Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Thanks for catching that. It was a brainless copy/paste error on my part from the Commons page. Gopher65talk 13:04, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

see review. --Bddpaux (talk)

Thank you for writing this.

I would suggest to add File:Luxembourg_on_the_globe_(Europe_centered).svg to the story, and maybe also File:Luxembourg-Line network public transport-01ESD.jpg or an equivalent?

Regards, --Gryllida (talk) 23:01, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a locator map (through the country's template), and the network map you suggested. Please feel free to amend/correct whatever I submit, I won't mind. - Xbspiro (talk) 23:41, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This looks better now. Thank you! Gryllida (talk) 02:15, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Userspacing articles

We generally try to limit mothballing articles into userspace to an admin action, to be taken when when an article has timed out past its "abandonment" horizon. Because we can't really afford to have people using the project as a webhost for their unsuccessful articles. We tend to userspace original-reporting, but are reluctant to userspace synthesis. I'm thinking of (as an admin action, so I can suppress the redirect) moving it to story preparation. --Pi zero (talk) 00:57, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi zero: I have no objections. (I have asked it to be moved to the user namespace in an edit summary [by an admin], especially to suppress redirects. I did not know about this custom, and will avoid doing this in the future.) - Xbspiro (talk) 01:32, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Half-Life: Alyx article

Btw, because this sort of thing doesn't always get said, in our review system that's so very oriented toward our output product: It seems to me you've been doing a fine job on this (even though our review process got delayed, alas); there have been problems with your article, which afaict were simply things you didn't happen to know yet —which isn't surprising; this is how learning mostly works, on en.wn— but you've responded to review feedback diligently and intelligently, and it's appreciated. --Pi zero (talk) 03:11, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I second what Pi zero said. Thank you, Xbspiro, for editing based on the discussions at the talk page of the article. Also, I find it difficult to analyse videos, and appreciate it that you find a use for them in the news.
I look forward to your next report about whatever is current, and interests you. Hopefully I will be able to increase my availability at Wikinews in the coming days.
Keep up the good work! Gryllida (talk) 04:11, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Unused FU media

HI. Pprepared stories are like sandbox articles which either makes to the front page, xor it is deleted. it can have all sorts of articles. For this video game article, if it is brought back to the mainspace, one can request UDEL of the FU media. Otherwise we don't keep FU files on-wiki. Beats the purpose of FU otherwise.

I will keep that in mind. (Please delete it.) - Xbspiro (talk) 01:31, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Luxembourg article

Hi. I had something to discuss. It would be really helpful if we got the other three people discussing this too -- @Green Giant, Gryllida, Pi zero:. Our time zones are thoroughly out of sync -- and we really ought to discuss this Friday night. If I can wake up midnight, we all could talk. Till then, I would suggest you start preparing.
•–• 03:55, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It is better to have a centralised discussion than me leaving messages on four talk pages -- so Green Giant, Gryllida, Pi zero, and obviously Xbspiro: could we all agree on 20:00 May 29, 2020 UTC for an IRC meeting? If not -- please respond with what would be a good time, and if you really can't please say so.
•–• 04:01, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Acagastya: - On May 29 I can be on IRC at around 24:00. If that is not good for you, go ahead, and mail the discussion to me please. Alternatively, I am free on May 30-31. The pad file is there to share. - Xbspiro (talk) 11:21, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wait. Could you please tell me the time in UTC? Does "24:00" means Saturday 12 am? I am sorry, it just got confusing. Please use this tool, set the date and time when you are free, in "Set timezone", type Budapest, and in "Convert to timezone", please type "UTC". When you click convert, copy the time you see.
•–• 11:34, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am going to deploy a newer version of the tool -- so services might not be available for some time -- backup link.
•–• 11:53, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
<pi zero weighing in> I'm predictably unavailable for a scheduled get-together any day between 0400 and 1200 UTC. Most other times I can arrange, given notice a day or so in advance. --Pi zero (talk) 12:09, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Anytime between May 30 0:00 UTC and June 1 0:00 UTC seems to be good for me. - Xbspiro (talk) 12:17, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
that would be too late for Green Giant: so let's have discuss with Green Giant where his input is required -- and then do the rest at that time. Also the tool is now deployed -- clear your cache, pressing "shift" while reloading and it will work.
•–• 12:22, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please see User_talk:Acagastya#Luxembourg_article.

Hi

Many thanks for helping with original reporting this year. Happy New Year. --Gryllida (talk) 20:49, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Just a side note that live chat via IRC is available to help contibutors talk, both about news being written and about news they've spotted elsewhere. Perhaps, if you might wish to join it and stay on the chat for a few days, you might meet a few new people. Might help with staying connected with those who are still around. -Gryllida (talk) 04:50, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks gry - I appear there from time to time with the same nick. - Xbspiro (talk) 22:10, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Voting

Hello. Just to let you know there are several votes taking place at WN:RFP for more bureaucrats and new checkusers to help Wikinews function better. Your participation in any or all of them would be most welcome. --Green Giant (talk) 07:08, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom election

Hello. I’m sure you’re already aware of it but can I invite you to vote in our ARBCOM elections? If I’m not wrong, you are eligible to vote because you have made about six hundred edits (250 being the minimum). [24Cr][talk] 15:05, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Personal userspace part

Re this edit, is there evidence of consensus for that? I don't see what's wrong with developing articles in the userspace before moving it to main. Pandakekok9 (talk) 04:11, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pandakekok9: The custom here seems to be to write them as prepared articles, which is why I have deleted that part. I know that it is standard in other wikis, I have done that in hu.wp. However, the wiki-cultures are different - for instances, where the assumptions of [new] users about userspace might have caused a hassle, see this above or DannyS712's talkpage. Should you want to discuss this further, I suggest you post to the Water Cooler. - Xbspiro (talk) 08:50, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

For outstanding and exceptional diligence on English and Hungarian Wikinews. --JJLiu112 (talk) 02:57, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@JJLiu112: Thanks. - Xbspiro (talk) 16:12, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fuel caps/limits

Are we cool with the current state in story prep? Cheers, --SVTCobra 04:12, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. We've created Wikinews:Writing contest 2023, which will start on February 1 and end on May 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 and 2013 contests. As a reporter who has recently been inactive, it would be a great time for you to rejoin. If you are interested in signing up, please do so at Wikinews:Writing contest 2023#Entrants and create a category for the articles you submit. Heavy Water (talk) 04:23, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
