Notes for author(s):
The two sources listed are really one source disguised as two sources. ABC republished an Associated Press article and clearly marked it as such. Sky News republished an Associated Press article and didn't clearly mark it as such. They're functionally the same article. Another source must be found. This is exactly the kind of local interest article I like to see on Wikinews: Important and colorful but not something that international readers would necessarily find in their own feeds. It even has a UNESCO tie-in.
Notes for reviewer:
A cursory search for sources not heavily based on the AP article produced no results at this time. Years ago, we at Wikinews explored the idea of whether a source choosing to republish a press release counted as independent, whether we should treat republication like an endorsement from that news agency. At that time, the answer was no.
This is a pre-review only and is not part of the official review process. A pre-review is meant to help the author or authors improve the article and increase the likelihood of it passing a formal review. This pre-review was not done by a reviewer and represents a recommendation that can be heeded or ignored.
Another source?
[edit]Might still be AP though, https://www.euronews.com/2025/06/15/hot-air-balloon-accidents-in-turkish-resort-1-dead-31-injured

- In Aksaray, two hot air balloons which took off from Ihlara Valley for touristic flights on Sunday crashed near Gözlukuyu village.
- Title of article might need changing to 2 balloons? Thanks. @Darkfrog24 BigKrow (talk) 18:01, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- When in doubt, go to the news agency's "About Us" page: [3] (I found a source that looked good, Metro in the UK, but it listed itself as an Associated Press news organization.)
- The About Euronews page doesnt say it copies AP all the time, but the article does look to me like they copied AP. It doesn't contain any information not in the AP article. I can't prove they copied it, though. If I were the reviewer, I would tell you to wait a few hours and see if any other news organizations do their own investigations or assessments of the video evidence. But I also wouldn't fight anyone on this. Darkfrog24 (talk) 18:06, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
Review of revision 4864462 [Passed]

Revision 4864462 of this article has been reviewed by Michael.C.Wright (talk · contribs) and has passed its review at 20:17, 17 June 2025 (UTC).
Comments by reviewer: As part of the review process, the article was edited to improve clarity, fix grammar, and ensure proper attribution. Edits included specifying which officials made statements, attributing secondhand descriptions (such as the video footage), and confirming that "hard landing" is appropriate aviation terminology. The paragraphs were also reordered to follow the inverted pyramid structure, and some repetitive or awkward phrasing like overuse of "also" and "according to" was removed (some was added by the reviewer and later changed). See the edit history for full details. While the article is factually accurate and adheres to Wikinews style, both cited sources are structurally similar and contain very similar coverage of the event. Therefore, our synthesis article, based only on those two sources, adds little value for the reader beyond what is already available elsewhere. Although Wikinews does not prohibit this, we generally aim to provide more than a restatement of existing news. A more valuable contribution might include deeper background information on past ballooning accidents in the region, context about safety regulations in Turkish tourism, or better use of general knowledge—such as how wind conditions typically affect balloon navigation, or how popular ballooning is seasonally in Cappadocia. The reviewed revision should automatically have been edited by removing {{Review}} and adding {{Publish}} at the bottom, and the edit sighted; if this did not happen, it may be done manually by a reviewer. |
