There's a new bumper quiz up at Wikinews:World News Quiz, covering the whole of the past year. Could an admin put a note in the Sitenotice if there's no objection. Also it may be worth mentioning on the blog, who should I contact about that? the wub "?!" 17:13, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

I have an article that is in search of a home. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nbahn/Joe_Klein_sandbox Assuming that it wouldn't fit in at Wikinews (even with editing), can anyone think of a place that would welcome this dog of a work? (but it plays well with others!)

This day in history - 2007?[edit]

Just wondering whether the following template should include 2007:

TIBE problem.... DAMN and SERIOUS[edit]

Why I use this as a discussion topic? Because currently, even though the TIBE (Taipei Int'l Book Exhibition) was recently ended this Monday, and I ever got the press pass from TIBE's officials, but....

  1. DAMN: No one (except User:Skenmy) like to do any copy-editing on my articles since I posted at Final day. I'm sure that someone who want to abandon mines.
  2. Very SERIOUS (view carefully, it's related on WMF's Policy): Some users from Japanese Wikipedia suspect my credential (AR) since I added some photos in articles related to Japaneses, some users thought it as a violation of "Personality Rights" and scared that if an involved person knew his/her images uploaded without my permission. But according to Resolution Policy by Wikimedia Foundation, if someone took a photo related to a lived person and uploaded to Commons with free-license, it should be used into that article, and non-free lived person images should be replaced by those free-licensed ones. Then, WHO WAS WRONG? Before replying, please view those key links below: 1, 2, 3. And I will wait Kanjy's reply to petition for this serious picture usage problem.

Reply carefully. Currently, I feel angry and worried on those 2 problems. Brock contact... 13:06, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

What I know about personality rights, pretty much ends at commons:template:Personality rights, but i always thought if it was a person doing something publicly then it was okay. (as in if the article is about them it is fine, but if say the article is about obesity, and you take a picture of a random fat person walking on the sidewalk without asking them, it is not okay). Maybe someone from commons would be able to help you more on that point Bawolff 22:42, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Complainant[edit]

If Wikimania can do several contributions on photos and news wires, why several trade shows, exhibitions can't be so? Due to several unhappy experiences, I decided to break off some relationships with Chinese Community. It's still a major problem. Brock contact... 13:23, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Image Help[edit]

I need some help aquiring an image for a story I posted. Im new at this whole news thing, and I dont know where to find something thats not copyrighted. Can I please get some help? Look at the article Six people killed in Memphis home <----Is that the right template? Please, I need some help here. Araxes - (talk) 22:10, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

I'd love to provide any assistance i can, however I'm really only on wikinews for the next ten minutes so I probably won't actually be all that useful. With images the rule of thumb is if you made it yourself, if the us federal government made it, or if it is on commons: its ok. What type of image are you looking for.

Quick intro to editing (see help:Contents for more)

  • Link using <nowiki<[[</nowiki> for example to link to main page, do [[Main Page]]
    • Some special pages have a prefix. pages that are portals start with portal. ex [[portal:Europe]] for portal:Europe
    • Some links (image and category) are special. To link to them start with a :. for example to link to category:Europe do [[:category:Europe]]
    • To add a page to a category, do a normal link to the category (add [[category:Europe]] note no colon at front)
    • To add an image, do a normal link to image [[image:smile.png]] makes Smile.png (works for any image on wikinews or commons:
  • Templates (using {{template name}} syntax) includes a page on another page. Try adding {{:Six people killed in Memphis home}} to Wikinews:Sandbox.

Theres lots more. See help:Contents, if you need anymore help feel free to ask here, or on WN:IRC. Bawolff 00:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

How old is "too old"?[edit]

I notice at Wikinews:Requested articles that many requests are marked as "too old". How old is too old?

Specifically, is an event from March 4th too old? The story is the murder of w:Lauren Burk on March 4. I'm surprised that there is not already an article about her murder. It is too late to write an article now?

Could I write that article by copying from Wikipedia then correctly formatting its sources? (Wikipedia is considering deleting that article because it is about a news event, and may not be appropriate for an encyclopedia. If there were an article here, then Wikipedia could redirect to here.) Sbowers3 - (talk) 19:31, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

In general, 3 or 4 days is seen as the limit, I think. What you still could do, is write an article based on any recent developments in that case, e.g. from (a few) sources not older than 3 or 4 days. You could then expand on what preceded.
Wikipedia's GFDL license is not compatible with ours, so that you can't copy things from there. If however, you are the only author of that article or you have the permission of all authors, you could copy it here and use that as a start.
Wikipedia doesn't have articles that consist entirely of redirects to other projects, but if there were to be an article, you could use {{wikinews}} to link to here. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 19:36, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Help publish while still newsworthy[edit]

I think the Cassini article is ready to publish except the title is too long. A good title would be something like, "Cassini spacecraft dives in for close flyby". Hillview Manor Saga[edit]

What is wrong with the article? The msg states it will be abandoned unless edited and sourced.

I have edited. I have sent it off to an attorney twice for review and minor changes were made.

I wrote the article myself. I have listed multiple sources. Why is it considered abandoned?

It's still marked as abandoned because it's still got the {{abandoned}} template in it, likewise it's still marked as having issues (such as needing sources) because the other template that lists issues is still there. I notice that you have edited it, so technically the abandoned template could be removed, but a quick look at the article itself suggests to me that the issues have not been fully dealt with - the sources are there, although you did something weird when entering the information into the template so that will need to be fixed, the title still needs to be changed to a more "newsy" one, it really needs to be fixed stylistically, and I'm not 100% convinced that it's been written from a neutral point of view. Later I may attempt to deal with the first three, but I'm not sure about the last. Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 23:22, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

You get the attention of a bureaucrat, either on their Talk page, on IRC, or on WN:AAA, and request to usurp the account. I highly recommend User:Brianmc for efficiency, customer service, and a mint left on your pillow following usurpation. Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 14:03, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm from Gambia, the smallest country on the African continent. This is apparent from how often it is ignored. Check out its last article, written in 2007. I wanna do something about this because its ridiculous that my country doesnt seem to exist to the rest of the world. I myself would go out and do the research but i don't have the time or resources. What i wanted to know is if i could take the articles from one of the 3 newspapers of this country and post them on this site? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.60.65.173 (talkcontribs) 16:47, 7 April 2008

We would be very happy to hear from your side of the world more often! We don't have any active contributors from Africa, as far as I know. You can't post articles from other newspapers directly. You can however write your own summary based on articles from these 3 newspapers, and write the story in your own words (simply translating would violate copyright, you have to summarise in your own words). Make sure to provide links to your sources online. A short article (for example, 2 to 3 paragraphs) is the best to begin. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:55, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

  • Massport spokeswoman Lisa Langone described the device as a fake bomb strapped to her chest.
  • "This is a serious event and was handled quickly and safely."
  • Simpson was arraigned today on charges including disturbing the peace and possessing a hoax device.

Each of the above three statements leave open questions which have now been definitively answered.

At the 11:00 AM news conference mentioned in the WikiNews article, Major Scott Pare of the Massachusetts State Police reported to the press that the device was found to be harmless. Here is the relevant sentence from the concurrent story in the Boston Globe:

  • Simpson was arrested, and it was quickly determined that the device was harmless.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts continued the charge of felony possession of a "hoax device" in the East Boston Courtroom of Judge Paul Mahoney for nine months, never bringing the case to trial.

On Monday 2 May, 2008, the Commonwealth vacated the felony "hoax device" charge after Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley concluded the State could not go forward with the case.

In view of the principles of Ethics in Journalism and WikiNews' own ethical guidelines, please publish a follow-up story so the the world-wide readers of WikiNews will not be left with an unfavorable impression of Star Simpson (or the impression that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts ever had a case at all).

Moulton[edit]

Moulton appears to be willing to help wiki-news in this matter; but he needs assistance. I am encouraging him to get involved here. (WAS 4.250 at the English language Wikipedia) 4.250.177.164 11:28, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't understand the point of Brian's reference to a British TV series. Moulton (talk) 22:54, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
I speak very little Brian, but I believe he's saying "it's an issue that is past its time and should be allowed to rest rather than being discussed any further". He can correct me if I misinterpreted there. I, however, think that while current policy says "there is no news in this, therefore there is nothing to talk about", I think it's worth pointing out that we do already have process in place to issue a correction to an article in situations where there is another article that can be linked to. Should we have something to allow a small correction box to be added to an article, that basically says "at the time of writing X was believed true, Y has now come to light"? It's a small thing to do, and my interpretation of NPOV says that it may even be necessary in some circumstances (speaking in general terms here, not specifically on this article). Chris pretty much got it. The story is deceased, notnews. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:50, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
What appears to be needed here is some kind of correction/update box that says, "At the time this story was originally filed, WikiNews reported unchallenged assertions by the officials of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from which they have since retreated and vacated. Specifically, the District Attorney has concluded, after nine months of continuances, that the felony charges filed last September against MIT undergraduate Star Simpson cannot go forward because the State has no evidence to prove intent to deceive under the defining language of the Commonwealth's "Hoax Device" statute. Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley conceded that 1) the defendant clearly had no such intent and 2) the security staff at Logan had "quickly determined the [illuminated named tag] device was harmless" at the time of the arrest (as reported by the Boston Globe at 1:15 PM on the day of the arrest, based on an 11AM news conference by Major Scott Pare of the Massachusetts State Police.) Photo Help[edit]

How can I add photos from Wikimedia Commons to my articles?

You can link them the same way as a local image would be linked: [[Image:Foo.jpg]] If the image is not found on the local site, it will check for the same filename on commons. Nakon (talk) 03:56, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
