Hi,

thanks for working on so many articles. Please try to get some of them into the review stage, otherwise they might be lingering in development for too long. One issue with most of the pages you worked on: It would be helpful if you could cite the sources at the bottom more extensively, e.g. for a Reuters story, cite the title of the story and the date along with the link to the online copy. This is important because these websites take down their stories after a while, and without a headline and date, it becomes almost impossible to track them down.--Eloquence 03:14, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I have deleted those pages because they were at the Deletion Request page. Those pages were voted as deleted(case I did no mistake). Reorganized South America and Central America

Hi! Since you frequently write articles about South America and Central America, I wanted to let you know that I've reorganized the way the pages work a bit. Until there are more editors working from those countries, there's only one place for latest news for those countries, in addition to the main homepage latest news — South America/Latest News. By adding news to that page, you get the news listed on all the category pages for all the countries in South America, and the South America page as well (though sometimes the cache needs purging). I've been following the guideline of "7 days or 7 articles, whichever is greater" per category. So "Politics and conflicts" on that page would list either the last seven days worth events, or if there isn't seven days worth of events then the last 7 links. Easy to remember, I hope.

Anyway, please take a look and let me know what you think. I've also added Central America and Central America/Latest News (which gets included in the same way). -- IlyaHaykinson 10:22, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I think you are still misunderstanding the correct place to add stories — on the South America page there is an [ edit ] link at the bottom right which should take you to South America/Latest news where you can add the * Jan. 17: [[link to story]]. Hmm, I'd take out the extra information in that graf, since it doesn't have bearing on Lula's relationship with Castro. In fact, it'd probably be a good idea to take it out of this article for now and save it for another article, one more focused on Lula's relationship with the press and/or civil liberties.

BTW, thanks for your continuing coverage of South America. We very rarely get to hear news about your part of the world in the United States.

I have this idea, where by articles from the same event should all be in the same article, and would like to try it out with WSF articles. I'm going to move the main article to 2005 World Social Forum, and then create within that a subsection called 2005 World Social Forum#The World Social Forum kicks off in Porto Alegre, which i will link to from the main page as [[2005 World Social Forum#The World Social Forum kicks off in Porto Alegre|The World Social Forum kicks off in Porto Alegre]]<nowiki>. Then i will write another section below that which is a summary of the first day. If you have strong objections to this experiment please feel free to revert it back into seperate articels; after all we are in beta, so we can still experiment with different ways of doing things. ~~~~

You could write a separate article describing the event across the days. This article would not have a specific date. There is a problem when you think changing the original article 2005 World Social Forum in Porto Alegre; the problem is nobody will see it. The most of people read the article once and they don't return to that article again. Also, if we start doing a lot of changes in an article, the people will not have too much trust in that article (that is what I think). So I think we should write a separate article and the people must be warned that the article is going to change and that it is a dynamic coverup of an event. -- Carlosar 23:47, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hey, i dont think i explained what i was doing very well. Sorry. I'll try again. Ok, under my proposal, the articles would be exactly the same as they are normaly. The text would be exactly the same, and all that would be different would be that they have a different namespace. Instead of [en.wikinews.org/wiki/foobar] it would be [en.wikinews.org/wiki/foo#bar]. It would be linked to from the mainpage in exactly the same way as it is normaly (ie. each new article would get a new link from the mainpage. Unless you click view source, you wouldnt know it was any different. Now i'll explain the advantages.

• With certain titles of events that regularly reoccur such as American soldiers being killed in Iraq, Palistinian suicide bombings, Israeli incursions into the west bank, Sharks eating people off the south Austrlaian coast, Crocs eating tourists in Kakadu etc. etc. we will quickly run out of Namespace. There can only ever be one article called Croc eats tourist in Kakadu. That means the next time the same thing happens we will have to come up with a different title. Slowly the titles will get longer and longer and less like headlines. In three years from now it will have to be croc eats a bavarian tourist in Kakadu National Park, 250 kms from Darwin. Then in 6 years when a croc eats another german tourist in Kakadu (it happens far more often than you may think) it will have to be Croc eats a bavarian tourist named Jens in Kakadu National Park, in the Northern Teritory of Australia, 250 kms from Darwin. And as time goes on the Headline will get longer and longer and less and less like a headline, simply cause all the good headlines have all ready been taken. Now with my Idea, we seperate the idea of namespace (the actual URL of the story) and the headline. The headline would be the section heading (note: this is an <h1> or in wikimarkup thats two equal signs ==foo==, any other heading (like references or whatever) we'd use <h2> or three equal signs ===foo===). So the headline could still be Croc eats tourist in Kakadu even though the URL was longer.
• With events like the WSF it will be an awesome tool for researchers (wikipedians included) because it would colate all the articles about one event together, so that one could see the changes over time. Also, as a general rule once a new section (article) is added the articles above would not be allowed to be edited (except for typos and perhaps a special updates subsection).
• It would make things easier to organise and search through for researchers and wikinews editors.
• It would be easy for someone who read the 3rd article in a set, to become intersted in the content and go back and look at the previous articles for further background.

NB: linking to [en.wikinews.org/wiki/WSF 2005#3rd day of WSF wraps up] will take you to the specific section/article rather than the top of the WSF page.

I'm going to leave the WSF articles as they are, but im going to move them all to my user pages to make a mock up of my proposal. paz y amor.

Zapatero article

Hi. I have just noticed that the Zapatero article here looks quite similar in strucutre and vocaburary to an article here [1]. I am wondering what to do about it.. and thought to ask your opinion first. Tomos

They are similar probably because they are a translation of the same source: El Periodico, Barcelona.

Anyway you are right. The article is not so good. I did some changes so the article can be published. What do you think now? However I recognize this article maybe is a small mistake. Thanks for the quick reply. I have to admit that I am no expert on U.S. copyright (which is what we have to consider), but if the article was a verbatim translation of a copyrighted article in another language without permission, I am relatively sure that we should request it for deletion. Exclusive rights of the copyright holder [2] includes creation of derivative work, and the term is defined at the beginning part of the law [3] and it says translation is among derivative works.

What if there is some modification? I don't know.. w:Fair use provision of the U.S. copyright law is often interpreted (in court) to mean that more new values you add to the work, and change to purposes of the work, more likely your use is to qualify as a fair use. (The term for this is "transformative use.") So if you change the work enough, then it will become fair use, and if you change further, the work will become an original work. To me, creating an English version of a news story otherwise unavailable for the English-speaking general public sounds like already enough of a transformation. But the text of the copyright law says otherwise. So I feel like I'm not able to make a good judgment. :-(

Bylines/dates

Just a quick note about using bylines (which have both date and location) - the location is actually where the reporter who filed the story is. With big news organisations that's often where the story happened, with reporters writing news first-hand. However, as we're tending to re-write stories from elsewhere, we should use the {{date|April 18, 2005}} template, if we're not actually located where the story happened. Something like just 'BRAZIL' in the byline is fine though of course when you're doing a Brazil story.

The other thing was just to say keep an eye on the UTC time - we start new days on Latest news at midnight UTC, which is about 9pm your time I guess. So if you're finish writing a story after then, be sure to put it on the new UTC day's article page, or it could be 'lost' on yesterday's news! Dan100 (Talk) 12:02, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure you want my opinion.

I believe both your articles on this topic to be "attack articles", that is they are biased against the PT. For example, although the article is about Abin, you include the logo of the FARC. And in your previous article you used strong declarative sentences (so-and-so did this) in this article you use diffident sentences (so-and-so has stated documents may be incorrect.) In comparing the articles, briefly, I do not feel either is particularly neutral or balanced. I have not done an in-depth fact checking of the article, but am commenting on the over-all article tone or angle.

legal issues

Actually, there is a legal problem with your article, if it is in great part a translation of the Oil-for-Food Program article on Wikipedia. Wikinews is public domain, whereas wikipedia is gfdl, and the two aren't compatible. GDFL work can't be turned into public domain material like that.. Looks good. i made a few grammar corrections. (one, i think) the edit you made: " Furnas denied. Its directors resigned due to Jefferson's accusations against the company." is grammatically incorrect, and i dont' know what you meant to do here. "Furnas denied." is not a complete sentence. what did furnas deny? This sticks out like a sore thumb for an english reader, but I didn't revert it because I didn't know what you meant to do. Also, one can't say objectively that that is the reason its directors resigned, this needs to be attributed to a source. for example, if the directors said that that was their reason, it should say something like "Furnas' directors resigned, stating that their reasons were related to Jefferson's accusations against the company." BTW, your most common translation mistakes were:

• use of the word "told". "told" must always be followed by an audience, such as "she told him that '...'", and "said" is more common. (for what it's worth, "said" is a perfectly neutral word; it has no connotations, which is partly why it's so common. "told" is more commanding and assertive, but if one truly wants to describe someone's speech as being assertive, one simply says "asserted", and this implies a very percetible difference in the speaker's gestures and tone of voice.)
• "evidences" should always be "evidence". "evidence" is like "water": it is already plural. Unlike "water", however, it is treated in a sentence as if it is singular. This is because it does not refer to specific items as items, but to the fact that such items support the hypothesis that certain events occured. "evidence" refers primarily to the support of the hypothesis (by material objects), and only secondarily to the material objects themselves as evidence. Thus, insofar as "support" is always singular, "evidence" is always singular. The material objects are "evidence", i.e. the material objects are "empirical support for a particular hypothesis". I am new to the whole concept of interviewing people and reporting on Wikinews and have recently conducted two related interviews with people at the centre of MPAA launches seven lawsuits against torrent, ed2k and usenet sites.
