succession[edit]

This process is cumbersome. He has already been a lame duck for months. Mr Blair should ask Labour MPs to have a vote straight away on whom they want to lead them. He should then go to the palace and advise the queen to ask the winner of that vote to form a government. Better still, he should choose a colleague who he thinks can form a government, ask him if he's prepared to do so, and then advise the queen accordingly. Parliament can then decide if it will support such a government. The prime ministership is mainly a matter for the crown and parliament and shouldn't be principally a party-matter. There is, of course, a case for a general election, and that option is always open to both Mr Blair and his successor.
