Users with global rights should not use them on the English Wikinews except in the exceptional circumstances detailed below. Use of global rights which is prohibited by this policy may result in blocking and requested rights removal.

The implementation of global user rights on Wikimedia projects extends to the English Wikinews. This policy defines their use on this wiki.

Use of rights

Stewards

See also: m:Stewards

Stewards may use their global rollback on the English Wikinews, and may use Special:Undelete to view deleted revisions in the course of their duties as stewards. They may also perform other actions at their discretion in emergency situations (such as removal of access). However, they may not otherwise use their global rights on this wiki.

In their global role, stewards grant CheckUser and Oversight permissions to all projects (per Arbitration Committee or Board decisions), and can remove all permissions (in an emergency, or per user request, Arbitration Committee decision, or Board decision). These actions can affect the English Wikinews, but are done and logged at Meta Wiki.

Global sysops

See also: m:Global sysops

Global sysops are users with global permissions associated with the fighting of vandals, especially on smaller wikis which struggle to deal with the level of vandalism. Global sysops are not permitted to use any of the rights associated with their role on the English Wikinews, except as detailed below. A global sysop who breaches these policies, except in urgent cases where no administrator can be found, will be indefinitely blocked at the English Wikinews and will undergo an immediate vote of confidence at Meta.

Rollback

Global sysops can use rollback by default, provided they previously have not had the right removed at the English Wikinews or been blocked in the last 90 days for edit warring on the English Wikinews. If removal has previously occurred, they must request and be allowed to be use rollback locally by an English Wikinews administrator. Furthermore, any English Wikinews administrator can ask a global sysop to stop using rollback if what they deem to be misuse occurs, and the global sysop must comply with such a request. Such a decision by an administrator can be appealed to the wider community.

Deleted contributions

See also: Wikinews:Deletion policy#Access to deleted pages

The English Wikinews has adopted a policy that certain types of deleted contributions remain visible to administrators through Special:DeletedContributions. Global sysops may not access this information without the express consent of an English Wikinews administrator.

Removal of rights

A user who abuses their global rights by knowingly or recklessly using their global rights on the English Wikinews in contravention of this policy should be reported to meta:Steward requests/Permissions or #wikimedia-stewards immediately, where the stewards will determine whether an emergency removal of tools is required. An indefinite block may also be placed on the account locally during this period if necessary to prevent further abuse (see the above section).
