In a word, perfect. I bow down to your crosswordy goodness. just a thought shouldnt it be wiki crossword (ie.hawaiin word for quick) rather than quick crossword. Or maybe wikiwikicrossword? Dammit, I was gonna make crosswords for this site, but u got there before me. If u let me borrow ur xword templates then I can rustle up a few, and we could maybe get a little "wikinews fun" team ehind us. However, I'll probs only b able to rustle up about one or two a week. User:Wonderfool

Front page link - auto vs manual update

Just wondering which you prefer to use - do you change the front page link by hand when you upload a new crossword, or could it use the CURRENTDAY thingy? Dan100 (Talk) 08:08, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

CURRENTDAY would be wonderful, but I don't change the crosswords dead on UTC, so there's about a 6+ hr gap between 0h UTC and when I upload the new crossword, and having a main page redlink is a pretty bad idea. I don't know if there's a better solution :( Dysprosia 11:36, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I do! Make the crossword a day ahead of time. (So, today you'd make for the 6th and 7th, tomorrow the 8th, and so on.)

BTW: I am working on script to build a word list from a text file, so I can copy all the recent news articles to that and thus have an at least somewhat-news related crossword. Is this a good idea or a dumb one? I'm also working in php to theoretically get this to full-automation stage. - Amgine 15:24, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hm, I might try that...

As to computer generated crosswords - I think it's not such a great idea perhaps. A computer generated crossword is often less superior to one that is hand crafted, and that you need a sufficiently large list to make sure that you are always guaranteed intersections. For only a small pool of news articles, there'll be an even smaller pool of words, so this may be problematic.

Hmms... I've got a script which builds a 20x20 grid, but a lot of the words are mighty small to gain maximal density. From 2 days worth of news articles, I get a bit under 2000 unique words, and not much over from 3 days worth. A fair percentage are names, of course.

I think your approach is producing much better quality crosswords, so as long as you don't mind producing them, I will just keep on solving them for fun! - Amgine 06:04, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Dysprosia, I would like to apologize for starting a poll which you might easily perceive as an attack on the great work you've been doing on the crossword puzzles. I would like you to know that I've changed my vote on the poll, and changed (broadened) my mind significantly about the Wikinews goals, as a result of that poll's discussion. I've expanded the Wikinews mission statement to make it more explicit that work like yours is what Wikinews is about.

Great :) I'll try and merge the two when you have time. However, I'm going to try switching to weekly format, since at the moment, I don't think there's enough users actually doing the thing to justify me creating a new 'word daily (it takes about 1-2 hours to create each one), and that I don't think I'll get that sort of time in future. Well, I've half-rewritten the script with autonumber, but I haven't integrated it well enough so it will be an easy task to produce! I currently have three different scripts at the moment ;) But the current one will still work.

VSU article

Great VSU article (Voluntary student unionism bill passes Australian House of Representatives, enters Senate)! However, I have a question about the following sentence: "The Federal Australian Labor Party Opposition, which had originally opposed the introduction of VSU, changed its policy in the support of the automatic unionism of students...". Are you saying that the Opposition changed its policy to now support automatic unionism, or are you saying that they used to support automatic unionism but no longer? It's not quite clear. Thanks! Voluntary student unionism legislation passes Senate after surprise urgency motion

Dysprosia, I've said it before, but I'm going to say it again - your work covering parliament is brilliant. I can't find a single other news agency that is reporting this yet, they are all still reporting that the bill will be held over until next year. Australian Portal

Hi Dysprosia.... Just letting you know that I've comletely redone the Australian Portal - it now displays articles grouped into days, the same as on the main page, and has a lead article. We can set our own standards on the Aussie portal - for example, we could ditch the whole "develop" and "publish" stages if we wanted to, or we could create an "australia-publish" stage, that would cause the article to appear as published on the Australian Portal, but not on the Main Page. Articles are still in the main namespace, however, and still have to be NPOV. Anyway, let me know what you think on the Australian discussion page. - Borofkin 23:34, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi, if it’s ok with you, I’m looking at adopting your crosswords that you were doing. Just one question regarding your script, I don’t know anything about that type of script, so is there any software (how do you run) the script. The script is written in Perl. Any 'nix system will have Perl available, for Windows, try ActivePerl. However, this script only formats a crossword in text format into the wikiformat so it will look pretty on the site. This version is not so user-friendly as yet, and I need to work on a better version, but you should be able to get somewhere with what's there. Dysprosia 02:18, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

I don't use Windows regularly, and it's been a long time since I've used ActivePerl, but you should be able to simply run perl with the script, like "perl blah.pl file1" if the script requires you to specify file1. There's poor documentation on the scripts, so if you want to really learn how to use the scripts, you may be better off learning a bit of Perl until I've rewritten the scripts... sorry about that.
