Welcome[edit]

Chiacomo/Archive 1, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! → CGorman (Talk) 16:52, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

hello[edit]

Thanks for the source for the collision article - very helpful! Did you know that after that, it was nearly ready to be published? All it needed was for the 'dateline' to be removed (we don't use them unless it's original reporting) and the date to be added - see the 'how to write an article' link above for more info. Don't take this as me saying 'do more work!', I'm just trying to encourage people to take a more active role if they want to :-) Dan100 (Talk) 10:02, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Audio Wikinews[edit]

Great job on your first release at Audio Wikinews! I just listened to your news brief and it sounds really great, very relaxed. Congratulations, hopefully we'll see more releases from you in the future! --Mrmiscellanious 01:24, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You guys are both going on WikiNews Network in 15 minutes. Meet me in IRC. NGerda 01:29, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Mr. Misc for your nice comments and thank NGerda for all your help. --Chiacomo 15:38, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello. The Audio Wikinews is really a good thing. But could you - please - talk a bit more slowly. I'm not a native English speaker and even if I don't have problems to follow CNN speakers or others, it's really, really hard for me to understand what is said at Wikinews.

Of course! It's a toss-up really whether it's easier for me to talk quickly or slowly. Thanks for the comment. --Chiacomo 15:04, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Edit count[edit]

Don't abstain from voting just because you have a low edit count! We greatly appreciate your opinions, and I would hate to not see your votes anymore. I don't care how many edits a user has, just that they care about Wikinews, and you do. NGerda 07:07, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

Bush/Iran[edit]

Hi, I think you need to have a look at Wikinews:Cite sources and Wikinews:Original reporting. Basically, if we can't fully validate a story, it doesn't run. We currently have a reasonably good reputation - we don't want to become known as being a rumour mill full of untrue stories! Dan100 (Talk) 22:21, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I must have mis-read your comments, sorry!
Yes, anything without good notes shouldn't run. If you see that happening, it's probably because we've slipped up, so don't hesistate to put {{sources}} on such stories and de-list them! Dan100 (Talk) 10:27, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

AutisticPsycho[edit]

Hi, there's a debate on his banning on the Water cooler under Policy. Could you drop by? Dan100 (Talk) 08:39, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Re: Vacation[edit]

LOL! I hope the boss doesn't yell at me for taking a vacation :). Hopefully I will find something to write about while gone, perhaps a few sports articles. I'll have plenty of time to do so. --Mrmiscellanious 20:05, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Publishing[edit]

No, no, drop it straight in! It's how CGorman and I have been doing it for ages, others too probably Dan100 (Talk) 15:29, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

PS thank you for the mail. I'm hoping it's over with for now. Dan100 (Talk) 15:30, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

thanks[edit]

I had the article saved and I just wanted to finish it up today to see if there was any other news. I shouldn't have put it in developing stories and then just left it there unfinished. Anonymouswriter24 (Talk) 12:25 23 Jun 2005

Scenario for impeachment of Lula raised in Brazil[edit]

I think that there is a problem at the Main page:

Though unsubstantiated, the accusations involve alleged information about bribes given to Brazilian deputies.

Maybe is just my bad understanding of English, however I would apreciate if you check it.

The problem here is that:

  • Deputy Roberto Jefferson told he has no proofs
  • The Workers Party say that Jefferson has no proofs
  • Other witnesses confirms some of the Jefferson's allegations:two former ministers, a governor, at least two deputies. A newspaper published the same story of Jefferson a year ago. A secretary, a Post Office employee and bank account extracts confirms what Jefferson said.
  • Roberto Jefferson was questioned during 7 hours by Congressmen (including Congressmen from the Workers Party). The interrogation could be watched by television and internet by the TV of Congress. He never entered in contradiction during his testimony. Besides that, Roberto Jefferson was questioned by the Federal Police.

Did you see what I mean? Although Jefferson and the Workers Party say that there are no proofs, there are a lot of evidences and the story seems very logical.

Besides that, Roberto Jefferson is about just the Vote-for-cash scandal. This is not the only scandal envolving the government and the Workers Party. You can say that Roberto Jefferson just put the fire or that he threw the garbage in the fan. --Carlosar 29 June 2005 11:43 (UTC)

Categories[edit]

I will do that, and I appreciate your note. If the basis for organizing cats isnt "logical" then there are going to be some serious problems as articles increase and the rate of production increases. I would even say that the growth rate (speed, efficiency) has been hampered by a lack of basic logic in the way things are organized.

Not that I dislike the idea of conglomerating "politics and conflicts," but I think it was appropriate only for when WN was new, and didnt have that much to sort. Certainly, on wikipedia we have different uses for the cat scheme - the front page "browser" categories for example. I suspect thats what thats about, but that doesnt replace the need to be categorical, because that helps us not only read stories, but know whats been written and thus helps people write them. -Stevertigo 29 June 2005 16:55 (UTC)

Audio Wikinews[edit]

I've overhauled it, can you tell me what you think? Dan100 (Talk) 5 July 2005 13:02 (UTC)

Adminship[edit]

I've nominated you for adminship. Basically, we can't have too many people who can block and quickly rv vandals, but of course people with those powers needed to be trustworthy, so I'm nominating you. Hope you'll accept! Dan100 (Talk) 8 July 2005 17:03 (UTC)

That's not worked out as I'd planned. I don't wish to say too much about some of the responses. The best course of action would probably be to wait another month. I hope you are not discouraged though - stick with it! Dan100 (Talk) 16:22, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

Dan, you may want to make sure this is what he wants, first. Hi Chiacomo! -- NGerda 16:37, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Chia accepted, so - ? Dan100 (Talk) 10:44, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

For you help getting my signature working. --RossKoepkeTalk 23:52, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

You're very welcome! Very nice sig. --Chiacomo (talk) 00:19, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

Move protection[edit]

In the light of yesterday, I've taken the liberty of move-protecting your user pages. Just tell me if you don't want it. Dan100 (Talk) 10:44, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

Admin status granted[edit]

Congratulations, you have just been made a sysop! You have volunteered for boring housekeeping activities which normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops basically can't do anything: They cannot delete pages arbitarily (only obvious junk like "jklasdfl,öasdf JOSH IS GAY"), they cannot protect pages in an edit war they are involved in, they cannot ban users except in cases of obvious vandalism or excessive edit warring (24-hour "cool down" ban). What they can do is delete junk as it appears, ban vandals, remove pages that have been listed on Deletion requests for more than a week, protect pages when asked to by other members, and help keep the few protected pages there are up to date.

Note that almost everything you can do can be undone, so don't be too worried about making mistakes. You will find more information on Wikinews:Administrators, please take a look before experimenting with your new powers. Drop me a message if there are any questions or if you want to stop being a sysop (could it be?). Have fun!--Eloquence 06:04, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

DPLs[edit]

Thank you for what you did, but nothing's appearing now :( Also the Quaker stories shouldn't be appearing on the main page as they have a different category, if that's something you can help with too. Oh dear... ClareWhite 08:21, 22 July 2005 (UTC) PS Congrats on the adminship!

Doing deletion[edit]

Chia, if you have a look near the top of WN:DR you'll see a link to the "deletion archives". Rather than just removing the section of a finished deletion debate, could you cut it and paste into the right archive? Ta Dan100 (Talk) 08:26, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the note -- I was actually about to (page still open in another tab) when I looked at Clare's little problem... --Chiacomo (talk) 08:28, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Audio shortcut[edit]

I actually set up wn:a a while back, but forgot to tell anyone :-). WN:AW is probably more memorable though. Dan100 (Talk) 08:10, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

I probably should have checked "What links here" before creating it, but... I too like WN:AW better -- right now, WN:A might better be pointed to Wikinews:Administrators. --Chiacomo (talk) 14:36, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the Copyedit[edit]

  • Nice to be working with you :)

--Noisecontrol 05:11, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

Thank you![edit]

Thank you Chiacomo! I just wish I could be more active at the moment - i'll be back at full speed in September hopefully. → CGorman (Talk) 17:12, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

Please stop the mean comments[edit]

I really resent your comments about my user name. I like the NPOV concept and that is what I am all about, and I take it as a personal attack when you attack the name I so carefully chose. How would you like it if people attacked your user name? NPOV 00:05, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

I am not attacking your username, I'm simply asking that you change it as it may be confusing to other editors -- in that they may believe you are an official enforcer of the NPOV policy. Again, please select another username. --Chiacomo (talk) 00:08, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
By the way, I resent the slur on my talk page related to what you think I may have run into on Wikipedia. It's not true as far as I know and I only started using this name there and here today; so I'd appreciate an apology for that transparent effort to make me look like a troublemaker and I don't appreciate you "checking up on me" for no good reason. NPOV 00:33, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

Please quote the Wikinews User name rule I am breaking[edit]

Please tell me where I can find the wikinews rules regarding usernames and identify the one you, as an administrator, think I am breaching. Thank you. NPOV 00:27, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

You are potentially impersonating an official enforcer of the NPOV policy -- your username may be confusing to other users. This is quite simply really -- you need only select another username. --Chiacomo (talk) 00:37, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
That makes no sense to me unless there is an official enforcer with the title NPOV....I simply like the concept and name; please don't read anything else into it that's not there. 67.71.122.133 00:54, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

I'm not trying to read anything into it -- the username "NPOV" might be confusing to new (or even old) editors who could believe you are an official enforcer of the NPOV policy. Again, please choose another user name. --Chiacomo (talk) 00:55, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

Where is this heading?[edit]

Are you threatening me with some sort of suspension? blocking? Please advise on what basis and what my options are right now to deal with what I see as non-appropriate behaviour by yourself. I am new here and am at a disadvantage.I simply like the concept and name and please,as an administrator, please give me an official reference to the rule my name infringes upon in your opinion. It is not constructive to just tell me to change it because you think someone might misinterpret it. NPOV 01:06, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

I'm not threatening you, I'm simply asking you to choose another username. Username policy can be found at Wikinews:Username. --Chiacomo (talk) 01:03, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
"Don't create user names that are offensive or attempt impersonate another user" is what it says. Since your insistence that I change my name was so inappropriate, I am now insisting that you change your user name. Someone may think it's a slur upon people of Chinese origin. NPOV 01:11, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but my username comes from a Danny Kaye movie from Europe.... and is a family name no less. What is the relation to China? I've never found a link to China but it might be helpful in my genealogical research. --Chiacomo (talk) 01:13, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
This award is presented to Wikinews reporters upon their 11th published news article.

Congrats.. a little late, but still. ;-) -- Davodd | Talk 05:51, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

About Andrewbot[edit]

NGerda noticed Andrewbot, so he will probably do something about it ASAP. Andrew pmk 01:55, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

  • Done. I thought there was a page for it on Wikinews itself. I couldn't find it. Andrew pmk 02:06, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Review[edit]

Hi, can I get you to review my first article before I publish it? http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Utah_dance_party_broken_up_by_police --Static 05:15, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for that, I have made the changes you suggested and added the Publish tag but it still shows up in developing stories.. does someone need to approve it first? --Static 06:03, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

Scratch that.. is fine now.. thank you for your help :) --Static 06:04, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

Welcome mat[edit]

Thanks for the greetings, Chiacomo! I'm actually w:User:Ardonik, operating under the cloak of anonymity since I haven't registered an account 'round these parts yet. (I should one of these days, though; I read the RSS feed every day and this project has become my daily source of news.)

I can't remember the last time someone rolled out a welcome mat for an anonymous user on En.  :-) --69.236.29.49 05:08, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

deletion query[edit]

what was your reason for the deletion of enistein gone

It appeared to have no news content, contained an email address "for more information" and referenced a web search. Decidedly not news. If you are the creator of this "article", you might consider reviewing the content guidelines and actually writing a story and citing sources. --Chiacomo (talk) 19:12, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

RE oil in alberta spill...[edit]

"Why it took Canadian National Railway 3 days to report to residents that there were toxins spilled is a mystery, especially when the Conductor on each train carrys with him documents outlining what each car contains, and lists all w:toxins or hazardous materials on the train. And at any CN Terminal, a clerk with access to CN's Intranet can get that information in minutes."

Sorry you thought you would take this info out. I am a CN employee, and I think while the investigation is on about CN not reporting toxic spills that people need as much eduction as possible. There was a spill 2-3 days later in BC, that polluted a river near Sqamish. I thought this site was here to help with education. Take care.

Re: IRC[edit]

Hey, having a few connection problems with IRC (I don't think my PM responses got to you), but I have formed a response to my sudden "trial" of departion.

A user which I looked up to ever since my existance on Wikimedia wikis left a message on one of my talk pages with the message simply stating a large amount of disgust, disappointment and inappropriate expression based on my edits. As a regular here, I know I'm not going to have a good relationship with some of the users - however this one, from one of my mentors/idols, really made me think about my contributions to this project. In short, I want to self-evaluate myself for a week to decide if I really am promoting this project to high standards, or weighing it down.

For this reason, I have contemplated departing Wikinews if a positive evaluation isn't recieved from my edits. There's no reason to stay at a place where some regular users cannot work together - especially on a collaboration-essential website like Wikinews. --Mrmiscellanious 23:41, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

News Contest[edit]

Help ![edit]

Note to other English-language judges: I feel I am doing a disproportionate amount of the judging of English-language articles. Ideally, I would like to see all judges render an opinion on all articles in their language. I will not be doing any judging today, so could especially use some help now. Also, please respond to the issues I have raised on previous dates in the Judge's Forum:

WikipediaMention templatees[edit]

Hi there; I think it's more standard to have an italicized mention, in smaller font, at the end of na aricle noting conflicts of interest.... than a bordered centered caveat at the start. But good idea! Sj 05:06, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

Whoops, I should have looked more carefully. ok, you can put the other template back; I hadn't realized it was already in use. When I say 'standard' I mean 'compared to print publications I read'... Sj 05:29, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

No problem, certainly. While checking, I found the list of "General" templates page which describes the usage. --Chiacomo (talk) 05:33, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
