[edit] First article

I wrote my first article. It needs reviewed, but I don't know how to request it be done. Could you help me with that? Unitanode (talk) 23:09, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

You should add review to an article if you think it's ready to undergo a peer review and be published. Tempodivalse [talk] 02:15, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the tip. UnitAnode 02:41, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Actually, I had already done that, but for some reason, User:SVTCobra -- in lieu of reviewing it -- just changed it back. This is a pretty frustrating process. UnitAnode 02:44, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
It appears, from checking the history, that Brian McNeil (talk · contribs) was the one who initially removed the review tag. You never re-added it afterward. Then SVTCobra (talk · contribs) came around and tagged as being developing, because all articles not under review should have that template. You can re-add review if you want to, i think, since I see you tried to address the initial problems with the articles. Please, don't be discouraged by this; writing an article can be a challenging process but it's rewarding to get it published, as you'll see the artible be displayed on the main page and it'll be listed in the Google News index. Tempodivalse [talk] 02:49, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I'll try it again. As you glanced at it, did you notice any glaring problems that would keep it from being ready for review? UnitAnode 02:52, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
It looks ok to me. A bit on the short side, perhaps, but otherwise good in terms of writing, style, format. Tempodivalse [talk] 03:06, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
I've reviewed and published the article, it should now appear on the front page. Great work, thanks! Tempodivalse [talk] 03:17, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Thank you so much! I'd have been completely hopeless without your help this evening! UnitAnode 05:02, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
No problem. It's a bit of a learning curve, but I'm sure you'll soon get the hang of it if you keep with it. Tempodivalse [talk] 15:01, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome

I know you've always wanted one :p

Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add helpme to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?
  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Thanks for adding categories to Al-Qaida demands hostage exchange; threatens to kill if demands not met; for some reason I was not awake today. For some reason, the article is not showing up on the Main Page now. As for the first review, that was most peculiar. It should be noted that that is not entirely true, it depends on country and stuff. (IANAL) I think it is in US. In other countries it varies. Some countries you cannot refuse some of rights. From my understanding (which is very limited, and probably wrong). In Canada for example (I think, might be wrong IANAL), I think you have to sign a contract in order to refuse to reserve your moral rights (right to attribution, not having the work used in a degrading way). Hmm. Well, I'm not very proficient with wikimarkup, so I'm probably not the best person to ask about things like this. But I'll help as much as I can. I *think* that the correct formatting for a page layout similar to that of user:Juliancolton is this:

<div style="position: relative; height: 1%;"> <div style="position: relative; margin: 0 -1em; padding: 0; background-color: transparent; border: 1px none #ddd; height: 1%;"> <div style="position: relative; margin: 0 auto; width: 725px; border: 1px solid #4E562C; height: 1%;"> <div style="position: relative; overflow: hidden; height: 450px;"><!-- Height of the main image --> <div style="position: relative; overflow: hidden; margin: 0;">INSERT IMAGE WIDTH HERE</div> </div> <div style="position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 96%;"> <div style="margin: 1em; font-size: 95%;"> </div> <div style="position: absolute; left: 1em; top: 1em; z-index: 10; width: 250px; border: none; padding: 0.75em 1em; background-color:none;"> <div style="font-size: 2em; margin: 0.5em 0; padding-bottom: 3px; color:blue; font-family:'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;"><font color="white">INSERT TEXT HERE</font></div> <div style="clear:both"></div> </t>

Try copying that to your userpage, replacing "INSERT IMAGE/WIDTH/TEXT HERE" places with the image and text you want to use, you can also change things like the font colour or font type by altering font color="white" or font-family:'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;, respectively. Let me know if that works; if not, I'll try looking into it more. Tempodivalse [talk] 00:03, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Thank you so much for this. However I do still have two problems. Can anything be done to

A) change the colour of font (because it is barely legible) and/or B) remove the gap between the bottom of the board and the writing? Could I speak to anyone else about this? Please let me know as soon as you can. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 17:02, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome, no problem. To change the colour of the font, simply add <font color="INSERT COLOUR HERE"> [text you wish to change the colour of] </font>, replacing the "INSERT COLOUR HERE" with any standard colour such as "blue", "red", "green", etc., or even "light blue, "dark red", "dark green" etc. To remove the gap between the bottom of the image and the text is a bit more difficult, and I'm not sure what's the best way to do it, but you could try A) making the width of the image smaller so the text will take up more vertical room, or B) making the text itself larger, with use of <big></big> tags. Hope that makes sense. If that isn't clear, I'll try to re-explain it, or, alternatively, perhaps you can tell me precisely what changes you want and I'll try editing your userpage myself to make them, if that's ok. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 17:39, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

One issue though - and I noticed that you seem to do this frequently - is that whenever you're linking, please make sure to use local links where possible and not wikipedia, especially when linking a country; i.e., United Kingdom as opposed to w:United Kingdom. Wikipedia links should only be used where there's no corresponding page on Wikinews. Tempodivalse [talk] 02:07, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Review

Please could you review 2010 BRIT Awards highlights? It's overdue. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 22:38, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

It doesn't matter now, it's already been published. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 09:30, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Right. Sorry for not replying, I saw your message a few hours ago but was too tired to reply, let alone review the article. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 16:08, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

Thank you for putting the article Court ruling upholds expulsion of New York Senator convicted of assault as Lead 1. Much appreciated, Cirt (talk) 17:48, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

No problem. I did it because the other story wasn't up-to-par on WN:SG (see Talk:Inventor Ronald Howes dies at age 83#Concerns, plus it wasn't as newsworthy for top lead. We didn't have an international-importance story published so I figured the Montserrate story would be ok. Tempodivalse [talk] 18:11, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Yes, international news media have reported on the Monserrate case as well. Cirt (talk) 18:13, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Request

Care to decline this unblock request at User talk:Psalm Tours? The account has made a statement admitting it is both an account named after and managed by a group organization, and that the account is used by multiple different individuals at the organization - a blatant violation of m:Role account. Cirt (talk) 19:35, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

I denied the unblock request, thanks for bringing this to my attention. Tempodivalse [talk] 22:57, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Contest

Could you write up a quick piece for the newsletter? Maybe within the by 3 UTC or so? (Special:EmailUser/The New Mikemoral) Thanks, Mikemoral♪♫ 01:36, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

(sorry i didn't see your message sooner) I've already been the commentator for last week's newsletter; is it appropriate for me to do it again so soon? I dunno ... Tempodivalse [talk] 02:32, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Whoops, I forgot that. No problem, I'll ask someone else. --Mikemoral♪♫ 02:34, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
