On Sunday, May 18, 2025, a suicide bomber attacked a group of young recruits who were waiting in line to register at Damanyo Camp in Mogadishu, Somalia. The blast killed at least 10 people and injured between 21 and 30 others, according to various eyewitnesses and medical reports. According to Associated Press, the death toll reached as high as 13. The Islamist extremist organization al Shabaab took responsibility for the attack, stating that its fighters killed up to 30 soldiers and injured 50 others.
A military officer identified as Suleiman, who witnessed the attack from across the street, described the sequence of events: "A speeding tuk-tuk stopped, a man alighted, ran into the queue, and then blew himself up. I saw 10 people dead, including recruits and passers-by. The death toll may rise." The bomber had apparently targeted the long line of young recruits waiting at the gates of the military facility.
The attack occurred at approximately 9:20 AM local time (6:20 AM GMT), according to the Ministry of Information (Somalia), which confirmed that a suspected al-Shabab suicide bomber had detonated explosives outside the Xero Damaayo camp (another name for the same facility).
Several countries issued statements condemning the attack on the Damanyo military base, reflecting international concern about the security situation in Somalia.
