Basically because people go to the category page and look directly at the templates without reading a help section. They do this even if the help section is on the very cat page that they go to. Yes, they should read the help section. But they don't. That's just the way people are (they're dumb:P). I can't fix this problem by changing the behaviour of people, but I can change the way the cats appear.

On the polling templates page this type of behaviour doesn't really matter because {{Neutral}} gives you a decent idea of what the template is just in the name itself. But what does {{Zh}} mean? What does {{Zh-tw}} mean? No one who isn't familiar with both the ISO-639-2 and the ISO-639-3 codes would have any idea what that means. This places the whole language templates system outside of the reach of a normal random editor (again, if they'd be smart enough to read the FREAKING HELP PAGES;), this wouldn't be a problem). They don't use the language template system correctly because they don't know that Zh means Mandrin Chinese in 639-2 speak. The creation and catting of the redirects (as opposed to the catting of the template itself) solves this problem.

I'm not opposed to giving the language templates themselves *some* kind of cat, just not the cat Category:Language templates. Do you have any cat that you suggest? Gopher65_talk 00:13, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

I thought about doing it that way, but that would mean that either: 1)the server would have to redirect loads and loads and loads of language templates, since they are a high use template, or 2)we'd have to go back and change *every single use* of those language templates to the new ones.

What should have been done was that they should have been created as {{Dutch}} in the first place instead of using language codes. But that wasn't done, and, practically speaking, it is too late to change it now. Gopher65_talk 00:22, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
