I can see through this...

  • They stay they're keeping the stores open during the holiday season: the hottest time for toy sales.
  • They're only filing for bankruptcy in the US and Canada: the two countries where Black Friday sales are most popular.

What I think is that some smartass TRU exec found out about the sheer power of the words "going out of business", and had an idea to combine them with the equally-powerful words "Black Friday".

Although I can imagine some such consideration factoring into the specific timing, filing for bankruptcy seems too extreme a measure to be motivated entirely by such a transitory ploy.
