Images on abandoned articles

Having been poked just now over File:Peanuts Joke Isn't Funny.png (which I've fried), it occurs to me locally uploaded images used on articles that fall abandoned are not obvious to deleting admins and are easy to miss. In many cases, they will become orphaned when the article is deleted and may well need deleted themselves. Anybody have any practical solutions in mind?

It seems to me creating a tool may be more effort than it's worth, and it may be easier to deal with them from time to time as a 'backlog'. But I'll leave that to those with the know-how to know how complex something like a gadget would or would not be. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 10:43, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be surprised if some kind of implementation doesn't already exist on an w: bot somewhere. It's worth looking up. On a related note, is it worth automatically transcluding {{trans-commons}} to free license templates? Wikinews really should have near-zero freely licensed images hosted locally (with very few exceptions, like File:Wiki.png). Microchip08 (talk) 10:59, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps a slightly modified version, noting there may be exceptions. Or, given that it puts things in a maintenance cat, maybe it should go on in such a way it can be forced to vanish for those exceptions. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 11:07, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Agree that if there's a maintenance cat, there needs to be a way to prevent an image from going there.
Broadly speaking, I'm not enthused about aggressive pushing to move stuff to Commons, given their penchant for somewhat whimsical deletion. I've occasionally suspected some of them may get especially whimsical about images used on Wikinews. Just saying. --Pi zero (talk) 11:45, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by whimsical? Microchip08 (talk) 12:01, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Capricious. Deletions for dubious reasons or no good reason, deletions with very suspicious timing. (We once had the image on the number one lead on our main page deleted out from under us, after the image had sat on Commons unchallenged for five or six years until somebody just happened to decide it needed deleting when it was the single most prominent image on Wikinews. Just after the 24-hour horizon, so we couldn't replace the image on the article under policy.) --Pi zero (talk) 12:29, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Media Viewer

Greetings, my apologies for writing in English.

I wanted to let you know that Media Viewer will be released to this wiki in the coming weeks. Media Viewer allows readers of Wikimedia projects to have an enhanced view of files without having to visit the file page, but with more detail than a thumbnail. You can try Media Viewer out now by turning it on in your Beta Features. If you do not enjoy Media Viewer or if it interferes with your work after it is turned on you will be able to disable Media Viewer as well in your preferences. I invite you to share what you think about Media Viewer and how it can be made better in the future.

Thank you for your time. - Keegan (WMF) 21:29, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
