Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Signing[edit]

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikinews pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four w:tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the w:Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! Microchip08 (talk) 22:23, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A thought[edit]

If you're setting about to address the review concerns on an article that's been not-ready'd, fix it and then submit it for review. When you submit an article for review, you're saying you believe it to be ready for review/publication in that form; so don't submit it for review before you've done what you mean to do to address the concerns. Just saying. --Pi zero (talk) 01:54, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

file names[edit]

I changed the incorrect file names "Dr. Reed" to "Terri Roth" in Wikimedia Commons but the changes haven't been approved yet.Crtew (talk) 02:38, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your plan page[edit]

Hi there, I noticed that you created Username:/Plan. That's not the right place for it, so I've moved it to User:Rachristia1/Plan for you. Microchip08 (talk) 23:18, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I appreciate it. Rachristia1 (talk) 20:08, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This looks really cool. Is there any reason why work appears to have ceased? I'm looking forward to seeing it published! :) BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 17:02, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am hoping to submit the article for publication today. I am trying to use a picture of the professor provided by MIT under fair use. I've never uploaded a picture to Wikinews, so I was wondering if you could help me? I've already submitted the photo to upload, but I'm not sure what to do from here. Thanks! There are documentation concerns about the interview, raised on the article collaboration page. Three reviewers (including myself) have weighed in, last I saw. --Pi zero (talk) 13:30, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Left a comment on the other page, so let me know. Rachristia1 (talk) 13:38, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

...uploaded "File:Buongiorno.jpg" ‎(http://web.mit.edu/nse/people/faculty/buongiorno.html This is a headshot of the professor, provided by MIT. MIT has a headshot database for all their professors. I am using it under fair use.)

Could you please ask the professor to ask photographer to upload a picture of him to commons:Special:Upload directly, they usually are very collaborative on this. :)

--Gryllida 13:26, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It wouldn't be considered fair use? I can ask him, but I don't know if the professor knows the photographer/knows how to get ahold of him. He's a busy guy and I don't think he would do it. Rachristia1 (talk) 13:28, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just try to ask him, the photographer would pick a free license and usually wouldn't object. (You can tell him that if he took a picture himself then he can upload directly as well.) Gryllida 13:30, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It works as FU, but other interviewers in the past have achieved quite good results asking for freely released versions. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 13:44, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
