Print edition question

Isn't it strange to licence the print edition under cc-by-sa-2.5 with all that GFDL content in there? I think it's kinda strange, seeing that I'm telling other that they can't copy things from Wikinews... Sorry about the delay. I missed the new message indicator for your question in the archiving. (thanks by the way for that). The print edition is not under the cc-by-sa-2.5. Parts of it are CC-BY and GFDL, but the overall work has no specific license (I release whatever bit of it that does not use another license that I have a claim to into the public domain). The print edition has for a long time been treated as an exception to the WN Image policy, so it may be time to add it to the offical policy :) --Cspurrier 19:53, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

bot, archive template

I've noticed that when your bot puts the archive template into old stories, it add a leading space, which trigger mediawiki to insert a pre tag (example: Taizé ecumenical community founder Frère Roger assassinated ) I don't think this is a desired result. Hi, I got back home a few hours ago from a social visit with old friends in Baltimore. A half inch of snow there in the city by noon, but it changed to rain crossing southbound through Washington, D.C. Good chances of freezing rain tonight in northern, but not southern, Virginia.

My wife Pat is warm to the idea my recieving accrediitation. I have in the past e-mailed my Dad some stories where I was particularly active. His response, ("is this blogging?", meant I had some explaining to do :), was ultimately that I should keep at it.

My thoughts are that news is something I share gladly. If I ever did write anything for pay, it would probably be for a special interest monthly magazine, Field and Stream or American Heritage for example.

Print Edition - Sports Page

Print edition templates

I modified some of the templates you use on the Print Editions. The main change I wanted to make was to change categorization from Category:2007 and Category:April to instead use the full date (Category:April 27, 2007). The second was changing the License to a template, and using that template in place of the full license text.

Problem with thenewswiki

Would also like to add a few comments about this. Firstly i would like to say it's a really good idea and i think it will be good for Wikinews and am willing to help if you need it. However i also have a few comments (not it any order - just as they come to mind)

• If i get fat fingers and publish copy something that i shouldnt can it be uncopied (is this done by the removeal of the pub tag here?)
• Think the pages need spicing up a little bit - at the min are a bit "simple" to me compared to other news sources (also the text really annoys me personally so could this be changed??)
• Also read this on the google news website which details the need for three or more numbers in the url of the article to allow google news crawlers to work (perhaps the appending of numbers to the newswiki url which remains the same ie the wikinews url + 1234??)

deleting of an account

Hi, Cspurrier. I have a following problem. In the last days I was examining the pages of en.wikipedia, where I have found some hints in the articles of Anna Halman (now deleted) on the arbitration w:Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration#Zacheus-jkb. In this case there are named some edits of the user Zacheus, who was or still is named by his origin name on Meta; but as far as I can see, you deleted his user pages - see [2], after he obviously declared he is leaving the project. So, as you can see from the arbitration page, he did not leave the project - he has approximately three aqccounts on en.wiki, stil editing on meta [3] (where he was blocked for personal attacks recently), he is editing on Slovak Wikipedia etc. The user account on Meta should be therefore renewed, I think, and a notice to the arbitration case should be made. Automating the print edition

Craig, I was wondering whether you've given any thought to automating the print edition, or if indeed any part of the print editions right now are automated. I have been looking at Scribus, recently -- the open-source desktop publishing software -- and it has a somewhat yucky but manageable XML file format. Even OpenOffice's format is possible to generate automatically. If we can get some parts automated, and especially if we can get it automated so that it takes place without the application itself, we could turn the automation into a server-side process and eventually into a MediaWiki extension. I have put a lot of thought into how it could be auto generated. Th big problem is there are a lot of special cases in our articles that are easy to catch by a human but hard for a program (such as striping out most of the templates). Last Wednesday, I flew down to Miami (with a couple of Wikimedia office people) to talk with the Knight Foundation about a proposal I submitted to them in April. It will take some advanced regexs to strip things or a clever wikitext parser. The actual generation of PDFs or ODTs should be fairly easy. Obtaining mugshots

A photo of the accused murderers was recently removed due to questionable copyright information. Fortunately criminal mug shots are public domain and can be uploaded to Wikipedia. The only problem is I won't be able to obtain mug shots of the accused murderers' because I lack a reporters credential. Another wiki editor referred me to WikiNews and suggested I ask an accredited member for assistance in obtaining mugshots

The images in question can be found on this commercial news site, though they can't be copied due to copyright laws.

Portal:Football

I registered today because I saw that Portal:Football was very out of date. I have written a few articles so far today and will do every day to keep this updated. I was thinking of an idea though but I wanted to ask a sysop first.

Could we 'employ' users to be football writers for their team. So if this goes ahead there would be a group of users per team who will write up the latest news and match reports for Wikinews. The team links would be Portal:Football/LeagueName/ClubName. So for Celtic it'd be Portal:Football/SPL/Celtic. If you go to Portal:Football you will see that the fixture list has been updated, the featured results has been updated and that I am going to start a major revamp of Portal:Football. I am going to ask Dark Squall to help me as most of his contributions are football related topics.

print editon

I´m sorry to bother you with this (as I´m certain I´m not the only person to hae done so since you´ve begun doing the print editions), but I have a request regarding the print editin (for which you are nominally responsible if I saw correctly). I am going to an event in germany for young journalists (and those that want to become one), and I thought this would be a great opportunity to advertise wikinews. If possible I will certainly be distributing some printed german editions. However the english editon is far more substantial, and has some very good original reporting (the republican candidate interview for example :D ), so an up to date english version would be very nice. I´m leaving tommorow and the event lasts till sunday, so thursday, friday or saturday would be realy good. The wednesdy editon is nice as wel of course, but it is of course, yesterdays news tomorrow ... I´d gladly set up the editon myself, but I must admit, that I think I´d need an awfully long time to work out how you´ve set up the pages (although I might have a closer look tommorow. nyhow, many kind regards, Sean Heron 23:04, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Username Request

Hello Craig, This is b:User:Whiteknight from en.wikibooks. I'm interested in creating an account, "User:Whiteknight". This account does not currently exist, but when i try to register it, i get the error that my name is too similar to User:White Knight. That user was created in January, has had zero edits, and no log entries. Can you do me a favor and create the account for me? I will also be around on IRC late tonight and tomorrow, if you want to talk to me there about it.

Paid for print edition

I've raised a suggestion on the Water Cooler about doing a weekly print edition that is, whilst Wikinews' grab-bag of content, sponsored by advertising so people get the cost of printing and distribution covered. As far as I can tell this is allowed under the license, just going to be something challenging to organise.

Please add your thoughts on the idea. Do we have a chance of getting subsidised enough that people can afford to print 50-100 copies and stuff them through letterboxes? --Brian McNeil / ^talk 13:58, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Auto-distributed print edition

Since you manage the print edition, you're the person to ask... Can you request a mailing list for it and distribute every new issue to the list? Apparently Commons does picture of the day and WP article of the day. MrM used to run the feed for it, which seems empty now ( http://webpages.charter.net/mrmiscellanious/wnpe/ ) his audio wikinews feed is also empty. #Wikibooks

Somebody said that you have the ability to grants ops on #Wikibooks. It's certainly not a pressing matter, but I think that at least one "regular" there should probably have ops, just in case. I'm certainly there often, but there are others who are there even more then I am. Again, it's not an urgent matter, but I would hate to have a big problem in there and not have anybody available to help.

Wiki to PDF and the Print Edition

Do you think the wiki to print/PDF stuff that is being beta tested should be looked at for the print edition? I get the impression that with the right sort of setup on the toolserver we could move the print edition on to doing articles with images.

I'd also really like to see the iTunes 'podcast' of the Print Edition restarted. I can get WalterBE to list this in Wikizine quite easily. --Brian McNeil / ^talk 10:06, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

The discussion on Wikimania 2008 has been moved to WN:WM2008's talk page and the project page started up for collaboration on what Wikinews is going to do to have a notable presence at the conference. I understand you are attending and would value your input on what material you intend to take to the conference and how, as an attendee, this will help Wikinews. As you'll see if you look on the above page I have written an introduction that could be used for a panel on migrating people from Wikipedia to Wikinews. My ideal is to have a team of four or five wikinewsies at the event with three or four on the panel and one in the audience doing a report on that event.

I've put my proposal onto the Wikimania site (which is horrid to navigate) - it is proposal 18, if I can get you signed up to that and working with a few of the rest of us I believe we can put forward a strong bid for Wikinews having a noticeable presence, reporting on a great deal of the events and keynote speeches as well as running a workshop or two getting people started on Wikinews. I think with the NewsWire bot in the #wikinews channel there is scope to do a "getting started workshop where people work off wire reports and other sources to do synthesis-style articles and get used to how an article is formatted, checked, and eventually published. I believe this is a chance to show people who may only know Wikipedia that Wikinews still has the "undiscovered country" feel and you can almost always start a new article where you are the main contributor.
