Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Find help and get involved
Write your first article for Wikinews!

Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it!



It is recommended you read the article guide before starting. Also make sure to check the list of recently created articles to see if your story hasn't already been reported upon.

Re: Luxembourg introduces free public transport

Thank you for writing this.

I would suggest to add File:Luxembourg_on_the_globe_(Europe_centered).svg to the story, and maybe also File:Luxembourg-Line network public transport-01ESD.jpg or an equivalent?

Userspacing articles

We generally try to limit mothballing articles into userspace to an admin action, to be taken when when an article has timed out past its "abandonment" horizon. Because we can't really afford to have people using the project as a webhost for their unsuccessful articles. We tend to userspace original-reporting, but are reluctant to userspace synthesis. I'm thinking of (as an admin action, so I can suppress the redirect) moving it to story preparation. --Pi zero (talk) 00:57, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Half-Life: Alyx article

Btw, because this sort of thing doesn't always get said, in our review system that's so very oriented toward our output product: It seems to me you've been doing a fine job on this (even though our review process got delayed, alas); there have been problems with your article, which afaict were simply things you didn't happen to know yet —which isn't surprising; this is how learning mostly works, on en.wn— but you've responded to review feedback diligently and intelligently, and it's appreciated. --Pi zero (talk) 03:11, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I second what Pi zero said. Thank you, Xbspiro, for editing based on the discussions at the talk page of the article. Also, I find it difficult to analyse videos, and appreciate it that you find a use for them in the news.
I look forward to your next report about whatever is current, and interests you. Hopefully I will be able to increase my availability at Wikinews in the coming days.

Unused FU media

HI. Pprepared stories are like sandbox articles which either makes to the front page, xor it is deleted. it can have all sorts of articles. For this video game article, if it is brought back to the mainspace, one can request UDEL of the FU media. Otherwise we don't keep FU files on-wiki. Beats the purpose of FU otherwise.

Hi. I had something to discuss. It would be really helpful if we got the other three people discussing this too -- @Green Giant, Gryllida, Pi zero:. Our time zones are thoroughly out of sync -- and we really ought to discuss this Friday night. If I can wake up midnight, we all could talk. Till then, I would suggest you start preparing.

Wait. Could you please tell me the time in UTC? Does "24:00" means Saturday 12 am? I am sorry, it just got confusing. Please use this tool, set the date and time when you are free, in "Set timezone", type Budapest, and in "Convert to timezone", please type "UTC". When you click convert, copy the time you see.

Personal userspace part

Re this edit, is there evidence of consensus for that? I don't see what's wrong with developing articles in the userspace before moving it to main. Pandakekok9 (talk) 04:11, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pandakekok9: The custom here seems to be to write them as prepared articles, which is why I have deleted that part. I know that it is standard in other wikis, I have done that in hu.wp. However, the wiki-cultures are different - for instances, where the assumptions of [new] users about userspace might have caused a hassle, see this above or DannyS712's talkpage.
