Story in development[edit]

This would have been a good candidate for using the "Story in Development" template.Crtew (talk) 18:22, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Thoughts[edit]

  • The headline should be a sentence in active voice (in headlinese telling the most important and unique thing about the story. See WN:Headline.
  • The lede —the first paragraph— should be devoted to succinctly answering as many as reasonably possible of the basic questions about the focus of the article. See WN:lede and WN:basic questions.
  • We do recommend having more than one source lined up before one starts writing. As avoiding copyvio is one of the various purposes of having multiple sources.

Original reporting notes[edit]

Have you ever been to the Kentucky Derby?-I went to the Derby several times in the 80's and 90's. There were always crowds of 100,000 plus each time. We had good seats in the first turn. Before the big race the owners and trainers would walk the horses over from the barns right in front of us. It was incredible to see the millions of dollars of highly bred horses all at once. My favorite race was when Grindstone won in a photo finish. What are your picks for the Derby?- Bodemeister, the Bob Baffert horse that won the Arkansas Derby by several lengths. Union Rags who didn't win, but was coming on strong in his last prep race, and any horse that Calvin Borel is riding. How many years have you been playing the horses?-Since I was 18 or probably before. 40 plus years, but much of that was only during the summer at Ellis Park (Henderson, Kent.,USA) before the advent of simulcasting. My parents took me to Ellis Park when I was a kid. What was your experience at Churchill Downs?- Going to Churchill Downs was always like stepping back in time. The track has a lot of history and it's so old, but it's hard to see all of that when 100,000 people are packed in. It's better to go during the week when you can see more of the place and take it all in.

One little thing.......[edit]

....I just caught: I'm not so sure this qualifies as "breaking". Think about it: the horse won, the event is over. Another horse isn't going to win. There's really nothing (directly connected, at least) that's evolving or devolving around this event, know what I mean? If a tragic calamity happened right before the event, and the article was about the calamity (and what would potentially unfold following that calamity), then maybe so. For now, I'm going to leave it.....but just for future reference. Bddpaux (talk) 18:41, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
