Crosswords[edit]

Hi Dysprosia, I'm lovin' your crossword! Will you make one every day? Dan100 (Talk) 20:23, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

If the demand for it is there, I'll try my hardest to. I've got one grid planned, the answers to the current and a new one should be up some time this evening. Dysprosia 06:01, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Overlap problem is easily fixed, check it out. -- Netoholic 09:45, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

In a word, perfect. I bow down to your crosswordy goodness. just a thought shouldnt it be wiki crossword (ie.hawaiin word for quick) rather than quick crossword. Or maybe wikiwikicrossword? Also how about making some of the clues wikilinks (which might help if you are stuck). just a thought. The bellman 13:33, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Dammit, I was gonna make crosswords for this site, but u got there before me. If u let me borrow ur xword templates then I can rustle up a few, and we could maybe get a little "wikinews fun" team ehind us. However, I'll probs only b able to rustle up about one or two a week. User:Wonderfool

Thanks to you both. The script and a few instructions are on my user page.
Linking the clues sort of spoils the fun of actually doing it, though? Dysprosia 00:51, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

A pleasant diversion and a technical achievement[edit]

I appreciate your impressive crossword puzzle contributions.

I added some additional comments about your puzzles to the Water cooler.

I hope you can add more topical references in future puzzles.

Regards,

DV 07:28, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Many thanks. I'll certainly try to add topicality in some of the clues in future, if need be. Dysprosia 07:44, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Front page link[edit]

You wanted a link on the front page - wish/command... Dan100 (Talk) 21:12, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks! :) Dysprosia 22:30, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Front page link - auto vs manual update[edit]

Just wondering which you prefer to use - do you change the front page link by hand when you upload a new crossword, or could it use the CURRENTDAY thingy? Dan100 (Talk) 08:08, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

CURRENTDAY would be wonderful, but I don't change the crosswords dead on UTC, so there's about a 6+ hr gap between 0h UTC and when I upload the new crossword, and having a main page redlink is a pretty bad idea. I don't know if there's a better solution :( Dysprosia 11:36, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I do! Make the crossword a day ahead of time. (So, today you'd make for the 6th and 7th, tomorrow the 8th, and so on.)
BTW: I am working on script to build a word list from a text file, so I can copy all the recent news articles to that and thus have an at least somewhat-news related crossword. Is this a good idea or a dumb one? I'm also working in php to theoretically get this to full-automation stage. - Amgine 15:24, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Wouldn't doing them 24hrs in advance mean the answers are available each day (the 'answers tomorrow' link? If it does, maybe we could just remove the link from 'answers tomorrow'. Dan100 (Talk) 15:16, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hm, I might try that...
As to computer generated crosswords - I think it's not such a great idea perhaps. A computer generated crossword is often less superior to one that is hand crafted, and that you need a sufficiently large list to make sure that you are always guaranteed intersections. For only a small pool of news articles, there'll be an even smaller pool of words, so this may be problematic.
I've tried to include some clues that are related to the day's news, but if that's still insufficient... Dysprosia 05:15, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Hmms... I've got a script which builds a 20x20 grid, but a lot of the words are mighty small to gain maximal density. From 2 days worth of news articles, I get a bit under 2000 unique words, and not much over from 3 days worth. A fair percentage are names, of course.
I think your approach is producing much better quality crosswords, so as long as you don't mind producing them, I will just keep on solving them for fun! - Amgine 06:04, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Poll on crosswords[edit]

Wikinews:Crossword poll, in case you hadn't seen it Dan100 (Talk) 15:16, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Crossword Poll: An apology[edit]

Dysprosia, I would like to apologize for starting a poll which you might easily perceive as an attack on the great work you've been doing on the crossword puzzles. I would like you to know that I've changed my vote on the poll, and changed (broadened) my mind significantly about the Wikinews goals, as a result of that poll's discussion. I've expanded the Wikinews mission statement to make it more explicit that work like yours is what Wikinews is about.

Please stay with us and keep up your awesome work, and don't mind sometimes-confused folk like me trying to stir things up unnecessarily. I would also be glad to render technical assistance should that be helpful. -- IlyaHaykinson 07:42, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

You've no need to apologize :) But thanks for changing your vote. And thanks also for your kind words!
You've also every right to have your opinions, so there's no worries about that also. And I might even take you up on your offer :)
Thanks again Dysprosia 10:49, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Crossword index[edit]

I've generated an index of 2005's crosswords, present and future, at Crosswords. The discussion page has the code, and I'm happy to see you're a Perl user. :) 170.35.224.64 15:52, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Correction, upon previewing. Yikes, I have wasted a lot of work by putting this at Crosswords/, when there was already one at Crosswords! Perhaps someone can clean up my mess, and perhaps someone will want to use my code. 170.35.224.64 15:52, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Great :) I'll try and merge the two when you have time. However, I'm going to try switching to weekly format, since at the moment, I don't think there's enough users actually doing the thing to justify me creating a new 'word daily (it takes about 1-2 hours to create each one), and that I don't think I'll get that sort of time in future. Though the listings will still be useful, of course! It will be good to reference the 'words by date. Dysprosia 11:20, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

And I was looking at possibly learning your script today...[edit]

<grin> Thanks! You do know we could use "weekly xword" instead, and use 16 as the variable? - Amgine 22:35, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, I've half-rewritten the script with autonumber, but I haven't integrated it well enough so it will be an easy task to produce! I currently have three different scripts at the moment ;) But the current one will still work.
And -- we have such a variable? Wow! Dysprosia 00:44, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Images[edit]

Hi I've added another image but I can't get the table to work correctly - can you fix it? Dan100 (Talk) 7 July 2005 10:25 (UTC)

Thanks Dan100 (Talk)

Good to see you around.[edit]

I havn't seen you around recently. Glad your back.☺☻(assuming your left which you probaly didn't, I just havn't seen your name around recently) Bawolff ☺☻ 04:06, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks :) I don't have regular internet access any more, plus, Parliament wasn't sitting, and I haven't written a crossword in a while *blush*. But things are starting to kick off again for a while, so I should be around some more ;) Dysprosia 00:26, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

VSU article[edit]

Great VSU article (Voluntary student unionism bill passes Australian House of Representatives, enters Senate)! However, I have a question about the following sentence: "The Federal Australian Labor Party Opposition, which had originally opposed the introduction of VSU, changed its policy in the support of the automatic unionism of students...". Are you saying that the Opposition changed its policy to now support automatic unionism, or are you saying that they used to support automatic unionism but no longer? It's not quite clear. Thanks! (If you reply, please do so at w:User_talk:Enochlau.) Enochlau 01:03, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

With regard to this an the other story today: I believe I've met a political junky. What a pleasure :-) Edbrown05 02:10, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'll fix the article up. Dysprosia 03:22, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Voluntary student unionism legislation passes Senate after surprise urgency motion[edit]

Dysprosia, I've said it before, but I'm going to say it again - your work covering parliament is brilliant. I can't find a single other news agency that is reporting this yet, they are all still reporting that the bill will be held over until next year. We're first, and I'll bet that no other agency covers the passing of the bill in such depth. Well done! - Borofkin 07:12, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks :) Dysprosia 03:22, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Australian Portal[edit]

Hi Dysprosia.... Just letting you know that I've comletely redone the Australian Portal - it now displays articles grouped into days, the same as on the main page, and has a lead article. We can set our own standards on the Aussie portal - for example, we could ditch the whole "develop" and "publish" stages if we wanted to, or we could create an "australia-publish" stage, that would cause the article to appear as published on the Australian Portal, but not on the Main Page. Articles are still in the main namespace, however, and still have to be NPOV. Anyway, let me know what you think on the Australian discussion page. - Borofkin 23:34, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

crossword[edit]

Hi, if it’s ok with you, I’m looking at adopting your crosswords that you were doing. Just one question regarding your script, I don’t know anything about that type of script, so is there any software (how do you run) the script. If there is some software, do you know where I could get a copy (prefer freeware). Thank you. Brian New Zealand 02:07, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The script is written in Perl. Any 'nix system will have Perl available, for Windows, try ActivePerl. However, this script only formats a crossword in text format into the wikiformat so it will look pretty on the site. This version is not so user-friendly as yet, and I need to work on a better version, but you should be able to get somewhere with what's there. Dysprosia 02:18, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, question 2: I have downloaded ActivePerl, but do you know how to install your script into it? Thanks Brian New Zealand 04:20, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't use Windows regularly, and it's been a long time since I've used ActivePerl, but you should be able to simply run perl with the script, like "perl blah.pl file1" if the script requires you to specify file1. There's poor documentation on the scripts, so if you want to really learn how to use the scripts, you may be better off learning a bit of Perl until I've rewritten the scripts... sorry about that. Dysprosia 06:36, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Original[edit]

Hey Dysprosia... I've re-inserted the tag and commented on the talk page. The parliamentary reporting that you do is important - reports on what happens in parliament that are unfiltered by any other news organisation. Wikinews needs more such reporting, so keep it up! - Borofkin 22:48, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support :) Dysprosia 11:24, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
