On Friday morning, at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni announced an upcoming film in the Star Wars franchise titled Star Wars: Starfighter with Canadian actor Ryan Gosling being cast in a lead role. The film was set to be released in May of 2027.

The film will be a standalone feature, and Gosling will be playing an original character. The film is said to be set five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, though the plot does not involve the Skywalker family. No other details of the plot were revealed.

Gosling is a longtime Star Wars fan, commenting that the films "probably framed [his] idea of what a movie even was."
