Change Username Request

Hi, I have a change username request. --Kgargar 02:32, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

There's another one of these up at the moment. --Brian McNeil / talk 00:10, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Re:Renaming

I've thought about it, but I've decided to keep my old username- since people have got used to it. Thanks for offering though, I'll let you know if I change my mind. Zeest(Talk)(Newpages) 04:41, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

PS- I think it's better to just let Neutralizer be, blanking his talk may just tick him off (we all know what might happen then). I'll leave it to your judgement though.

Help Out

I'd love to help out with the Wikinews Print Edition. Just reply telling how I could help. Mikeb423 10:55, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer, the thing I need the most is help getting issues out when I am away. If you are willing to do this let me know and I can show you how to create the print edition.--Cspurrier 19:57, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Print edition question

Isn't it strange to licence the print edition under cc-by-sa-2.5 with all that GFDL content in there? I think it's kinda strange, seeing that I'm telling other that they can't copy things from Wikinews... I think it would be best to leave all that stuff out of there, no?--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 11:09, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Could you please respond?--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 19:37, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry about the delay. I missed the new message indicator for your question in the archiving. (thanks by the way for that). The print edition is not under the cc-by-sa-2.5. Parts of it are CC-BY and GFDL, but the overall work has no specific license (I release whatever bit of it that does not use another license that I have a claim to into the public domain). The print edition has for a long time been treated as an exception to the WN Image policy, so it may be time to add it to the offical policy :) --Cspurrier 19:53, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

bot, archive template

I've noticed that when your bot puts the archive template into old stories, it add a leading space, which trigger mediawiki to insert a pre tag (example: Taizé ecumenical community founder Frère Roger assassinated ) I don't think this is a desired result. Happy editing. Bawolff 07:56, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
I agree that is bad, before the next run of the bot I will make sure it does not do that. --Cspurrier 19:36, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

My User ID = 1767 Thank you, Cspurrier, for seeing to this for Wikinews.

Hi, I got back home a few hours ago from a social visit with old friends in Baltimore. A half inch of snow there in the city by noon, but it changed to rain crossing southbound through Washington, D.C. Good chances of freezing rain tonight in northern, but not southern, Virginia.

My wife Pat is warm to the idea my recieving accrediitation. I have in the past e-mailed my Dad some stories where I was particularly active. His response, ("is this blogging?", meant I had some explaining to do :), was ultimately that I should keep at it.

My thoughts are that news is something I share gladly. If I ever did write anything for pay, it would probably be for a special interest monthly magazine, Field and Stream or American Heritage for example.

Lastly, I thought you made an important point in this water cooler E-mail discussion. I will probably be commenting sometime soon, as it's been on my mind. Best regards -Edbrown05 23:45, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Print Edition - Sports Page

Hey there mate, i just have a suggestion for the print edition. Theres alot of sports stories being published right now, and i was thinking you might put them to end the of the print edition, and even give them a Sports Page title bar or something. This is just a suggestion, and you do a great job on the PE's, thanks—Dark Squall 23:41, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

I actually agree with Dark Squall here, I think having a sports section - where we have enough coverage - would be a great addition to the print edition. --Brian McNeil / talk 23:59, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Categorisation of print edition.

I just looked in Category:2007, the print edition looks a bit messy in there. How about having a sub-cat 2007 Print Editions and further breaking that down to January 2007 Print Ed. etc.? --Brian McNeil / talk 21:21, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Print edition templates

I modified some of the templates you use on the Print Editions. The main change I wanted to make was to change categorization from Category:2007 and Category:April to instead use the full date (Category:April 27, 2007). The second was changing the License to a template, and using that template in place of the full license text.

Anyways, just letting you know about this. :) —Zachary talk 03:08, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Would also like to add a few comments about this. Firstly i would like to say it's a really good idea and i think it will be good for Wikinews and am willing to help if you need it. However i also have a few comments (not it any order - just as they come to mind)
  • If i get fat fingers and publish copy something that i shouldnt can it be uncopied (is this done by the removeal of the pub tag here?)
  • Think the pages need spicing up a little bit - at the min are a bit "simple" to me compared to other news sources (also the text really annoys me personally so could this be changed??)
  • Also read this on the google news website which details the need for three or more numbers in the url of the article to allow google news crawlers to work (perhaps the appending of numbers to the newswiki url which remains the same ie the wikinews url + 1234??)

Again i dont mean to be negative but these are some of the things that came to mind. All the best --MarkTalk 21:35, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

1, will be added ASAP. 2, the pages are very dull, I was waiting till people had polayed with it some till I spent the time to work on the look, if you have any ideas let me know. 3, I will added the stroies internal id to the urls, looks like a silly requirement, but I am sure Google has their reasons :) --Cspurrier 02:28, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

deleting of an account

Hi, Cspurrier. I have a following problem. In the last days I was examining the pages of en.wikipedia, where I have found some hints in the articles of Anna Halman (now deleted) on the arbitration w:Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration#Zacheus-jkb. In this case there are named some edits of the user Zacheus, who was or still is named by his origin name on Meta; but as far as I can see, you deleted his user pages - see [2], after he obviously declared he is leaving the project. So, as you can see from the arbitration page, he did not leave the project - he has approximately three aqccounts on en.wiki, stil editing on meta [3] (where he was blocked for personal attacks recently), he is editing on Slovak Wikipedia etc. The user account on Meta should be therefore renewed, I think, and a notice to the arbitration case should be made. OK, this is just a hint for you. Thx, Dooronron 19:05, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

TheNewsWiki

Hi Craig,

I like very much what you've done with the site, the headlines are looking good!

Have you sent an email to Google News yet? After DragonFire mail them, the Wikinewsreports blog got included, so I was thinking that the site might stand a good chance, especially if you explain to them how it works. Maybe you could copy part of the Wikinews:Community Mirror page to an "about" section of the mirror?

--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 23:07, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments, I used the Google submit thing to request it, so we will find out soon I hope. --Cspurrier 22:28, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Automating the print edition

Craig, I was wondering whether you've given any thought to automating the print edition, or if indeed any part of the print editions right now are automated. I have been looking at Scribus, recently -- the open-source desktop publishing software -- and it has a somewhat yucky but manageable XML file format. Even OpenOffice's format is possible to generate automatically. If we can get some parts automated, and especially if we can get it automated so that it takes place without the application itself, we could turn the automation into a server-side process and eventually into a MediaWiki extension. Let me know what you think. -- IlyaHaykinson 20:24, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

I have put a lot of thought into how it could be auto generated. Th big problem is there are a lot of special cases in our articles that are easy to catch by a human but hard for a program (such as striping out most of the templates). I have had more automation for it on my todo list for a long time, maybe in late summer I will have some time to work on it.--Cspurrier 22:32, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
If you don't mind, I'd like to hear what you think it would take to automate it successfully. There is an opportunity for us to potentially be able to afford some outside development efforts to get this done, and so I'd like to understand what's involved so that I can estimate the effort, and think about potential costs of such a project if done by an outsider. -- IlyaHaykinson 06:17, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
The money coming from? -Edbrown05 06:34, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Last Wednesday, I flew down to Miami (with a couple of Wikimedia office people) to talk with the Knight Foundation about a proposal I submitted to them in April. I am planning to post something on the water cooler about the results of that discussion, but the proposal may include some software development funding (not just for Wikinews, though). -- IlyaHaykinson 06:51, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
It will take some advanced regexs to strip things or a clever wikitext parser. The actual generation of PDFs or ODTs should be fairly easy. If you are able to get funding for it, I would be able to move it up much higher on my todo list. Paid jobs are the reason it has not been done yet :).--Cspurrier 22:44, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

TheNewsWiki

I suggest that we make the 3 leads automated on theNewswiki, they are the worst to update as they change quite often. If possible, would the script be able to check the leads, say each half an hour, and update them if necessary? Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 21:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Technically doable, but would be a problem with google and manual review --Cspurrier 22:46, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Print Edition suggestion

Per the lengthy comment on the Water Cooler, I'd like to suggest an "in development" section on the print edition (if there's room). Basically list all the titles of non-disputed stories in development and invite people to visit the site and turn them into the news for tomorrow's edition. Thoughts? --Brian McNeil / talk 09:21, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to suggest that you give access to 1 or 2 trusted users with webdesign capabilities to help you speed up the progress to turn TheNewsWiki into a complete news site, like BrianMc is doing for http://www.wikinewsie.org . Maybe we can think about merging the two sites, putting your script under that domain name?

--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 12:52, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi again,

Obtaining mugshots

Hello,

I help maintain the following article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Channon_Christian_and_Christopher_Newsom

A photo of the accused murderers was recently removed due to questionable copyright information. Fortunately criminal mug shots are public domain and can be uploaded to Wikipedia. The only problem is I won't be able to obtain mug shots of the accused murderers' because I lack a reporters credential. Another wiki editor referred me to WikiNews and suggested I ask an accredited member for assistance in obtaining mugshots

The images in question can be found on this commercial news site, though they can't be copied due to copyright laws.

http://www.volunteertv.com/special/headlines/5686076.html

Would you be willing to contact the Knox County Sherriff's office to obtain these mugshots?

http://www.knoxsheriff.org/

It should be fairly easy for you, since you are an official WikiNews reporter. Graham Wellington 19:00, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Portal:Football

Portal:Football

I registered today because I saw that Portal:Football was very out of date. I have written a few articles so far today and will do every day to keep this updated. I was thinking of an idea though but I wanted to ask a sysop first.

Could we 'employ' users to be football writers for their team. So if this goes ahead there would be a group of users per team who will write up the latest news and match reports for Wikinews. The team links would be Portal:Football/LeagueName/ClubName. So for Celtic it'd be Portal:Football/SPL/Celtic. If you go to Portal:Football you will see that the fixture list has been updated, the featured results has been updated and that I am going to start a major revamp of Portal:Football. I am going to ask Dark Squall to help me as most of his contributions are football related topics.

Thanks. Please send your comments to me ASAP. Celticfan383 01:05, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

print editon

I´m sorry to bother you with this (as I´m certain I´m not the only person to hae done so since you´ve begun doing the print editions), but I have a request regarding the print editin (for which you are nominally responsible if I saw correctly). I am going to an event in germany for young journalists (and those that want to become one), and I thought this would be a great opportunity to advertise wikinews. If possible I will certainly be distributing some printed german editions. However the english editon is far more substantial, and has some very good original reporting (the republican candidate interview for example :D ), so an up to date english version would be very nice. I´m leaving tommorow and the event lasts till sunday, so thursday, friday or saturday would be realy good. The wednesdy editon is nice as wel of course, but it is of course, yesterdays news tomorrow ... I´d gladly set up the editon myself, but I must admit, that I think I´d need an awfully long time to work out how you´ve set up the pages (although I might have a closer look tommorow. nyhow, many kind regards, Sean Heron 23:04, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

I have noticed the print edition has not been published recently (except the December 16 edition which I created), so I am trying to publish it daily. Please let me know if there is a problem with that, and contact me on my talk page, so I know to stop publishing it. Thanks for reading it. --User:Anonymous101 17:54, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for replying. I will try to publish a daily isuue until Friday. --User:Anonymous101 14:45, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Presumably you can publish it now (please tell me if you can't so I know to start publishing it again) --User:Anonymous101 (I would prefer it if you replied via the email link) 21:44, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
I have published a basic edition for today but please ovewrite it with a full edition if you have time. Sorry, I did not have enough time to publish the full edition.--User:Anonymous101 (Talk) 11:05, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Username Request

Hello Craig, This is b:User:Whiteknight from en.wikibooks. I'm interested in creating an account, "User:Whiteknight". This account does not currently exist, but when i try to register it, i get the error that my name is too similar to User:White Knight. That user was created in January, has had zero edits, and no log entries. Can you do me a favor and create the account for me? You can email me the username and password at b:Special:Emailuser/Whiteknight. I can verify that I am the same user, if you need me to. I will also be around on IRC late tonight and tomorrow, if you want to talk to me there about it.

By the way, this same situation happened at en.wikiquote, a conflict with the same user. The bcrats there created the account for me, and it hasnt caused any problems that I am aware of. --Whiteknight Reply 14:13, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

I've done this for you as it can be done by any admin and i was around. Please see your talk page on books -ie leave a message confirming and then ill mail you the pswd. Thanks --MarkTalk to me 15:08, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
Problem Solved. Thanks! --Whiteknight 15:54, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

RSS News Feeds Summary/Full

I was looking at the archived discussions of Wikinews, and I was wondering whether the RSS feed would be updated to include the full article or at least a summary of the articles? Thanks! 71.141.91.49 08:18, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Soon I hope --Cspurrier 19:19, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Center for Digital Democracy

I spammed a couple of comments onto these folks blog. I found them after re-watching "OutFoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism". Seems they tend towards supporting blogging so I thought I should remind them wiki is an alternative for CJ. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:09, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Request

Hello Craig. When you have a moment could you please remove my admin privileges. Thanks, Jcart1534 11:59, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Okay, hold off on this for a bit, Craig. I'm going to take some time to think it over. Jcart1534 16:53, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Just a quick note to say thanks for reverting the vandalism to my user page and talk page. Regards. Adambro 12:01, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Rename requests

Hi. As you're the only bureaucrat who has edited in the last couple days, could you please take a look at Wikinews:Changing username#Current requests, where three requests for renaming are pending? Thanks, Picaroon (t) 04:11, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Sysop flag

Please remove my sysop flag. Thanks --MarkTalk to me 21:54, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

November 6 print edition

Was it an accident that 6November2007.pdf went out? I mean I understand if you are trying to get a jump on things. --SVTCobra 03:59, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

It was actually on time :). The target time/date is 2-3am UTC on the edition date. The Nov 5th one was a bit late :) --Cspurrier 02:53, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Rename requests

Hi! I saw that you recently did a rename, and was wondering if you could do the same for me please?! Have a look here: Wikinews:Changing username#Current requests Much much appreciated, Wikisoup 19:00, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

RSS feeds in Russian WikipediaWikinews

Hello! How can we make news feed at Russian WikipediaWikinews? What should we do? Thank you, Flrn 10:55, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia or Wikinews? I am currently working on a new version of the RSS feed generator. It should be done soon, a week probably. I can add it as soon as this is done. --Cspurrier 20:04, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
And will it available at all language versions of Wikinews? ('Russian Wikipedia' was error, I mean Wikinews). --Flrn 08:29, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes--Cspurrier 22:18, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

RSS feeds not updating

Hi Craig. I see above that you are working on a new RSS feed generator. I noticed that the RSS feeds are currently about 5 days old. Is this related to the work you are doing? Cheers, Jcart1534 12:12, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Fixed. I forgot to re-enable the cron entry for it. In the next few days/weeks it will be moved to the tool server and it should have fewer problems as well as become more flexible.-Cspurrier 22:07, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

I've raised a suggestion on the Water Cooler about doing a weekly print edition that is, whilst Wikinews' grab-bag of content, sponsored by advertising so people get the cost of printing and distribution covered. As far as I can tell this is allowed under the license, just going to be something challenging to organise.

Please add your thoughts on the idea. Do we have a chance of getting subsidised enough that people can afford to print 50-100 copies and stuff them through letterboxes? --Brian McNeil / talk 13:58, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Rss feed

The rss feed stopped working (last story from nov 14). Old instructions for fixing it say to tell you. Bawolff 00:51, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Fixed. I forgot to re-enable the cron entry for it. In the next few days/weeks it will be moved to the tool server and it should have fewer problems as well as become more flexible. The current version autopurges, so that step is no longer needed, but the notify me one still is :), thanks.--Cspurrier 22:08, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Toolserveraccount

Hello Cspurrier,
please send your real-name, your wikiname, your prefered login-name and the public part of your ssh-key to Zedler-admins.png. We plan to create your account soon then. --DaB. 21:12, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Auto-distributed print edition

Since you manage the print edition, you're the person to ask... Can you request a mailing list for it and distribute every new issue to the list? Apparently Commons does picture of the day and WP article of the day. We can advertise it around the other Print Ed. pages and see how many subscribers we get. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:39, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Also, what happened to the podcasting to iTunes? I only just noticed that died. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:50, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Didn't MrM use to run a mailing list or something?? Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 23:25, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
MrM used to run the feed for it, which seems empty now ( http://webpages.charter.net/mrmiscellanious/wnpe/ ) his audio wikinews feed is also empty. If we want a feed for it again, we could probably bug someone on who has a toolserver account to make something. Bawolff 00:23, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

#Wikibooks

Somebody said that you have the ability to grants ops on #Wikibooks. It's certainly not a pressing matter, but I think that at least one "regular" there should probably have ops, just in case. I'm certainly there often, but there are others who are there even more then I am. Again, it's not an urgent matter, but I would hate to have a big problem in there and not have anybody available to help.

Anyway, how are you doing? Come on in to #wikibooks and chat sometime! --71.230.33.251 23:04, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Wiki to PDF and the Print Edition

Do you think the wiki to print/PDF stuff that is being beta tested should be looked at for the print edition? I get the impression that with the right sort of setup on the toolserver we could move the print edition on to doing articles with images.

I'd also really like to see the iTunes 'podcast' of the Print Edition restarted. I can get WalterBE to list this in Wikizine quite easily. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:06, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

It would be able to do some of the work, but not all. It would require us to do all of the layout in wiki markup that may be a bit tricky. The podcast will be restarted soon, early Jan I hope. --Cspurrier 20:12, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Print Edition

Are you now able to publish the Print Edition. If not, please contact me and I will happily publish future days. --User:Anonymous101 09:16, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Print Edition (2)

Change username request

Weird, I thought I already posted this to your talkpage - I have requested a user name change, at Wikinews:Changing username. Wilhelm 10:19, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks. Is there a userbox on Wikinews that says "this user has an account on Wikipedia" or something like that? Cirt 15:26, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
    • Eh, nevermind, a simple note on my user page about it works fine. Cirt 15:57, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
I did the same thing of ths guy below, and if you have some while, see my request here. Cheers. :-) Brunoy Anastasiya Seyozhenko Messengers 02:39, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

B'crat

My vote for B'crat passed, can you give me the magic bit? I stupidly asked the stewards and was told local 'crats can do it. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:32, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Wikinews:Water_cooler/miscellaneous#Wikimania_2008

Your thoughts would be welcome. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 19:58, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

The discussion on Wikimania 2008 has been moved to WN:WM2008's talk page and the project page started up for collaboration on what Wikinews is going to do to have a notable presence at the conference. I understand you are attending and would value your input on what material you intend to take to the conference and how, as an attendee, this will help Wikinews. As you'll see if you look on the above page I have written an introduction that could be used for a panel on migrating people from Wikipedia to Wikinews. My ideal is to have a team of four or five wikinewsies at the event with three or four on the panel and one in the audience doing a report on that event.
I've put my proposal onto the Wikimania site (which is horrid to navigate) - it is proposal 18, if I can get you signed up to that and working with a few of the rest of us I believe we can put forward a strong bid for Wikinews having a noticeable presence, reporting on a great deal of the events and keynote speeches as well as running a workshop or two getting people started on Wikinews. I think with the NewsWire bot in the #wikinews channel there is scope to do a "getting started workshop where people work off wire reports and other sources to do synthesis-style articles and get used to how an article is formatted, checked, and eventually published. I believe this is a chance to show people who may only know Wikipedia that Wikinews still has the "undiscovered country" feel and you can almost always start a new article where you are the main contributor.
Thoughts? Comments? --Brian McNeil / talk 15:06, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
I am a bit swamped with work right now, but I am interested. I have some free time coming up next week that I will try to work on what we can do with Wikinews at Wikimania. --Cspurrier - (talk) 15:45, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Print Edition

First of all, I enjoy having more images in the Print Edition but when creating the Print Edition please remember to credit the image authors and say the copyright status if it is CC-BY, CC-BY-SA or GFDL. If you don't this could be considered copyright infringement. --Anonymous101 (talk · contribs) 21:21, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
