After calling the PM's wife "corrupt," Spain expects an apology[edit]

Wednesday, May 22, 2024|{{subst:Wednesday, May 22, 2024}}}}

Description: Following Argentina's president's claim that the Spanish prime minister's wife is "corrupt," Spain has requested a public apology.

Full story: Following Argentina's president's claim that the Spanish prime minister's wife is "corrupt," Spain has requested a public apology.

Javier Milei mentioned Begoña Gómez, the wife of Pedro Sánchez, the prime minister of Spain, at a far-right political gathering in Madrid without naming her.

Last month, prosecutors demanded the dismissal of a preliminary investigation into Ms. Gómez on charges of corruption, claiming the accusations were unfounded.

However, a minister in Argentina has insisted that Spain apologize for previous comments made regarding Mr. Milei, and the government has not offered an apology.

Speaking in Madrid, Mr. Milei attacked "global elites," the perils of socialism, and "the type of people clinging to power and the level of abuse that generates." The event was hosted by Spain's far-right Vox party.

"Let's say it gets dirty when you have a corrupt wife," Mr. Milei said in reference to Ms. Gómez.

A Spanish court began a preliminary investigation into Ms. Gómez in April due to accusations of influence peddling made by an opposition party.

The right-wing anti-corruption group that originated the claims has now admitted that they might not be true, but she has not been prosecuted with anything related to them.

José Manuel Albares, Spain's foreign minister, called out Argentina's ambassador, claiming that Mr. Milei had denigrated Spain and its leader.

He threatened to sever diplomatic ties between Spain and Argentina if no apology was given.

But according to Argentina's Interior Minister Guillermo Francos, "there is no apology" and the Spanish government should take responsibility for the remarks made about Mr. Milei in the past.

Following the election of the far-right government of Argentina, ties between the two nations have cooled, leading to this most recent diplomatic spat.

A Spanish official made allegations earlier this month that the president of Argentina was a drug user. In retaliation, Mr. Milei denounced the "slander and insults" and criticized Pedro Sánchez, the socialist prime minister of Spain, for his policies.

Mr. Milei has a history of altercations with foreign leaders.

He has labeled Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the president of Mexico, as "ignorant" and Inacio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, as a "angry communist".
