Earlier Mozilla stopped maintaining Firefox OS, a web-based mobile operating system, also known as Boot2Gecko. It is unfortunate that Ubuntu Touch didn't successfully enter the market either (or entered it and didn't find itself competitive).

Perhaps one could have more success by focusing on a particular function (maps, books, multimedia) as this could allow for more copyleft content to be present on the device, available for the users to edit and share.
