[edit] Automate

Hang on, I'm gonna see if I can save us the trouble and automate the process of leaving the {{proxyblock}} template. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 23:58, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Okay. Can't the template be added using AWB or something? Tempodivalse [talk] 23:59, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, it can. –Juliancolton | Talk 00:15, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
The problem is generating the list of pages, but solved none the less. ShakataBot is on the case. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 00:27, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Tempodivalse [talk] 00:28, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Query on source usage

Do you think w:The Sun (newspaper), in addition to the other two non-notable sources used at Former WWE superstar Jeff Hardy arrested on major drug charges, are sufficient for our site verifiability standards? Cirt (talk) 15:04, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Hmm. I generally don't consider tabloids to be reliable sources, and none of these look very trustworthy to me. I'd feel more comfortable if the article contained references to more reliable news sources. Tempodivalse [talk] 15:09, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Careful about "tabloid", which may refer in one usage to quality, and another merely to the style and format the newspaper is printed. However I would agree with you about w:The Sun (newspaper), and the other sources used. Cirt (talk) 15:11, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] changing username

When handling username change requests you really should not usurp/name out the way an account that has edits unless the requesting user can log into it and confirm its theirs. Saquib... Well, he has a not very good history; I would have been disinclined to carry out his request. --Brian McNeil / talk 14:27, 13 September 2009 (UTC)'

Hmm, that didn't occur to me. Thinking over it now, I should have requested he log into the other account and verify it's his. Stupid me. (I suppose we could still request he log into the usurped account and make an edit, to confirm?) Tempodivalse [talk] 14:35, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm here, you've done nothing wrong. By the way, which Saquib, you're talking about. Saqib Qayyum  talk  14:44, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
  • I think Wikipedia has a better template for namechange requests - could probably do with something with more detail and links to check things. --Brian McNeil / talk 14:51, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Yeah, we probably should have more detailed instructions for how to verify things. I usually try to pay attention when doing things like this, just had a senior moment back there. I'll try to be more attentive in the future. Tempodivalse [talk] 16:14, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Encyclopedic content

Heh. If you check recent changes you'll see I was putting in place the stuff to make that it's own WN:SD entry and add it to deletion dropdown list. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:41, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

That sounds like a good idea, I'm surprised this hasn't been done before. I'll be sure to use it in the future. Cheers. Tempodivalse [talk] 16:44, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for the welcome, I was wandering if you could review Jordan Lloyd wins US Big Brother 11? It is my first article here and I am a little unsure if I followed the guidelines correctly. Alucard 16 (talk) 19:36, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

I would like to mention that Jordan winning Big Brother 11 happened on the 15th but the interview with Allison Grodner that revealed that she held the overwhelming majority of the public votes wasn't released until the 16th. Since this was information regarding this topic and the source I provided with this information wasn't published until the 16th keeps the news article from being stale if I understand the policy correctly. [edit] currency conversions

I see you took out the {{money}} template here. Look again closely, it was reporting "10,000 thousand rubles", i.e. ten thousand thousand (or, as you changed it to, 10 million). I've highlighted this display bug on the template's talk page. Another thought is, are the figures lifted from the Guardian correct? If I use Google calculator I get 208.1 thousand GBP. --Brian McNeil / talk 14:07, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Ah, that's right, a thousand thousands are a million. I got confused and thought the extra "thousand" was redundant. Not sure what's causing that bug in the conversion template. Tempodivalse [talk] 14:18, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Blocked

Just out of morbid curiosity, why did you block User:Wackonews? I looked through their contributions and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. And their username doesn't seem offensive. Is it because it is moderately close to Wackynews? Gopher65talk 00:18, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

The username was blocked previously by someone else, it was part of a series of disruptive usernames (it's pretty obvious it's the same guy who created those anti-George Bush usernames, judging by the habit of creating a talk page with a period and then removing it). I just reblocked the account, because it was abusing talk page editing privs (although i probably should have used a more descriptive block summary). Tempodivalse [talk] 00:20, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Ah, k, good to know. I haven't been watching disruptive usernames, beyond the obvious profanity laden ones. I wonder, in all seriousness, whether some of these people have mental issues. I can't think of a logical reason for them to act the way they do. Gopher65talk 00:35, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Your Edits

I was away for a week and I had come back to wikinews just today. I had seen your edits but I can't edit the page to rectify your edits. Two problems with your edits:

  • In edit 886554 you have said "Two of the dead had been injured while selling lampshades on the street..." but actually only the woman was injured while selling lampshades and not "two."
  • Here you have changed "+330 UTC" to "+3.30 UTC" but actually "+330 UTC" or "+512 UTC" is correct. "+330" means "+330 minutes".

Could you please correct them. And thank you for publishing the article. I hope that I am not troubling you. Thank you, --Srinivas 05:40, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] BOT creating article

whats going on in Newsroom? Did you see, a BOT is automatically generating article pages of stale news. Please take action.--110.37.29.192 (talk) 16:33, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

yeah, I noticed that. This is part of a proposal to have a bot create news articles for us, see this thread for more info. Unfortunately, the bot doesn't seem to recognise that the articles are stale and keeps creating them anyway. If the bot continues to flood the newsroom, i'll consider blocking it (but it seems to have stopped now). Tempodivalse [talk] 16:37, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SETimes bot

Those articles should be the last which will be outdated. New articles will be up to date because bot won't add articles which it already added. In this construction of the bot it happens just once, at the beginning of the work. --millosh (talk) 19:22, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

BTW, it is not yet fully automated because the account is not yet autocomfirmed. --millosh (talk) 19:22, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

OK. Thanks for your explanation. Cheers Tempodivalse [talk] 19:34, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Iz not gonna do what you want

I see the CSS you're trying to change, and it's not doing what you want, because the main page is one giant table. It was setup that way so all the cells lined up (top leads, along with bottom "info) to give it a nice clean look. Without that we would have ended up with possibly 9 "columns". Anyways, the changes you make dont work because all the other cells are setup with widths for the same 33/33/33. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 23:45, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

oh .... okay. Shows how little I know about mediawiki markup. :-( Is there any way to get the DPL column to be a bit wider? There's too much whitespace around the leads right now, imo. Widening the recent news column would help balance it a bit. Tempodivalse [talk] 23:46, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
It's not really MW Markup, it's more HTML/CSS. Anyways, I can reduce the padding, that will help reduce the whitespace. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 23:49, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
I see you changed the padding. The whitespaces are still there, but it looks better now. Thanks Tempodivalse [talk] 23:53, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

I'll see if i can get around to it soon, can't do it immediately. Tempodivalse [talk] 14:12, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
I'd like to review your article, but I've made some rather significant changes to it and might no longer qualify as "uninvolved" enough in order to do a review (see Wikinews:Reviewing articles). It might be better to let someone not involved with editing the article to check it instead. In any case, thanks for your efforts creating the article. Cheers Tempodivalse [talk] 22:12, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Don't you think that the article's headline is quite very long: "Leader of Indian BJP party visits Navi Mumbai to support candidates for general election". I guess it can be shortened. Srinivas 04:54, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
It's a bit long, i agree, but titles should be made clear for an international audience. The old title might be a bit confusing for readers not from India, for instance not everyone might know who Advani is or where Navi Mumbai is located. The new title makes all that more clear, although at the expense of a few extra words. Tempodivalse [talk] 13:09, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Proxies

Where are you getting reliable information that these IPs are proxies? I ran a scan of 195.68.63.147, it isn't even running anything. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:12, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

I'm getting the IPs off w:Wikipedia:Open proxy detection and m:Meta:Open proxy detection, which i think are pretty reliable. I don't know why that particular IP was a fals positive, perhaps it closed itself since then or i made a mistake when copying the IP number. Sorry. Tempodivalse [talk] 19:15, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
I take it you've now sussed some of the proxy-checking and range identification stuff? --Brian McNeil / talk 18:52, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
no, I haven't gotten around to that yet - i'm still getting the IPs from meta's proxy list. I'll try to look into getting a proxy checker later. Tempodivalse [talk] 20:01, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Quote

Which quote did you not find a source for at NY Sen. Monserrate found guilty of misdemeanor assault? I will show you the source I used for it. Cirt (talk) 02:29, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

It was the Giola quote. It seems to have disappeared from the NY Daily News article. I just added another source to back it up. Tempodivalse [talk] 02:30, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Very odd! It was there when I read the article, and Google is still showing it there in the New York Daily News link, when I search for the quote! Cirt (talk) 02:32, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, i noticed that too when I did a google search - they most likely updated their article and removed the quote between when you wrote up the article and I reviewed it. No problem though, the extra source backs everything up, the article is good to go. Smile.png Tempodivalse [talk] 02:34, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
