Template:Itemstub [edit]
Not very usefull in news articles. —FellowWikiNewsie 01:59, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Delete We don't have stubs, it's expand or die in a day or so. This - like many of the following templates is useless to us. Please refer to WN:AAA, I have commented on the meta and wikipedia pages of the project that brought us these fun templates. --Brian McNeil / talk 15:58, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Note we have template:stub/template:expand which falls in and out of use occasionally, but we don't need another template. Bawolff ☺☻ 23:15, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- I regularly use expand on short articles; the difference is the article is complete but short. A stub is more for future expansion which is a luxury we don't have with news. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:03, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

- Redirect and merge to Category:San Francisco, California. —FellowWikiNewsie 14:40, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
-
- I don't think category redirecting is a good idea anywhere, because in the case of it even existing as a redirect, when somebody adds the category to a page the link will be blue. Since someone might instinctively think that "since it's not red, there's nothing wrong", it'll eventually end up as a redirect with articles in it. —Zachary talk 15:24, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Category:Vehicles [edit]
Has three articles in it. Bit minimal/pointless IMO. --MarkTalk 19:55, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

- Redirect and merge to Category:Cars. —FellowWikiNewsie 14:40, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

- Delete. I can't ever see this category being effectively maintained - and it is encyclopedic. --Brian McNeil / talk 08:15, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
- Keep Where can go the users to see news about cars, motorcycles and so on. There is a lot of news about vehicles in the newspapers, TV channels and so on. This is basic for a minimal news geneal quality. A car is a vehicle and vehicle includes more transport than cars --Mac 09:04, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Image:Delta before after.png [edit]
The copyright for this image is questionable; being both "fair use" and under a creative commons license could be conflicting. The image itself is IMO unnecessary. The only difference between the web page before/after is a color change and the new logo. The new logo has been uploaded as Image:Delta logo.gif, is properly sourced and licensed, and is sufficient in the article the images are used on. Apologies to the uploader, who might have spent some time creating the comparison picture. —Zachary talk 06:34, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- Delete because fair use images are not allowed if they aren't used on any article.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 12:03, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- Delete The relevant article conveys enough information about Delta's rebranding (new logo, old livery), and I've decided not to argue for the use of this particular image. I will, however, argue for the future use of such images to be possible when a company decides to rebrand itself by allowing the people who create said images to receive credit for them (the reason for the seemingly "conflicting" use of CC-by-2.5). Not only did I spend time creating the image, but also researching the fair use guidelines for using such images. I believe the news value of these images justified their use. It shows you in one glance how the Delta brand has changed overnight. People should be able to combine multiple images into one image to convey an idea. That's what fair use is for. --Omaryak 21:06, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Image:NewStandard vs WashingtonPost by Alexa.JPG [edit]
Fair use claims for screen shots has always been different here compared to Wikipedia, where it is made very clear that fair use can only be claimed if the article is directly related to the screen shot, for example screen shot of a website on an article about that website. See for example Template:Non-free web screenshot. I suggest we change our Template:Screen shot to clearly mention this, and change our policy on this.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:54, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
- Keep. The U.S. nonprofit news agency shuts down article where the screen shot is used has nothing to do with Alexa. The graph rendered by Alexa does relate directly to the article, so hmmm... By keeping this screen shot, Wikinews makes the fair use assertion that it can snap a picture and re-use a graph made by the tools provided by an outside party. Intuitively, it doesn't seem to make much sense.
Yet, if this image were removed, a portion of the article's text of becomes senseless since it makes direct references to the image.
So in that sense, Alexa is news because it has something to contribute to the article. Under that context, its web page content is subject to Fair use.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Edbrown05 (talk • contribs) 19:46, 29 April 2007
-
- You could easily just explain it without the graph, rework the text and keep the OR tag. I believe screen shots should only be used to comment on the websites themselves, e.g. in Google convicted in case brought by Belgian press and Fictional documentary about Flemish independence causes consternation in Belgium. To use a slippery slope analogy: are we going to allow use of Alexa graphs on every article on websites that we report?--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 20:08, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Delete. with no fair use rationale, this is just a copyvio. see section "Intellectual Property and Copyright Infringement Notice" on alexa's terms of use. we can use an external link to the alexa page instead. –Doldrums(talk) 08:42, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
- Their 'terms of use' page is itself probably a copyright infringement in and of itself in view of every other place that says the same thing for all the standard unthinking reasons. -Edbrown05 08:53, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
- The interface (web page) is not password protected, anybody can go there. So I asked a question of their software and got a reply. Now I cannot report the response, and am relegated tbeing able to only just talk about it? -Edbrown05 08:57, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
- That is sheer... I'm trying to climb up the slippery slope. signed Ed
- why don't u just add it as an external link. that way, it's completely ok. u can also play around with a few more comparable sites to get a better picture, for eg., [3]. –Doldrums(talk) 10:00, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know. I open the link provided by Doldrums immediately above and notice on the resulting web page that Alexa says after clicking "Put this graph on your site!" link: To put an Alexa Traffic Graph on your site or blog simply copy the code below and paste it into your site where you would like it to appear. Feel free to play with the user-editable variables below to create a graph that works best with your site. Graphs are free, but they do come with a small advertisement at the top. Intended uses and restrictions.
- So I don't think this image is a big deal, and the image should not be deleted. It seems that Alexa encourages the use and distribution of its charts. -Edbrown05 01:41, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

- Delete - Despite Ed's logic, I think it is impossible to claim Fair use if the image is not used. This renders the debate about whether it is just another screenshot moot. Basically we are just hosting a copyrighted image that is subject to Alexa's policy: The Service, and all materials on the Service including images, text, illustrations, logos, audio and video files (collectively "intellectual property"), are protected by copyrights, trademarks, servicemarks, or other proprietary rights which are either owned by Alexa, or owned by other parties who have licensed their intellectual property to Alexa. Content here on Wikinews is supposed to be free so that others can feel free to duplicate it on their sites. This cannot be said for this image. --SVTCobra 02:10, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- It can be said that this image is free. Sheesh, look at the Doldrums link and note that immediately underneath the graph there is a link to "Put this graph on your site". -Edbrown05 02:54, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Canadian Kid Grows Popularity On Piczo.com [edit]
- Umm where to begin. Well first, 10 000 hits over a period of a month from being featured on the frontpage of a specific webpage isn't that amazing. B, its piczo, and piczo should go brackrupt (Okay that's not a valid reason, but its my feeling none the less). It contains nothing newsworthy. I'm still waiting for some native speaker to come up with an alternative name for this category, for articles such as On bereavement and acceptance: Yale study of grief process.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:16, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

- old & tagged for cleanup, original analysis of unsourced data. — Doldrums(talk) 05:11, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- This article (before I doctored it) is plainly fallacious. Seeing how bad the original was, I doubt my edits will be retained. As of now, it's still unsourced: who thinks it's "only a matter of time" before racial tensions erupt into violence? Namffohyr 17:00, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- I was just listening on the radio to someone who thinks the trend towards racism in Australia is all the PM's fault... But anyways I personally think that we should refrain from reporting on un-scientific polls, especially a poll like that due to its limited sample and limited time it gathered opinions. - Comment: I disagree; I think it would be more logical to think of medicine as a broad science, as it is defined in Wikipedia (w:Medicine), i.e. the applied science of health that uses surgery and medicines. Mixing the term "medicine" with "drugs" is very confusing imho. I you think about cat:Med as I do, it's practically synonymous with Cat:Health. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 20:48, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
