William Duplessie, 32, was arrested after giving up to police in New York. Him and his business partner, were taken into custody on Friday, were accused of torturing an Italian tourist in Manhattan for their crypto information.
The alleged victim said that they were "hung off a ledge," "shocked with electrical wires," and "attacked with a chainsaw" in an attempt to get them to reveal crypocurrency information.
The alleged victim's name was not released. Two cryptocurrency investors, John Woeltz (37) and William Duplessie (32/33), have been arrested and charged in Manhattan after allegedly kidnapping and torturing a 28-year-old Italian businessman in a luxury SoHo townhouse for about 17 days. The motive was to force the victim—who knew the suspects through a business relationship—to reveal the password to his Bitcoin account.
According to police, the victim was lured to New York by threats against his family, then stripped of his passport and electronics, bound, beaten, shocked with electrical wires, forced to take narcotics, urinated on, pistol-whipped, attacked with a saw, and at one point dangled from a staircase. Blood was found throughout the apartment. The ordeal ended when the victim escaped and alerted authorities.
Both Woeltz and Duplessie have pleaded not guilty and are being held without bail, facing charges including kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and criminal possession of a weapon. The case has also triggered an NYPD internal investigation after it was revealed that two detectives, who had provided private security for one of the suspects, may have had prior connections to the townhouse where the crime occurred. These detectives have been placed on modified duty, though officials say they were unaware of any illegal activity.
