The composer of Zorba the Greek and Serpico, leading greek musician and political activist Mikis Theodorakis died today in Athens. Theodorakis, XX, was one of the most prominent figures of Greek culture during the 20th century.
He is best known for his scores in famous Hollywood movies, such as Alexis Zorbas and Serpico, in 1964 and 1973 respectively. Theodorakis cooperated with some of the most significant singers of Greece, like George Dalaras, Grigoris Bithikotsis and Stelios Kazantzidis as well as with foreign music artists, such as Georges Moustaki and the Turkish composer Zülfü Livaneli.
Theodorakis had also a political career in Greece, starting in 1960s with the creation of the Lambrakis Youth; a political union dedicated to the leftist politician Grigoris Lambrakis who was assasinated in Thessaloniki. Mikis Theodorakis resisted against the 7-year greek military junta, from 1967 to 1974 when he was exiled in Paris. After the announcement of his death, the Greek President stated XXXXXX and the Greek Prime Minister said XXXXX.
