JS

Re: <TheFearow> Is it possible to request the cache of the enwikinews sitewide JS is cleared in the squids? We have some code we want to get running ASAP for anons. Or will it be cleared automatically?

I have just tested this on test.wikipedia with someone who has never been there before. An edit to the site-wide JS immediately showed for them when they went to gen=js, indicating the squids are not caching this at all (at least there, but most likely here as well). This would indicate all changes made to the site-wide JS are near instantaneous. The problem as mentioned on irc is the client-side cache which can exist for up to 31 days, due to the max-age parameter on wikimedia. So, the squids should need no purging. Hmm, After experimenting and consulting with Duesentrieb, it looks like anon users get:
/w/index.php?title=-&action=raw&gen=js&useskin=monobook
and logged in users get:
/w/index.php?title=-&action=raw&smaxage=0&gen=js&useskin=monobook
The s-maxage effectively removes squid caching (causing a MISS 100% of the time) for logged-in users and up to 31 days of server side caching for anonymous users. However, in practice, it looks like the squid cache is invalidated as soon as it is edited. But IANAD* ::Bad news: Both still have max-age=2678400 giving up to 31 days of client-side caching... nothing you can do about that! Splarka 11:13, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As a side note (I'm a little late into this conversation), i find if you do a hard refresh of the javascript page (Not the page that includes the javascript, the actual page of javascript), everything updates instantly. Bawolff 06:47, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but for only you. We wanted to do it for every user, including anons. Matt | userpage | contribs 21:22, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nominated for Adminship

Just a formality, but I need to let you know on-wiki that I've nominated you :) Thunderhead - (talk - email - contributions) 05:10, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{Tasks}}

Hey,

For WN:SG problems, you can use the automatic message/categorisation using the keyword mos, rather than typing your own. It makes it a lot easier to manage. Thanks! Matt | userpage | contribs 21:03, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, thanks, Matt. {{Tasks}} was created during my break so I am not so familiar with it yet. --SVTCobra 21:09, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article in Spanish

Hi there Matt! I saw you wrote this in the Café. Well, the title suggests some sort of criticism to Colombia and Venezuela, maybe could contain some bias or criticism to Uribe and Chávez (presidents)... Next time please inform me in my user talk (either here or here, as you prefer). In any case, thanks for telling us. Regards, Jurock (reply here) 14:11, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Matt, Thanks for your help and encouragement. Brien

Interviews

Great choice of project! If you have any questions, let me know. I think what is important in an interview is to have some questions that are open-ended and can lead into other questions. "Have you ever had to confront your own mortality?" If yes, "When?" If no, "How would you like to die?" Asking questions that can beget a lot of follow-up questions makes for a good, interesting interview, and relieves "Do I have enough questions?" anxiety. --David Shankbone 00:21, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oops

Well, I congratulated and forgot to ask you why I had actually come here. Would you mind attending this petition? It's causing disaster... - Jurock (reply here) 02:25, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done :-) Matt | userpage | contribs 05:24, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bigtick

I added it to my .js. I like it but one problem, whenever it loads it makes a big huge page re-fresh and suddenly the whole page re-loads. I don't like that. FellowWiki Newsie 21:18, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It does? It should only change that one part of the page. What browser are you using? (also, if the sizes are different, it will move the stuff below them. That would be made proper when it actually goes into the main page) Matt | userpage | contribs 21:27, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I use firefox. The first time I seen it, it looked like the whole page was re-loading, but it was the stuff below that was changing, probably because of the image sizes. FellowWiki Newsie 13:02, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Audiowiki podcast

Booya Matto, wondering whats up with the Audiowiki podcast and how we might be able to get more Wiki sound clips out to the public. Or are there existing podcast radio peeps we're friendly with can snag some airtime? .:*:*:DAVUMAYA:*:*:. 00:40, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Page counts

Hey Matt - any idea why this tool of yours is no longer keeping track of page counts? --David Shankbone 21:38, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there.

*wave* Been gone, good to see we haven't lost everyone... irid t i e 00:01, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah :) Unexpected stuff over the weekend, i'm back now. Also note no nowiki tags are needed around *wave* Matt | userpage | contribs 00:03, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, but you can get around that with:
*wave*
by using a space in front of it, but it doesnt work on non-indented lines. Just put the wave not at the start :) Matt | userpage | contribs 00:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
