Belgium... considered the worst swear-word in the Galaxy[edit]

At least by Douglas Adams. :-)

I'm pretty close to Brussels, I lived in the city for a while, using it as a base to work from. From there I moved in the direction of Leuven, which as a city reminds me of when I was a student in Edinburgh. Now, whilst I studied French at school I only got good enough to manage the shopping, and most places when you start struggling the people you're speaking to use English. Out in the Flemish region, I'd say the people are more friendly than in the city - and their education system seems to do a far better job of producing multilingual people. Anyway, I'm still demonstrating that I've no particular aptitude for languages, and the local commune-run course was pretty dreadful, you need vocabulary and grammar - they gave stock phrases. I've spent too long with computers, I need a specification for the language. --Brian McNeil / talk 13:15, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Use of references[edit]

I see you've done this more than once, the use of the source template inline with a reference link. We don't do that, and there's a number of reasons I don't like the approach. Main one is not to present links or shortcuts that may be an alternative source of information before the reader has finished our article. I know it can make for easier verification of sourcing, but it encourages people to leave wikinews and not continue to read further articles. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:25, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are other source templates here, and I think proposing one for scientific papers wouldn't be a bad idea. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:27, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Wikinews:Policies and guidelines stuff covers a lot, but some things aren't documented and are conventions of usage. Getting them added into policies can end up getting labelled as "instruction creep". --Brian McNeil / talk 11:40, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Planets article[edit]

It certainly was an in-depth report. :-) What to be careful with on those sort of reports is not to be too encyclopedic. First two or three paragraphs should pretty much sum up the information in a form anyone can follow, then lay out the more technical details after. --Brian McNeil / talk 15:15, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on the Astronomers to vote on potential new planets article. Excellent work. I noticed that there haven't been any corrections made to it since it was published. Brian, above, does make a good point. Traditional media would probably have an introduction in layman's terms about how they are meeting in Prague to make these decisions. --SVTCobra 21:16, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Just wanted to say Hi, and welcome to Wikinews ( a little late now, but I was away so I couldn't say welcome ealier). I looked at your template, and it looks pretty good. I made a little bit of a change to brackets in references to databases in an attempt to improve clarity, Maybe a seperator between the database names would be good (like a comma) but I'm unsure. Other then that, I can't think of any way for it to be better . However don't expect it to be used too, too often as the journals arn't cited too too often, and when they are, users often forget about these templates and cite using the standard source template. Great work on the template. Happy editing. Bawolff ☺☻ 09:30, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see what I can do for a link from edit window. I geuss if it gets used at least once, its fullfilled its purpose, and its a good thing to have around. I'm glad you enjoyed my strange and unusual template, the reason you and everyone else proablly didn't know about it is it just recently (in the last couple of hours) came to exsist. Happy editing. 09:56, 25 August 2006 (UTC)~

wikibureaus[edit]

it might be better to talk about this on the water cooler, some of the bureaus (eg. US) are not particularly active, whereas most people do see the wc fairly regularly, atleast in my estimate. Doldrums 18:28, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

editing an article[edit]

I see you've just stuck this on a copyvio, it should be on the sub-page, and you rename that into the main namespace and ask the copyvio be deleted. At least, that's the simplest way to work it I can think of. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:42, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Thanks for the welcome. Also, I've noticed that you improved a couple of my articles. Thanks for that as well.

A court in Flanders prolonged the custody of 12 suspects on Thursday. Meanwhile, more details emerge in the case against alleged neo-Nazi group inside the Belgian army. They are accused of terrorism, weapons traffic and racism.

Most lawyers involved asked for their clients to be released, and will appeal the court's decision. One lawyer said the police was being influenced politically to make the arrests now, before the elections of October 8, and that his client was more of a "immature teenager and weapons freak". The prosecutor is calling some suspects weapons dealers, but the defence lawyers claim they are weapons collectors, and say that terrorism is out of the question.

A spokesperson for the justice department denied this formally, saying that "The weapons traffic of the suspects began to take too large proportions, so we couldn't wait any longer." She also said the army informed them that they considered it too dangerous to take the soldiers involved along on uncoming international missions (Belgium is sending troups to Lebanon).

The prime suspect and alleged leader of the group is Thomas B. The police thinks he has a neo-Nazistic ideology and was planning attacks to destabilise Belgium. Thomas B. founded a splinter group of Blood and Honour called 'Bloed, Bodem, Eer en Trouw' (Eng: Blood, Soil, Honour and Fidelity), after the British headquarters of the skinhead organisation didn't let him found an official branch in Belgium.

T.V. station VTM claimed the police tapped into phone conversations where Thomas B. was talking about killing Filip Dewinter and Dyab Abou Jahjah, two political leaders and opponents in Belgium. That way, both sides would cause an uprise and they could seize the opportunity. But the prosecutor's office has formally denied the existence of specific plans to this end.

The police has discovered numerous weapons, and a video showing a paramilitary training, not only on military grounds but also under a bridge in the city Dendermonde. The police say the tape shows how they fire guns and throw Molotov cocktails on that location.

In the political arena, Internal Affairs minister Patrick Dewael has suggested a law to forbid far right criminal organisations. The plan was applauded by some and contested by others. Earlier on Friday, the federal governement supported the proposal to give more power to the national intelligence services to fight terrorism. Minister of Defence André Flahaut suspended 11 suspects inside the army. Prime minister Guy Verhofstadt said the entire affair was "a blame for the country and the army".

Belgian justice denies Flemish TV VTM’s claims that the neo-nazi group Bloed, Bodem, Eer en Trouw (BBET), close to the Flemish branch of Blood & Honour, was projecting false flag terrorist operations (although it does accuse the group, which included soldiers, of preparing bombings to "destabilize" the country, and prolonged detention of the suspects on September 12). VTM Flemish TV declared that BBET was preparing itself to kill Filip Dewinter, one of the leaders of the far right Flemish party Vlaams Belang, and to charge the Islamist movement for the assassination. In the insuing confusion, they would have then assassinated Dyab Abou Jahjah the European Arab League.

Re:Headscarf[edit]

hi, sorry if i've stepped on a toe while replacing the image. my reasons are that the Iraqi girl's photo is that of a minor, she is identifiable, and some muslims object to being photographed. even if it is unlikely, we don't really want to get her in trouble over this. the image's description on the commons page doesn't say very much about consent either. as for the reverts, i agree with u. perhaps on another day, i might look around for a better way to handle it.  — Doldrums(talk) 02:56, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3RRs[edit]

hi, u've raised a valid point about blocks for 3RRs. i do have to say one (well, couple of) thing(s), though - the edits i was reverting were ones which had been discussed and disagreed with by a number of editors on WC, the Israel category talk page and on this article's talk page. PVJ had been on a similar revert-wars on other articles just prior to this one, insisting on going against the expressed view of every other editor involved. if i was particular about sticking to the letter of 3RR, i could've contacted any one of several other editors to do the reverting. instead, i did it myself. fwiw, i stand by my edits.  — Doldrums(talk) 12:01, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Israel[edit]

Please take a look at Category talk:Israel. I see that you recently became an admin here. Please note the following remarks, made by a fellow ADMINISTRATOR here:

 • "possibly non-existent entity"
 • "The area under consideration need not be refered to as "Israel" and may be reported as "Occupied Palestinian territories", "Land under Zionist regime""
 • "the existence of a State of Israel (commonly known as "Israel") on that piece of ground. To have a category about "Israel" would not be fair, since it implies that 1) Israel exists"
 • "Yes, I hate the US and Israel."
 • "The scourge of the Zionist regime will one day, in my humble opinion, be wiped off the earth and after its annhilation, Muslims will once again be free to live without fear of Jewish oppression."

After I responded to this, saying that this antisemitic bigot belongs in a psychiatric hospital, I was immediately attacked by two other administrators for making 'personal attacks'. Apparently, saying that I should be annihalated together with the rest of the country in which I live is just fine. Or simply denying its existence. I am quite shocked, to say the least. --Daniel575 16:49, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Racial Equality commissioner warns of racial violence in UK[edit]

Thanks very much for helping with the report - I'd value advice on the country issue. Phillips is reported as speaking of Britain and probably deliberately so as race riots are unlikely in Northern Ireland. They riot about otheer things there! Should we not use his term in the report in these circumstancs, especially as the Category makes it clear that it's UK? I'm a newbie and am floundering arond a bit - please forgive me for bothering you over such a small issue. Fentonrobb 22:39, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and another query![edit]

I really appreciate your support and encouragement - thank you.

Regarding the revitalising of stories with additional stuff as (a) it appears in the news and (b) as one explores and discovers it, I am in some confusion.

I have been 'ticked off' for adding stuff to old items instead of making a new aticle - properly so according to the rules; but when the new stuff is just a slightly new slant to the tale, it seems heavy handed to start a new piece. Unlike hard copy papers, wikinews is able to develop a story as a 'process' as it were and the way it does so is interesting in iteslf as new perspectives are uncovered. So how strictly should this rule be interpreted?

The Bush Space Policy is a good example - this was sneaked out (deliberately) only after the NK rockets and the US successful interception and the differences with Clinton's policy were played down very strongly. Its takne a ong time to develop. Now my piece was said to be npov because it gave only US opinions, and reported no world reactions - but I simply couldn't find any! No one paid any attention, or if they did, it was in another language or out of reach of my searching. In a way, that itself is news.

My other two current pieces, the Straw/veil/Phillips/riots and the General in revolt are both spawning new stuff daily, so much that I can't keep up. I don't know why, but I seem to have encountered an issue that others don't seem to feel is a problem. I find that I loose interest in posting new copy if it has to be in the form of a new article. I suppose in this I am breaching another wikinews principle by feeling a kind of 'ownership' of the stuff. Yet I more than welcome positve contributions such as yours.

Sorry to go on so - any opinion?

Expert calls for less vaccination and more research[edit]

I was aware of the paper which you have used to replace the last citation in this article; however I chose to cite that referring to care workers because it states quite explicity "vaccinating the elderly in institutions reduces the complications of influenza and vaccinating healthy persons under 60 reduces cases of influenza".

This is quite contrary to the impression given in interview on BBC Today programme this morning when all the emphasis was on how weak was the evidence supporting the use of flu vaccines. For tech reasons I can't open the actual interview to verify that the "doctor" being interviewed was T. J. who said he would not advise his old mother to have a jab. The programme was 0734 "The doctor who believes flu jabs could be a waste of time" http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/listenagain/

Please would you consider reverting the citation or at least restoring the reference from which the sentence was quoted?

Africa Award[edit]

Most grateful and honoured! Shall display proudly on user page. I hope more will come out of the Nairobi talks.

Off-topic, but if you are interested in Africa - can you tell me why solar power seemingly has not done much to solve the continent's problems?

Merry Christmas![edit]

HO HO HO! These people got no presents from me this year.
FellowWikiNews is whishing thou a Merry very pegan Christmas , Seasons Greetings, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, or whatever thou calls it, and
realised they had purposefully forgotten about thou. This user is completely thoughtless, doesn't care about Season's Greetings,
and therefore DEMANDS you have yourself a Merry Christmas... NOW!

Failure to comply will result in going to jail with Santa. (Note: Santa is Satan spelt backwards)!

Christmas Story (Children Friendly):

So kids, is Santa Democrat or Republican??!

Often depicted as an obese man wearing a tasteless red, ermine trimmed suit, Santa Claus is a self-employed Caucasian male who's been married to the same woman for several centuries. It appears likely that he is a churchgoer, insofar as he is a Catholic saint and a former bishop. It has to be assumed here that Claus was released from his vows, or else he would not have been married.

Frequent arguments have erupted over the political affiliation of Claus. Ten years ago, Dick Cheney inadvertently dealt a savage blow to the morale of the Republican Party when he misidentified the political affiliation of Santa Claus in his best-selling book, Parliament of Whores. "Santa Claus," he said, "is a Democrat." However it is perfectly obvious from his demographic profile alone that Santa is in fact a Republican.

This assessment is often rebutted by Democrats with Anne-McCaffery counter-analysis: Santa Claus has no children. High-achieving professionals without children trend Democratic. While the Clausian canon does not specifically address the issue of Santa's children, numerous extra-canonical sources suggest that Claus did, in fact, reproduce. Numerous Christmas TV movie specials alone support this point.

Santa is renowned for an aggressive adherence to a binary naughty/nice list, which suggests an impatience for nuanced moral positions that betrays his Republican preferences. Santa's mere willingness to define individuals along a naughty/nice axis demonstrates his indifference to the philosophical stance of, say, The New York Times. And note that no canonical or extra-canonical Clausian text indicates that Santa ever attended college or, God forbid, graduate school.

THE END!!!

How is this image not appropriate? It seemed perfect for Hepatitis scare at a New Zealand McDonald's restaurant. FellowWikiNews (W) 20:28, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
