On Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sikkim to commemorate its 50th anniversary of becoming an Indian state. Modi's visit was originally meant to take place in state capital Gangtok, but inclement weather forced him to instead conduct a video conference from Bagdogra.

During the speech, he mentioned some of the famous past athletes of the state, and pushed for the development of Sikkim's adventure sports.

A continued growth of Sikkim's connectivity and tourism will be pursued to move Sikkim away from its current image, which Modi described as being a "hill station", to becoming a "global tourism destination". According to NDTV, Modi also mentioned a unique chilli of Sikkim, which is one of the state's newest exports, in connection with his goal of expanding the state's exports.

India Today NE reported that the "Act East" policy, which has sought to utilise Northeast India to connect to East and Southeast Asia for years, will be expanded to include an "Act Fast" component in relation to local development, according to Modi.

Before statehood, Sikkim was an independent protectorate of India. There was then a 1975 referendum which led to the end of its monarchy and integration into India.
