Another author of “anti-bush” books dies of apparent suicide? [edit]
Old, no links, unfinshed, NPOV --Cspurrier 16:02, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
- Keep To me it doesn't seem to meet the "deletion guidelines" requirements. I also think it is an article which answers the invitation we were all given before we started in wikinews
"What we want from YOU!We want you to write articles for Wikinews that:You find interesting: If it's of interest of you, it will be interesting to many other people! You feel isn't getting adequate coverage: Do you know of an issue that has been forgotten or is getting enough attention in the rest of the press? Here's your chance to tell the world! Is important to you: The news you write can be about a global event or what's happening in your local town - we don't mind!"
I don't think its beyond repair in terms of NPOV and it mostly just states accepted facts. I will try to work on it later this week.

Results of 2005 Croatian local government elections [edit]
This was originally a redirect, but despite a clear invitation to rename the article here once it was ready for publication and an explanation on the user's talk page that redirects should be used so that later renaming is possible, it, too, was replaced with transclusion. The existence of the transclusion prevents the article from being renamed from the user namespace to the main article namespace. Uncle G 13:23, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
- Comment: Removing a single-edited article on request of the original author in order to replace it with the transcluded article is a trivial use of the speedy delete, which any admin could do. It is not a major problem. But the users involved have been made aware of the process, and the need to retain the edit history, so I don't think this will be an issue in the future. - / 17:41, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

President Bush marks end of WWII; reports circulate his Grandfather helped Hitler [edit]
Reason: Bush's attendance at VE day events has already been covered. The rest of the article is simply a lame attempt at the PoV pushing of material from 2003. The so-called 'background info' - which is not at all related to the VE day celebrations - isn't even about President Bush, only an ancestor. Dan100 (Talk) 07:20, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- To be honest, I'm split on whether we should keep it or not. Personally, I tend to not adopt a harsh line on issues, and I think the article is imformative, so I was very inclined to say "Keep". What made me not say that was the fact that the sources were all 2003 and 2004, which makes the article outdated and by extension, irrelevant. That doesn't mean it should be outright deleted, and it doesn't actually seem to be POV, but should we really be keeping articles about events that occured many months or even years ago? News is all about up-to-the-minute stuff. Ronline 07:51, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- I am quite torn here. The article, as it stands, should be Deleted. It is POV, not news, it's just not good. That being said, I'd really like to see a piece on the Prescott stuff itself, if anything new has occured. So I'd encourage all editors to see if we can't find anything new regarding the issue, and then writing a new article if we can. Lyellin 13:51, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- That's a good idea, so I went looking on both Google and Yahoo. The latest thing to be published is a Guardian (a British newspaper) article from September 2004 - nothing more recent. However there is an excellent line in the article: "The Prescott Bush story has been condemned by both conservatives and some liberals as having nothing to do with the current president." Says it all! Dan100 (Talk) 16:09, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Delete. The article has redeeming qualities, but it's been the cause of too much arguing — Bush isn't even in Europe anymore. Perhaps next time an article can be more quickly developed into a version people agree on. -- IlyaHaykinson 14:14, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Delete. It is no longer news. --Cspurrier 14:35, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Delete. I looked around for anything recent or fresh from this article, and found absolutely nothing. The lawsuit against the Bush family mentioned in the article appears to have been dismissed. Also, I read: "The Anti-Defamation League in the US is supportive of Prescott Bush and the Bush family. In a statement last year they said that "rumours about the alleged Nazi 'ties' of the late Prescott Bush ... have circulated widely through the internet in recent years. These charges are untenable and politically motivated ... Prescott Bush was neither a Nazi nor a Nazi sympathiser." Furthermore, the most recent source is from September 2004, and the only reason it ran then was because of the upcoming November 2004 election. Otherwise this is a hot, breaking story - from 2003. So it is not news. DouglasGreen 17:05, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

- Delete. Anything that needs to use the word "meanwhile" to link one part of the story to another has serious problems. However I do think that the Prescott story is newsworthy, if only something had happened recently. Millions worldwide still in slavery is a good example. People have been in slavery since Methuselah was a boy. What makes it news is that the ILO released a report. - Borofkin 00:26, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
- Keep . I am going to try to get in touch with the lawyer for the Holocaust plantiffs to find out what's happening with the lawsuit. I realize we will still have the NPOV issue in some people's minds, but hopefully the article can avoid deletion..because then I would run into the resurrection problem if I try to reintroduce it later ??? Paulrevere2005 13:04, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
update; Ok these 2 octogenarians(plaintiffs) are in the news almost every week and I finally have some contact leads(see below); So I will get in touch with 1 or both of them and write a brand new story about their lawsuit and whatever else they want to talk about. They sure have some strong opinions.[[1]]

Category:New_York_City_Subway [edit]
Reason: We should not endlessly multiply categories in this fashion. Most world cities have a subway, or bus system, or taxi system, etc. This should be handled by putting it into two categories: the name of the city, and the category Category:Transport. DouglasGreen 23:45, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Delete - at a future point in time a sub-category of Transportion Category:Subways may be needed, especially if we can develop a large enough stream of articles. Frankly, subway news is a genre in certain cities, and could use its own portals if we get enough stories going. - / 03:15, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
Category:New_York_City [edit]
Reason: City names should follow the format, <city>, <state> or the format <city>, <country>. That leads to the Category:New York, New York not just New York City. If we let the different formats multiply, no one will know the category without looking it up. DouglasGreen 23:45, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

- Keep for accuracy. The name of the country is The Netherlands; similar to "The" Hague (I don't think we'd be dropping that "the",right?)" Wikipedia says "It should also be noted that the plural "Netherlands" is actually an archaic term, referring to the time when it was a collection of regions that weren't yet fully united [[3]]
To be accurate, we should delete the "netherlands" category as it only accurately applies to a bygone era. Paulrevere2005 03:40, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Are we to expect a tempestuos pontiff in an increasingly tempestuous world? [edit]
Reason: Article was placed on Dr previously for {{notnews}} under title "Pope Benedict XVI's opposition to the Masonic Order and other "religious mysticism" goes back at least 22 years", during which vote editorial content was removed and title altered to "Pope Benedict XVI's last speech as Cardinal on April 18 speech mentions dislike of sects and "human mysticism"". Since the deletion tag was removed, Paulrevere2005 has:
- Reverted the article with expansions to the disputed version which led to its placement on Dr. [4]
- Moved the article to "Pope Benedict XVI's last speech as Cardinal emphasizes dislike of "religious mysticism""
- Moved the article to "Are we to expect a tempestuos pontiff in an increasingly tempestuous world?"
- Recreated the content under Are we to expect a tempestuos Pontiff in an increasingly tempestuous world?
- Returned to editing this article when the other was tagged as disputed.

- Well, you're right about this entry. It should not appear on this page.
- It should appear on speedy delete instead.
- I'm waiting for Rolling Stone to come a knockin' at Wikinews' door for the copyright violations in this article. The quoting is so extensive that the reader easily loses track of where the quotes begin and end.
- It's a privilege to edit on Wikinews. Jimbo Wales can easily declare this site a disaster and shut us down if we abuse that privilege. If Wikinews is ever called on a copyright violation by a mainstream news outlet, (and Rolling Stone certainly qualifies), this site may be shut down before we even know what hit us. Administrators, please delete copyright violations as soon as they are caught. — DV 09:27, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Delete for copyvio reasons. A valid topic, the article should be re-written with original work as per the copyvio message on that page. -- Davodd | Talk 09:56, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- English 101; There is NO copyvio because rolling stone is shown in the article as the source quoted. In terms of content you can't have it both ways, if its my paraphrasing then its not NPOV. The only way it can REALLY be npov is if its quoted verbatim.

- The site owners, (Jimbo Wales and the Wikimedia Foundation) have asked us to stick to some non-negotiable rules, including NPOV, the "wiki process", and respecting copyright, when editing articles. As a common courtesy, I agree to abide by those rules while I am a guest on their site.
- We've all been granted a privilege to edit on this site, and that privilege can be taken away if we break the rules. Editing on Wikinews is not a "right". Wikinews is not a government-owned web site. It is privately owned by the Wikimedia Foundation.
- If at some point I get sick and tired of living with the rules on Wikinews, I can always set up a competing "Wikinews" on my own web site. The MediaWiki software is freely available to all.
- (If you remember when you were a teenager, this is kinda like when you moved out, you didn't have to live under your parent's rules anymore.)
- Throwing around silly accusations that we are on the way to "Pravda" by following the rules reflects more poorly on you than the rest of us.
- Copyright violations put this site at risk of being shut down. Extensively quoting an article and then adding three original sentences is a copyright violation, plain and simple. Please don't take my word for it - send a copy of your article to Rolling Stone's legal department and ask them what they think of it. — DV 20:13, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I can't find the article"Hunter Thompson's anti-Bush language brought the Secret Service to his door."on wikinews.Paulrevere2005
- Delete for reasons stated. And honestly, if you can't abide by Wikinews policy, and really feel that it is your fundamental right to "report," then why don't you start your own news site? There are a thousand free blogging sites out there that will let you broadcast whatever you want without any editorial policy whatsoever. --Fastfission 06:40, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- There are currently four very similar articles on this event. Does anyone object to me deleting the 3 older ones and keeping the new one until the rest of the dispute is resolved? Specifically, I am proposing deleting:
Another author of “anti-bush” books dies of apparent suicide
Hunter Thompson's anti-Bush language brought the Secret Service to his door

- and keeping:

- No objections from me. Maybe you can archive 1 of the 3 up for deletion as there is some different info in those 3.If someone wants to re-write they might look at today's ny times article by frank rich "Gonzo Gone, Rather Going, Watergate Still Here " If someone can figure out what the word "counselor" might have meant and who wrote it on Gonzo's typewriter, this story might gather even more momentum. I will rewrite it myself if I can figure out how to avoid the "old news" slur.Paulrevere2005

- OPPOSED! Wikinews' criteria for deletion do not include the reasons given by Amgine.Paulrevere2005 03:31, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, it does. This site is "en.wikinews". When an article is not written in English, those of us who don't read whatever language the article is written in have no way of knowing if the article has a copyright violation, unsourced information, defamatory material, or is just sheer nonsense.
- If anyone wants to keep this article, translate it into English, and resubmit it, so we can verify its contents. There are a number of Wikinews sites in other languages for contributors who don't care to write articles in English.
- We should speedy delete all articles that are not written in English, or we risk being burned by someone with an anti-Wikinews agenda at some point down the line.

- While PaulRevere2005 is technically correct that "not English" is not part of our deletion criteria, that's because it's part of our "speedy deletion" criteria. Unless someone objects, I'm adding the speedy deletion criteria as counting for normal deletion, and deleting the article. Objections? Pingswept 01:52, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
