Tell us about yourself[edit]

How old are you? Have you ever taken a college level political science class? Do you consider yourself a conservative or liberal? If these answers are already in the archives, forgive me.

  • This question was not meant to be an insult, there is no need to ignore it, I'm just curious about who you are. Your picture shows you as a young person, and I'd like to know more.
Sorry 'bout that. I've been pretty wrapped up in things around here, and I've gotten personally attacked by one user. I'll try getting to this within the next couple of days. -- NGerda 19:14, July 25, 2005 (UTC)
The answers to those questions are on my user page, and I am taking a college level political science class this year. -- NGerda 19:20, July 25, 2005 (UTC)
  • So, your a pacifist? Will you still be a pacifist when wahhabist islamic terrorists attack your home town and kill your friends and family because you are not a muslim and their interpretation of the koran says to kill all non-believers?
I probably shouldn't be intervening here, but dude - CHILL OUT! Um, I should probably say something enlightened here, but ah well. By the way, indivuduals from all religions have preached hatred in the past. It doesn't mean, however, that the entire religion advocates or condones what they espouse. SoLando 12:30, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What the hell do you mean CHILL OUT when this guy plays a major part in the running of wikinews. People like him will get this site forever labeled as liberal, thereby ruining it. He's a young fool who needs to be demoted and replaced by somebody with some experience in life. I care about this site, and I'm sick and tired of this guy's bullshit.
I'd also like to point out that more people have killed in Jesus' name than any other person in history. :P -- NGerda 17:59, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
And I'd like to point out that I despise organized religion in general, while acknowledging that on occasion they ALL do some very good deeds, and of course some bad deeds. I never said I was a Christian. By looking at your picture, your age, and the fact that you are a pacifist, I know your type. I lost a cousin in the world trade center, and I'd like to see you grow up and learn that life is a jungle and killing is a natural part of life. Would you be a pacifist if you came home and found a man raping your 8 year old son, or would you grab your rifle and blow his head off? You will grow up someday, and hopefully learn that pacifism is a dream for those who lack an understanding of human nature and the limits of governments and the law. Based on many of your posts, I consider you a complete idiot. People like you are keeping wikinews from being all it can be. For example, stating that Bush dropped out of college? What a moron, the man is a Harvard MBA with poor public speaking skills. Nobody makes it through the Harvard MBA cirriculum while being an idiot, regardless of political connections. Making a comment like that just shows what a young fool you are. Show some restraint and stop fucking up this site, and this is coming from a long ago graduate who HAS taken A political science class or two.
Well I'll let you continue living in your pessimistic, violent, religion-hating world, and I'll continue improving the NPOV and localism standards of Wikinews. Good day to you, sir. -- NGerda 20:52, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

" US police pursue girl over stone"[edit]

This story is perhaps worth a write-up, are you willing to cover it? I won't have time as I'll be in California (Santa Clara County) Monday 2:00 pm until Thursday 4:50 pm, perhaps we can meet up somewhere.--Eloquence 00:24, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In case you're interested, I've created a page at Wikinews:Meetup/California.--Eloquence 00:35, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to attempt to cover that story and the Disneyland story, since I live 5 minutes away from Disneyland. The meetup sounds great, but unfortunately I live over 400 miles away from the proposed meetup. Be sure to tell me how it went, and if you travel to Southern California, be sure to let me know! Best of luck to you, NGerda 03:40, July 18, 2005 (UTC)

Bo Bluxo[edit]

Took you mothafookin' long enough, jackass. What the hell ya been doing this whole time? lol, Just messin'. Thanks for taking care of him. Now I can go to bed at 4:00 AM (local EST) after dealing with this guy for an hour. --RossKoepkeTalk 07:53, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry 'bout that, Ross. I honestly didn't see the mess until right before I blocked him. Thanks for cleaning up! -- NGerda 08:04, July 18, 2005 (UTC)

Edit this page[edit]

If you'd bothered looking at the page history, you would have seen that I have already tried what you are doing. Dan100 (Talk) 16:30, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Um, I did bother looking at the page history, and you bolded the text "Edit" not "Edit this page". -- NGerda 16:31, July 18, 2005 (UTC)

I need your help[edit]

My comments on the talk page re; the story about 25,000 civilians killed in Iraq. My comments were deleted; maybe you can protect them(the comments) I feel very strongly about this. Paulrevere2005 19:25, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Protecting talk pages is not allowed, since there is no way to protect just a single part. It looks like the problem was you linked to a past revision, then some one went to reply and just clicked the edit button with out first moving to the current revision, this caused your later edit to be overwritten. --Cspurrier 19:30, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Paul, comments on talk pages are considered sacred, and deletion of comments is not permitted at Wikinews. If intentional comment deletion is found out, the user must be blocked. -- NGerda 20:30, July 19, 2005 (UTC)

Paul, thank you very much for bringing this to my attention. Please, do not hesitate to do so in the future. After carefully reviewing the circumstance, it seems evident to me that there was merely an edit conflict. The new Wiki software accidentally overwrites previous versions in an edit conflict. Happy writing, NGerda 20:38, July 19, 2005 (UTC)

I agree that posts to discussion should be left alone (sacred conveys the point). I am guilty myself of deleting previous posts I made rather than explaining them more fully, or making an attempt to explain the frame of mind I was in when posted as an excuse or apology. -Edbrown05 20:45, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Portal" namespace[edit]

Nick, it's not a question of moving pages. Creating a new namespace is only something a developer can do. Dan100 (Talk) 14:09, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thanks. How do we move the pages then? -- NGerda 16:44, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

IRC[edit]

please come onto IRC, i need to talk to you, thankyou.--Ryan524 07:00, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Portals...[edit]

I see you put in the portals using the namespace. I am still very confused as to why we need them — the Category:Portal seemed a good solution. -- IlyaHaykinson 06:08, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

Nick, you might want to try thinking about what consensus means. Go read the Water cooler. While you're doing that, you can set to work reverting your moves. Dan100 (Talk) 21:23, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Protection[edit]

Hello, thanks for the welcome. Can you unprotect Image:Breaking.png (I want to crush it)? I don't know why it's protected, considering most images on the front page aren't. 24 17:45, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OK, no problem, I'm on it! -- NGerda 17:50, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

confused[edit]

Dan blocked me for a few minutes because of 1 word(executed) in a developing story headline...the story seems to have been deleted..here is the new benign version I don't seem to be able to get into developing; Friday, July 22, 2005

An eyewitness, Mark Whitby, said;"As the man got on the train I looked at his face. He looked from left to right, but he basically looked like a cornered rabbit, like a cornered fox. He looked absolutely petrified. He sort of tripped but they were hotly pursuing him and couldn't have been more than two or three feet behind him at this time.He half-tripped, was half-pushed to the floor. The policeman nearest to me had the black automatic pistol in his left hand, he held it down to the guy and unloaded five shots into him."

Journalist Chris Martin said;"Then I heard shots. I thought it was three but someone else said five. It sounded like a silencer gun going off, and then there was blind panic, with people shouting and screaming and just running away."

Paul, I want to let you know that I was severely dissapointed when Dan100 blocked you, he acted completely outside our blocking policy. I look forward to reading your story! -- NGerda 00:40, July 23, 2005 (UTC)
I belive he acted within our blocking policy, reacreation of deleted stories is prohibited, and can be a blockable offense. I however do belive he acted outside our policy in the deletion of your story, it should have been placed on DR, if he belived it should have been deleted. --Cspurrier 00:44, 23 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
So therefore blocking someone for reviving a story that, according to you, should not have been deleted, is not within policy. -- NGerda 00:47, July 23, 2005 (UTC)
Just because someone else violated policy does not give someone else permission to violate policy. The correct thing from him to do would have been a. ask Dan about it on his talk page, b. ask on IRC, c. post about it on the water cooler, d. ask a different user such as yourself to give their opinion. --Cspurrier 00:51, 23 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps Dan should've talked about it before he deleted a story he shouldn't have. -- NGerda 00:54, July 23, 2005 (UTC)
Without a doubt Dan deleting it was done wrong and you right he should have talked about it before he deleted it, my point is that both users did the wrong thing. --Cspurrier 00:57, 23 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • It all happened pretty fast; I didn't realize it had been deleted; I thought maybe it was an edit conflict or something like that.I was working on the story and I couldn't imagine someone would intentionally delete it unilaterally. I will now try to put a more benign story back into developing. Paulrevere2005 02:18, 23 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There has been criticism of Wikipedia that it is managed by an elite (sorry, can't cite the source). I have been victim of an upload of a new story that was squashed before it had a chance to appear. I think of concensus, and then I think of unilaterialism. -Edbrown05 02:57, 23 July 2005 (UTC) --- isert missed word -Edbrown05 02:58, 23 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Portals[edit]

Because as I've told you Nick, READ THE WATERCOOLER, where you will see THREE complete objections to the change. There is no 'ratification', there is no 'consensus'. Dan100 (Talk) 07:50, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just to make it abundantly clear, as you're obviously having a little trouble with your reading:

Furthermore, seeing "Portal:" before the title is weird and potentially confusing to readers. Plus it means having to prefix that before putting (eg) United States into the search box. What's the point in that?
This is change for changes sake, and positively harms the project. It should not be done. Dan100 (Talk) 10:23, 21 July 2005 (UTC)
We can always pull up statistics by making a database query. We can have a DPL that outputs a numbered list that doesn't include things in Category:Portal. I think that the portal namespace is worse than a category for three reasons:
  1. The name of the page is confusing, "Portal:Africa" looks worse than just "Africa"
  2. Search will not automatically show portals
  3. The URLs are harder to give out. Instead of http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Africa, it's got an extra "Portal:" in there.
I think with the DPL having more functionality now, it makes little sense to have the separate namespace. -- IlyaHaykinson 13:17, July 21, 2005 (UTC)

Ilya, those are exactly my concerns. We must put our readers first (or what's the point?). There is no consensus for such a namespace. Dan100 (Talk) 16:04, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

In order to show my opinion: I agree with those opposing a seperate namespace för Portals. The little benefit of more accurate statistics doesn't respond to the cons, like simpleness of likning ([Africa] instead of [Portal:Africa|Africa]), better URL:s (as mentioned), better page header etc. The localism (making portals for every town, which I support) and "topicalism" (making portals for every topic, which I also support) could be done without the namespace. Väsk 21:50, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

And even more than that Nick, you're messing with things you simply do not understand - after your 'moves', many/all the subpages were broken. Dan100 (Talk) 08:07, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dan, it got a whole lot of support before that, and I made the switch before the opposition votes came. If a proposal is greatly supported, and the switch is made and shortly after people express opposition, it is not ok for you to override everyone else and revert all of the page moves. It should be discussed, not ridden over. -- NGerda 16:21, July 24, 2005 (UTC)

Hotline/Collaboration + WNN[edit]

Nick, I have no problem adding the WNN forwarding to the hotline. However, I think that the current way the greetings are phrased, it's completely unclear what the network is. Especially since the word "network" refers to so many things (Internet? community of people? radio? things to catch fish?). I suggest that you use a description for what it is rather than its name. -- IlyaHaykinson 01:57, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

I also added the above to Wikinews_talk:Hotline/Collaboration. -- IlyaHaykinson 02:00, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

Image FUBARing[edit]

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:122979main_launch.jpg

Due to your edit of this file, we had a lot of trouble at Wikinews because it was on the main page and in an article. There was a small edit war on the commons which WN was at the mercy of. After taking a long time to identify the problem (thinking it was just our wikicode) I had to create http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Wide122979main_launch.jpg which took some time.

While none of that's really important because it should be taken care of now, I wonder if http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:122979main_launch.jpg is still correct. ex: the source says

from [http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/122979main_launch.jpg NASA]

Which is no longer true. ----RossKoepkeTalk 20:22, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really sorry about that. I should have replaced the link. The correct link is http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/123520main_1735-lg.jpg -- NGerda 20:49, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

The night shift[edit]

What time is it in California? Do you never sleep? I knew someone who lived near Disneyland once in the less glamorous part of Orange County, she said, and she said all the teenagers hung out there getting drunk and doing what teenagers do, only in the middle of Disneyland. Always thought it would make a great alternative The OC :) Anyway, don't stay up all night, it's not good for you! ClareWhite 08:13, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

:D Hey Clare! Yeah, the Disneyland fireworks stopped quite a while ago... actually it's been hours! It's only 1:14 a.m. here, though, and I like catching up with all of you English folk.  ;) Cheerio, NGerda 08:15, July 28, 2005 (UTC)

Hehe. Well, here it's raining and there are no fireworks every night here. (unless you count the blowing up of suspicious packages...) Oh, to be in sunny California ClareWhite 08:18, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, actually it's been really hot here lately! Like, seriously, it's been melting hot! But, then again, any weather is better weather than in Mumbai right now. -- NGerda 08:23, July 28, 2005 (UTC)

bias?[edit]

"However, many editors..." - Amgine

There are far more than "2 or 3" editors who are in support of the project. See the list on the main WNN page. -- NGerda 04:53, July 30, 2005 (UTC)

I submit that two editor expressed their support for the proposal, which I agree is equally innaccurate. But if you are correcting someone for bias, you should be especially careful to avoid what appears to be equally biased statements. - Amgine

Dan100's statement was However, the one or two editors who support this wish to continue working on their proposal. When comments are made on a News section of a project, using the word "this", if I am not mistaken, refers to the project itself, which the following people have expressed their desire to work on improving and editing the project: Ryan524, NGerda, Chiacomo, MrMiscellanious, RossKoepke, Kyelewis, Dcabrilo, Ameer, zanimum. -- NGerda 05:02, July 30, 2005 (UTC)

If you cannot see how your statement might appear equally biased, based on the results of the recent vote (and on which Dan100 may have based his statement), then perhaps you might consider that your judgement on this specific matter might not be wholly objective. I stand by my initial statement; if you are correcting someone for bias you should be especially careful to avoid what appears to be biased comments. - Amgine

Deleting the image[edit]

I should have known better. I usually get on the case of others, particularly at Wikisource. I'm still trying to get a hang of what is more "fair-use" images from other news sources, and there is some stuff that is useful that can be copied, but not all of it. That is the real nasty part. In a news situation (as opposed to writing a book that is going to take months or years to complete) sometimes you get caught up in the moment trying to simply put something into the article.

Anyway, thank you for pointing out that the photo was inappropriate. I don't have any objection to having it deleted, and as I pointed out, should have known better. --Robert Horning 03:48, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, no prob at all! ;) If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to check out Wikinews:Policies and guidelines, and if you run into trouble, just give put a message here on my talk page.  :) -- NGerda 03:54, July 31, 2005 (UTC)

Queer Eyed![edit]

So Nick, how do you like your new Queer Eyeified user page! Don't thank me! Thank the fab five! ;) --TUFKAAP 04:28, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

....Ok you, can Queer eyeify my user page as revenge....

LOL! OMG!! AP, you have lit up my week! First people flat out reject WikiNews Network, then I get flat out rejected at the door at SIGGRAPH, and now my userpage is Queer-Eyed! teehehe indeed, my good friend! -- NGerda 05:48, August 2, 2005 (UTC)

Template:Block[edit]

NGerda: You have that template, which should not be in the main template space, on 13 pages which it should not be on. I strongly encourage you, again, to not use that inaccurrate and inappropriate template except if you then follow it up by removing it after the block expires. - Amgine/talk 01:09, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

You moving it to my namesace does nothing to resolve that problem, or any problem for that matter. I use it as a friendly message to blocked users who don't understand what is going on. If they care about how their talk page works, they can remove it, but most of them leave anyways, so it doesn't really matter. -- NGerda 01:34, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

There is a block message presented when blocked users attempt to edit -- that message includes a pointer both to the administrator's talk page and email as well as IRC. Perhaps that message should be edited if we feel that it provides incomplete information. I don't really care for the template. --Chiacomo (talk) 02:41, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

New WNN logo?[edit]

Developing Icon[edit]

You are replacing this image: with this one: - which is a much more confusing graphic. Can we please discuss this? -- NGerda 08:51, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

It was in process of loading the newer image. How is a wrench and screwdriver less confusing? -- Davodd | Talk 09:05, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's simple, and gets the message across: the ideal use for icons and graphics. The new one, on the other hand, is very hard to understand. -- NGerda 09:08, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
It's not simple - it looks like a baseball bat and a wrench - and what do either of the tools in the first have to do with writing? The new one is a pen and is simpler to get the point across that writing is in progress. -- Davodd | Talk 09:13, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I like the pen graphic a lot. -Edbrown05 18:13, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly I didn't realize it was a pen (nor screwdriver either). How about having a boader discussion, guys? Like on Watercooler? --Aphaia 00:17, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
