anyone else's. I do think its important for the whole community to get involved in dispute resolution. It can be a wonderful thing as what just happened with Dan100 coming in to settle the whole thing. I am particularly sorry that C Gorman feels I was not sincere. Its really hard to see what's going on on the other side of the computer, but I certainly am sorry he feels that way. Its just..to be really personal here... it just burns my ass to see innocent people hurt and killed (or see a loved one come home in a bodybag as I have) and then to see the very people who caused it getting media attention like they are just "doing their best" and "spreading freedom"..so I am really upset about this story [[1]] languishing under a dispute tag right now at this moment in history. Anyway, the good news is that mediation works. And I want to especially thank Dan100. So..on we go :))))) Paulrevere2005 20:51, 10 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

/.[edit]

Amgine told me in IRC (during the calm before the storm) that apparently several of our stories have been /'ed before now, but it seems no-ones being writing them down :(. I didn't submit that one, btw! Dan100 (Talk) 21:54, 11 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please review this breaking news story[edit]

U.S. Senator calls for nationwide investigation into Army recruitment tactics Please review and remove the tag if its ok. Amgine asked(my talk)if someone other than he do it. Paulrevere2005 12:12, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I left before getting your message earlier today and only saw it a minute ago. I suppose its irrelevent now. → CGorman (Talk) 21:07, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews coverage stats[edit]

Of course you can update it on my user page! In fact, I'd be very happy if you did that :) I haven't been on Wikinews lately because I'm currently in the middle of a project at Romanian Wikipedia (incidentally, focussing on Ireland - I've written detailed pages about Celtic Tiger, Dublin, Luas, Connolly Station in the past few days, and Celtic Tiger (Tigrul Celtic) is currently the featured article (articol fructuos) at the Romanian Wikipedia Main Page. I'm also preparing Wikipedia coverage for Eurovision Song Contest history. Cheers, Ronline 10:25, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Piano man[edit]

I just updated Talk:"Do you know this pianist?" asks helpline to ask you to modify or expand your interview questions by noon thursday, ET. By then, I'll know whether I'm going forward or retracting. Thanks! Stevietheman 03:26, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I just answered what questions were there, but I really don't know how to put together an interview article. Perhaps somebody else could get it started, and I'll be happy act as an editor. Stevietheman 20:19, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Eurovision[edit]

Eurovision treated as a big joke in Ireland? Really? I mean Ireland's done so well in the past decade that I thought it would be taken more seriously!?! Anyway, for Romania this is a pretty big thing in the sense that it's perhaps the biggest way to promote itself outside of the political-economic sphere. You should see the media reaction here though. Gardianul reports on the front page, "The Masquarade of Eurovision", saying that Romania should've won and that Greece and Malta's win was purely for political reasons! I think though that it's going a bit too far that in the year when Romania gets its best place ever, by far, they're crying out louder than ever! I was also thinking of the same thing about voting and its weight, but I think scaling votes based on size would probably attract more controversy. All in all, I think that voting "masquarade" is what makes the event fun. It wouldn't be good if it were taken too seriously. We have EU negotiations and all the economic progress for taking seriously, the rest can be a bit more fun! What I got most out of the Eurovision this year was the promotion it did for Ukraine. Even though Romania and Ukraine are neighbours, I had no idea of the beauty of the country. And they organised it much better than I would've thought. I think this was a good chance for them to step back into the European family after so many decades of ignorance. Ronline 23:52, 22 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

CGorman thank you for the warm welcome. I am truly honored to be a part of the team at Wikinews. Jedimastermactreebeard 04:17, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What a warm welcome![edit]

Thanks! And the embarrassing secret is that I'm terribly impatient... and I wanted a current news article on Ireland for the Wikiportal page that I found a news story and wrote it myself! (And, being Northern Ireland, I wound up contributing to the UK page as well...) Don't hesitate to look over my stuff, too...I'm no stranger to journalism, but I'm not a pro either. France votes[edit]

That is ok. I have done a graphic for the coming Swiss referenda on the 5th June on civil unions and Schengen/Dublin. Should I should to one for the Netherlands? 159753 21:35, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
