FBI-vetted statement now contradicted by FBI [edit]

Ignoring the NPOV issues - I really don't think this is news. The FBI did not change its story, the Associated Press changed its story. Why? Because it gathered more information that was relevant to the story and wanted to include it. I don't think this is news. -- RossKoepke 14:54, Jun 19, 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps it is too confusing to be news. Nobody seems to think its important that the first story said the FBI vetted(read and pre-approved) the statement which said the FBI told CardSystems to keep quiet..but if they vetted that statement; how can the FBI now say that statement was wrong?
I am particularly concerned about how source links we use for our stories can be redirected to different versions with different titles and by different authors. Does this happen often? I will bring it up on the water cooler. Note at this search page[[1]] story #2 by Bruno..when you click on it, you are redirected to a different story by different authors. How can we maintain accurate source links for our stories if the links are re-directed to different stories? Paulrevere2005 03:26, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Delete. AP updated its story. Not news. Dan100 (Talk) 13:17, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Delete. News organizations such as AP (and indeed Wikinews) sometimes get their facts wrong, and after further checking will send out an update to a story. I think if anything, this article simply caught AP in the act of doing low quality reporting. This happens every day with a number of articles, given their publishing volume. -- IlyaHaykinson 14:14, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Delete. ok I'll vote for delete also; but I'd appreciate it if someone would let me know whether its common at mainstream search engines for the links to the older version of stories to redirect readers to the newer versions as is being done in this case? Has anyone seen that before on those search web-sites like yahoo? Paulrevere2005 22:17, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, actually on at least one or two occasions while writing stories for Wikinews I was hit by this problem — I wrote something, and then nobody could verify my facts cause the article changes without notice. At least with Wikinews you can link to older revisions... -- IlyaHaykinson 22:50, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

31 travelers from Rwanda die in terrible horrible bus crash [edit]

Already have an article on this, POV title. NGerda 20:01, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)

Oddly, the person who wrote this edited the existing story first :-/ Dan100 (Talk) 20:02, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Very strange; I'm adding it to Odd edits. NGerda 20:07, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)

Where is the other story about this, if one exists i see no reason why we should wait 3 days, copy any content from this story to the other one that isn't their and delete this one, or move from the other story, depnds on what title we prefer, but i don't think this is a verry good title "...terrible horrible..." (ok we get the point already).--Ryan524 20:10, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'll attempt to notify the author of this, and I'll be returning home and coming back with full anti-vandal force in less than two hours. NGerda 20:12, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)
I see 30_travelers_from_Rwanda_die_in_Ugandan_bus_crash wich i think is the same article you were talking about, i say update it to 31 died, and delete this one. Unless any objections form you two i see no reason why we need to wait 3 days if its a duplicate...--Ryan524 20:15, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
After seeing full justification on odd edits, i've decided to delete it because its a duplicate articl with a POV title, any one disagrre, lets us know here, and admin can always undelete it.--Ryan524 20:21, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I undeleted it as whoever wrote deserves to know what happened to it. Dan100 (Talk) 20:55, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It should stay deleted, its a duplicate article with a POV title, you want to let them know what happened to it, leave a message on their talk page.--Ryan524 17:05, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I already told him about it, and he hasn't responded since I asked him a day ago. NGerda 17:09, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)
I edited your message to beter explain it, and will be re-deleing the page since that was the only reason it was restored.--Ryan524 17:16, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The Wikinews:Speedy deletion guidelines explain what can be deleted "on-sight". Everything else has to do three days on here. We have to maintain our intergrity, and not make up rules as we go along. Therefore, I'm re-starting the three day period from now. Dan100 (Talk) 08:52, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I am surpised that does not duplicate articles, i have proposed so though, see Wikinews:Water_cooler/policy#Speedy_Deletion_Policy_Addition.--Ryan524 09:26, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

US teen missing in Aruba feared dead [edit]

The article is simply not notable. In 1999, for example, at least 972 people were kidnapped in Columbia alone. I imagine a more recent statistic is similar. However, no Columbian kidnappings have ever made Wikinews to my knowledge. Why should she be different because she's American and can pay a ransom?-- Superm401 22:07, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • Keep - This story is notable, thousands of news sites from around the world are covering it. Notable is not one of the is not one of the criteria for deletion on Wikinews. The lack of news stories about Columbian kidnappings is not a reason to delete this one, it is a reason to create a story about them.. --Cspurrier 22:15, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Comment. By saying it's not notable, I mean not news-worthy, which does qualify it for deletion. Also, whether or not other news sources think it is newsworthy has nothing to do with whether it is. That's just bandwagon fallacy. Superm401 14:56, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Comment. By saying that, you've completely ignored my post above, in which I clearly state that my specific reason for deletion is "Article not newsworthy", which is reason three on the guidelines. If you disagree with my assesment of its newsworthiness, rebut that part of my argument, explaining why you disagree. Don't simply ignore the point. Superm401 21:20, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Comment - Per Superm401's request for comment on Water cooler: This issue is apparently settled, but most major news outlets found this story worthy of coverage (Google News Search for "Natalee Holloway"); how is Wikinews different? Comments above encourage the creation of articles about kidnappings in Colombia -- why not, if there are verifiable sources? I choose to abstain from voting as my edit count is terribly low... --Chiacomo 06:46, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Not news. Mr. Jones 21:19, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I first thought of this as a "dead donkey", a sentimental "human interest" piece. Actually it's worse than that. It's not about an event of any significance (one could mince words about the PR bash being an "event", but really, it's just not). It's just a puff piece about a coincidence. It just happens to be n years after it came out. Trivial pursuit has been around for years. It's not changed in any significant way. This kind of "anniversary" story should be roundly rejected provided that there are not a significant number of people who were affected by the original event or seriously concerned by its occurence (e.g. the V.E. day celebrations, the fall of the USSR, the jailing of the Birmingham six). In comparison who cared that TP came out? No doubt the manufuacturer and its employees, and perhaps a few fans; probably not even all the people at the PR bash. No one else really. And even they would not feel as strongly about it (I hope) as people concerned by the significant events I mention above. The clue is in the name of the game: "trivial". Mr. Jones 06:34, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I feel that the intentions of the writer are good and that quite a lot of work on it could bring the fact that it is a new way of playing the game to the fore. I therefore don't think it should be deleted. ClareWhite 13:17, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

ClareWhite hits on what the original motivation for writing this story was about, a novel way of playing the game. Also a way that a business interest generated traffic. I wrote it as a puff piece. That's why I left it alone. Delete. -Edbrown05 13:36, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ridiculous. The copyvios should have been removed and the article re-created to remove them from the history. I can do that yet, I suppose, but there's no reason you couldn't have done it in the first place, CS. Mr. Jones 22:07, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Perpetrators of Iraq mosque attacks identified [edit]

The only two sources listed, Al-Basrah and GlobalResearch.ca, are hardly reputable media organizations. Not to mention that a single author wrote both sources and we all know what happens when only a single source is used. Further, simply pasting a large quote as news is inappropriate. If you can find more evidence and sources for this story, then it should be rewritten professionally instead of simply copying and pasting. Otherwise, it should be removed.
