Wikinews:Tsunami Help/Aid Agencies/United States and Canada
Thursday, December 30, 2004
WARNING: Due to the Wikinews's open and collaborative nature, it cannot guarantee the veracity of outside links or the absence of possible scams involving charities, thus the potential danger of fraud exists. In particular, beware of bogus organizations that have names similar to those of well-known aid agencies. Also beware of unsolicited emails that ask for your donation online. For those who want to make a donation, the most secure channels are established web sites and well-publicized telephone hotlines.

General notes
Many employers in United States match your contributions to charities. So if you contribute $100 the employer would put another $100. This way you could effectively double your contribution. Check with your employer and find out which charities are matched by your employer and make a donation to one of those charities.
Contributions to organizations classified under United States IRS Section 501(c)(3) are tax deductible. [IRS.gov] has info on exemption requirements.
We have received reports that Monetary Donations from the United States would be more beneficial (at the current time) as there are some logistics issues with moving clothes and other food items. Please consider this while making your donation. Source: [[1]]
The BBB Wise Giving Alliance reports on nationally soliciting charitable organizations that are the subject of donor inquiries. Below are some of the charities involved in tsunami relief efforts.
