Review

You seem to be active at the moment. Could you take a look at Philippines and US hold naval drills in South China Sea amid territorial dispute? It's been long overdue for a review. Thanks.--William S. Saturn (talk) 06:09, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but it's rather late here now and I don't think I'm alert enough to review. If it's unreviewed when I get on in the morning in around 9-10 hours, I should be able to review it. —Mikemoral♪♫ 06:12, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Hi!

Thanks and another question

How do the elections work? How many votes are needed to get elected, or is it the top x vote getters who are chosen for arbcom? Is there any place where discussions take place about the people who are running or any place where questions can be asked of them? Mattisse (talk) 14:19, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Wikinews:Arbitration Committee/2011 election/Nominations and voting. Voting takes place there and questions can be placed on the page. —Mikemoral♪♫ 00:58, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Indentification (sic)

No. I have not, but... I'm confused. The vote has been closed with less than 25 votes, so what's the point in providing it if the oversight vote failed? --Patrick M (TUFKAAP) (talk) 04:35, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

While I happily pretend I spelled it right :P, I commented before BRS closed the Oversight vote. —Mikemoral♪♫ 04:36, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews Writing contest 2013 is here. :) Please sign up to participate?

We've created the Wikinews:Writing contest 2013, which will start on April 1 and end on June 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 contest. It would be a really great time for you, as an inactive Wikinews accredited reporter, to renew your credentials by doing some original reporting or conducting interviews. People should be around to interview to prevent a backlog, and several reviewers have access to scoop to make it easier to review any original reporting you do. If you are interested in signing up, please do so on Wikinews:Writing contest 2013/entrants. There is at least one prize on offer for the winner along with the opportunity to earn some barn stars as a way of thanking you for your participation. :D --LauraHale (talk) 10:26, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that I've received this invitation a bit late and the contest is already on-going. Thanks for the invite though. —Mikemoral♪♫ 09:45, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FR/RFP

I left a note at the request. (Oh, and I'm about to add it to {{votings}}; I like that this has to be done by hand for most things, because the act of editing it is itself a way of drawing attention to the thing being registered there.)

I'm somewhat amused to note that, technically, you should have been de-sysop'd at the same time I was de-reviewering inactives in December. The only reason you weren't, afaics, was that at that time I was not yet a crat, so I couldn't do so; someone else did the de-sysopings, and for whatever reason didn't do you. Now of course, you deleted a file earlier today so you're technically no longer eligible for de-sysop under the policy. Not that I'm worried; that was one thing I didn't worry about even at the height of the fork, because although one or two non-admin reviewers did come back and abuse their privs to rubber-stamp articles (and were summarily de-reviewered for it), I always figured admins were a cut above, too mature for such antics.)

:-) --Pi zero (talk) 14:30, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It didn't really occur to me that my admin priv should have been removed until after I had deleted that page. It was somewhat funny for me to realize that. I had only seen that the page was a spam page and used the delete button that I'm rather familiar with. I'm sure though, Wikinews could always use an extra hand patrolling RC, archiving, etc. :) —Mikemoral♪♫ 20:46, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FAC

Seems to me you jumped the gun on that FAC. Only three votes? And two of them just cast in the past few hours, which makes the discussion clearly still volatile. FAC isn't a race; we leave them open a great deal longer as appropriate, and I think the community was clearly still engaged in its collective deliberations. Just saying. --Pi zero (talk) 22:36, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The FAC was open for a month and I saw no opposition to it becoming a featured article during the entire month the FAC discussion was open. Though, I must admit I did not notice that there had been two votes were cast before I closed the discussion. I did notice the newly listed candidate and it drew my attention to the then-open FAC. If you feel that the FAC should be re-opened for further discussion, then re-open it if you find it necessary. —Mikemoral♪♫ 07:04, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see no reason to re-open that particular FAC at this time; I might eventually have decided to vote for it.
We're in agreement perhaps that the recent volatility would have been a fair reason to leave it open for a while; I recall not closing one for a few more days, a while ago, because it had enough votes but someone had just added an oppose.
I maintain that the small number of votes would also be a reason to leave it open. I doubt I would ever (famous last words) promote a FAC if fewer than five people had voted. --Pi zero (talk) 11:36, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In the future, I will make sure that there was ample time for any opposition or other comments since the last votes before closing again. —Mikemoral♪♫ 22:44, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

'Django Unchained' returns to Chinese cinemas

Hi. Can you check 'Django Unchained' returns to Chinese cinemas to make sure all the sources are used? Four sources seems excessive and I do not mind checking... but if all are not used, would like the ones not used eliminated so I can do the review. --LauraHale (talk) 06:06, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look and the sources check out. The Xinhua source might be excessive since the other sources contain the same information. I made a few more changes as well. —Mikemoral♪♫ 07:10, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And on a side note, none of the sources mention the original US release date, though I think it's fine to confirm that with IMDb. The lead actors are mentioned in sources, however. —Mikemoral♪♫ 07:11, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the administrative and clean up assistance with articles that need some help that you are providing. :)

Glad to be at least somewhat of a help. :) —Mikemoral♪♫ 15:34, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Audio files

Just as a heads up, the audio files were added based on comments where Brian suggested the reporter read the lead out loud to see how it sounds. That was my contribution to that to give an idea as to exactly how that sounds. The audio files shouldn't be in any final version of the article, and can probably be deleted shortly. --LauraHale (talk) 01:17, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again

Just wanted to say thank you again for the administrative work you are doing. :) Much appreciated. :) Would love to see you writing more and would be happy to review your work. :) --LauraHale (talk) 23:14, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't quite had the time to write, soon perhaps though. Admin work requires a little less effort and goes quickly though it's sometimes tedious. :) —Mikemoral♪♫ 03:07, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions?

I wrote the article Nearly 500,000 people protest Mohammed Morsi in Egypt's cities, and I'm wondering when I should put it up for review. I know others should probably input to it, but I don't want it to get "old". I'm new here from Wikipedia. Surfer43 (talk) 03:57, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I was bold and submitted for breaking review. Surfer43 (talk) 04:07, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) You can put up the article for {{review}} if you want and a reviewer will take a look (soon hopefully) and either pass it or leave feedback and not pass it. The main concern I see now is the paragraph style. On Wikinews we generally use shorter paragraphs, often 1-2 sentences in length. A quick look at our style guide maybe be helpful. Your lead does seem to answer the 5 Ws and the H (who, what, where, when, why, and how). We use the "inverted pyramid" structure for ordering information, meaning the most important facts come first (the 5 Ws and the H), then the important details of the event, and then the less important background information. Hope that helps, and welcome to Wikinews! :) —Mikemoral♪♫ 04:08, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to fix it up. Thanks. Surfer43 (talk) 04:11, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I put it up for review after implementing what you wrote above. I think I will like it here. Thanks a lot, Surfer43 (talk) 04:31, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

He is bothering me with rubbish each edit. He is never contributing. He deletes articles comments sites here, although the article is existing. Articles under development are clean up articles. I might not write about RB Leipzig. My started articles have interest and he says that other archived articles are which from amateur clubs, university clubs or something else. He wants to rename my name here and is not rename me. My articles are written after the style such as about other proven football match reports. He is psychic unable to name reasons. A remark on archiving

Just a reminder, that we've had a 'usual practice' during slow times of keeping ten articles on the main page DPL, so as to offer a ready showcase of the sort of articles we publish — always important, and especially important in slow times. Why ten? Well, it's about the right size to perform that function. I've discussed it with others from time to time and most are amenable. BRS encouraged me to add a note about it to WN:ARCHIVE when he was neatifying that page in June 2012. --Pi zero (talk) 12:14, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ottawahitech's abandoned articles

Please do not move them. They are yet to be checked for copyvio -- moving them to user space might end up in missing out to check for copyvio.
acagastya PING ME! 09:52, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working on this one thing at a time here. —mikemoral (talk) 09:55, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Pi zero did not delete it till now so that they could check for copyvio before doing anything to it. If it is moved to user space -- they can remove the tags and we might forget to check for copyvio and end up allowing copyrighted material on Wikinews. If it is in main space, we would get to it sooner or later.
acagastya PING ME! 09:57, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's been lingering around in the mainspace long enough so it's not much difference for it to be in the userspace where we can still check the material for copyvio content sometime. —mikemoral (talk) 10:05, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Once it moves to userspace, it would be very difficult to track it.

acagastya PING ME! 09:58, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Acagastya: That situation is a bit different in that the image was going to be deleted. As it turned out, it never got deleted anyway. Since these images would be effectively identical it's probably okay, although there's something that doesn't feel quite right with changing the image postarchive regardless. It's generally best to not change any content after archiving. —mikemoral (talk) 18:39, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pi zero is yet to see those DRs, and new images are better at scaling - the mime type difference is the only difference. I asked you about IRC so that I could tell you about Ottawahitech's articles, just because the message was placed in this section.
acagastya PING ME! 18:45, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, those logos are replaced with their newer version.
acagastya PING ME! 03:50, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Similar changes have occasionally happened on Commons (thus, outside our sphere of control), and I reconciled myself to allow the replacement was, after all, not really changing anything about the basic identity of the image, so having allowed those I figured I could allow these. I do take a hard line on not replacing archived images with an image that's different in any fundamental way (such as cropping or the like), but when the only difference is something like .jpg vs .svg or such, and not a photograph, it seems as if any claim that they aren't the same image is rather abstract. --Pi zero (talk) 04:23, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

Adding file 24 hours after publication is considered substantial change. Better to add it as an external link. So I reverted it.
acagastya PING ME! 09:34, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Though I expect I'd have looked for a way to handle it without a direct revert, the point about an image versus an external link does seem cogent. --Pi zero (talk) 13:26, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You can just straight up delete junk like that. There are plenty of justifications in the drop-down menu. Hiding revisions, tagging for speedy. It just creates more work, imho. Cheers, --SVTCobra 04:00, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer

Recently remarked to acagastya that while wikis generally have the metaphor of mop-and-bucket for admin privs, we don't have a similar tradition for the review bit. I wondered about "red sharpie", which brianmc sometimes talked about in connection with review; but apparently it didn't resonate for acagastya. Too era-dependent a technology, perhaps.

At any rate, bit restored. --Pi zero (talk) 20:27, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi zero: I'd be inclined to call it the "red pen" myself. Throughout my entire education K-12 and university, red pens were used for marking things. Not so much with a sharpie marker, but the metaphor works that way too. Thanks for restoring the bit, —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 07:52, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was busy with the articles that time that I did not even realise what "red sharpie" actually was. Sharpie -- our teachers do not use it; and since I am self taught calligrapher, the first thing that comes to my mind hearing "sharpie" is lettering. Now that mikemoral said "red pen", I could picturise a "F" grade written with sharpie; it makes sense now. However, a red sharpie would still make me feel as if it is more not-ready inclined than not; and also how the current education system is a complete mess.
•–• 08:10, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Acagastya: I can specifically remember it was these kinds of pens. "Red pen" sounds corrective to me, as they were often use to mark corrections in math and science courses. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 09:02, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you mention, my teachers used those red pens too (and I owned a blue one). Though I remember they used a red pen for positive messages as well as negative ones; though positive messages were generally much shorter (same goes for Wikinews review comments, of course). That's a negative association for that metaphor, though, yes. Hm. --Pi zero (talk) 12:06, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
