Article needs an image[edit]

There's a link to the Esa sight with the images. I don't know how to handle those and it would be nice to have that surface shot next to the article.

Unfortunately the image is not compatible with the public domain license, and so we can't upload it to Wikimedia Commons. We really need to transition to our own repository that includes fair-use images. -- IlyaHaykinson 23:53, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Unlike the American space program, the European Space agencies keep copyrights on their images. Although for news, this is obviously a fair use issue, the Wikimedia Commons will not allow us to use "fair use" images. Hence, my desire to get us off mandatory Wikimedia Commons use and its restrictions. -- Davodd | Talk 00:55, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Your turn to bring it up. I've brought it up three times with the #wikimedia people. They'll start calling me a nag if I bring it up again. - Amgine 01:54, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)

simple illustration for story
I banged out an illustration of the Huygens probe using Blender and the GIMP. Not as cool as the renderings on the ESA site, but it fills the void. What do people think about this? If you think this approach is worthwhile, it might be interesting to approach artists to occassionally rattle off a simple graphic for a story. MikeEdwards 01:08, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)
VERY GOOD! -- Davodd | Talk 01:40, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I just sent the ESA people the following email:
Do the images from the Huygens probe fall under the same copyright restrictions as the rest of the ESA site, or are they public domain like many of NASA's images? I was wondering since the photo credit is jointly ESA and NASA.
Don't know if that will make a difference, but I'd be curious to hear what they have to say. It seems a shame about the copyright restriction though, especially since it was created using public funding. Oh, well, we'll see what happens. MikeEdwards 01:43, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)
The Wikipedia is using one of the images on this page: Huygens probe.

The Huygens photos do have NASA as part of their photo credit. I just saw the photos appear on the NASA site. No copyright is given. Under their terms, unless there is a copyright shown, we can use it. Woohoo! Let's go get 'em! MikeEdwards 02:07, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)
